NYC's September 11 Commemoration Plans

From reader Greg S.
From the past few nights, the Tribute in Light has been lighting up the lower Manhattan sky for testing. According to the city, the testing will continue through tonight, "On Sept. 11, the lights will be turned on at 6:00 pm and remain on until 8:00 am on the morning of Sept. 12. The lights will point straight up and will remain static." The installation is set up on top of a parking garage on West and Edgar Streets, but can be seen from downtown Manhattan, Brooklyn and NJ.

As for the city's other events commemorating the eighth anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the official ceremony is at Zuccotti Park, where the names of the 2,752 victims will be read by victims' relatives and volunteers. Moments of silence will be held at 8:46 a.m. (observance of time first plane struck North Tower), 9:03 a.m. (when the second plane struck South Tower), 9:59 a.m. (when the South Tower fell) and 10:29 a.m. (when the North Tower fell). Relatives and survivors will also be allowed to descend into the "pit" at Ground Zero to pay their respects and lay flowers.

Tomorrow is also a National Day Service—there are many volunteer opportunities around the city. And the National September 11 Memorial and Museum's preview site is open to visitors.

The Tribute in Light is the best 9/11 memorial concept ever and should be permanent. Get rid of all the other crap going on down there and move on with your lives.

agreed. all that other stuff is tacky tourist attractions...at this point.

I know you don't like Queens, But you can see it from parts of there too.

ha, good point! queens is like the red-headed, neglected step-child locked in gothamist's basement.

not enough hipsters or non-native NYers in Queens for Gothamist.

I'm not sure, but you might even be able to see it from as far away as Staten Island!

I live on Staten Island and I've seen it clearly from my house.

I love Queens—thanks for letting me know that it is visible from Queens. You never know with visibility, pollution, etc.

I can see Russia from my house

I can see the tribute in lights from all the way up in Inwood.

It seems like every year they close off more and more of downtown on September 11, making it more difficult for people to observe the moment of silence at Ground Zero.

The reason they do that is because they don't want a large crowd realizing what a bunch of thieving assholes they are and why it's taking longer to rebuild than it was to build the original Trade Center.

For another 80M I can tell you why there have been delays. But that will just delay it even longer.

75M is my best offer. New Yorkers have had enough with the inflated costs organizations like yours have charged.

Our negotiation alone has caused major delays in the rebuilding process.

Please refer to permanent sign that reads: "I'll get to it as soon as possible, tomorrow".

it's right in between the signs that read:

"Attention 9/11 Construction workers- All overtime and holiday pay must be verified by the Black Squirrel in City Hall Park"

and

"Attention illegal 9/11 Construction workers- Please make sure you sign your new benefits, retirement, and pension packages before the deadline- also refer to the overtime notice posted to your left (no, your other left)"

It's the same media that NEVER mentioned Muslims' hatred of Israel as a possible motive for 9/11.
