New York City welcomed royalty yesterday, as Crown Prince Willem-Alexander of Orange and Crown Princess Maxima were greeted by a 21-gun salute and welcomed by Mayor Bloomberg and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a ceremony at the USS Intrepid. It's all part of the 400th anniversary celebration of Henry Hudson's arrival in the New York Harbor; the Crown Prince said, "It's an honor to be welcomed here by the Secretary of State and the mayor of this great city. Arriving in New York is always a great pleasure, and the pleasure increases with every visit."

He also said, "It is wonderful to still be able to see the Dutch influences across the City, from transportation and art to music and food. This great city was built on the values of the early Dutch-American pioneers in New Amsterdam that we still share with you today: a passion for liberty, an entrepreneurial spirit, freedom of conscience, and the unwavering belief that everyone has the right to the pursuit of happiness. We are looking forward to experiencing a bit of home in all of this week's festivities." Willem-Alexander and Maxima met in Manhattan, where she was working as a banker; CityRoom reports, "The royal couple declined through a spokesman to share any of their favorite city spots, citing concern that they would be swarmed by the Dutch news media."

After their Manhattan welcome yesterday, the royals visited West Point, discussing Afghanistan with cadets, and Albany, receiving a key to the city and meeting with Governor Paterson. Today they will open the New Amsterdam Pavilion, which has been under construction in The Battery. More details on the many quadri-centennial events can be found at NY400.

They are, but Mike and Hilary are both pretty short.

It's like the movie Twins, except funnier.

'Crown Princess Maxima'

What an awesome name.

And you should see her sisters; Princess Altima and Princess Corolla

But her brother - Prince 280Z - is a bit of an oddball!

I'm part Dutch and am 5'8'' which is above average for a woman. Also, I'm pretty hot. Go Dutch people! Yeeeeah!

this is funny because every single dutch individual I know is pretty short. (but when I was over there I did feel like I was in the land of giants)

The princess is pretty hot. Can we see a pic of you?

Dutch people are the tallest of any nation in the world. Men average 6'1" and women are very tall too, though I don't remember the average.

Of course, towering over Bloomberg is a not a particularly difficult achievement.

My husband's family is purely Dutch, I on the other hand, Irish Italian. So yeah, I'm 5'2 and can totally empathize with Mike and Hil's photo situation there. In all of my wedding pictures I'm at least a foot shorter than everyone else.

They're taller 'cause they're made with cheese.

there must be HGH in the pot brownies from their coffee shops.

did they crush any witches when they fell out of the sky?

"We thank you very sweetly for doing it so neatly"

Sabrina looks pretty good after dumping Darren for this prince guy...but what would Endorra say?

Or was she Samantha? I get my TV witches mixed up...

Is the princess aware that she is dressed like a little Dutch tulip? So cute!

I thought the royals were standing on a podium before scrolling down. They look marvelous!

I had no idea they had royalty there. What a joke.

maxima has got some nice stems on her, but what the hell is she wearing? it looks like a poodle made whoopies with a tomato.

Mrs. Alexander of Orange is wearing orange.

How many wish we'd been a dutch instead a british colony?
Legal marijuana... tall, blonde women... more bike lanes... gouda... clogs...

How many wish we'd been a dutch instead a british colony?

AAARGH!!!!

How many wish we'd been a dutch instead OF a british colony?

Uh... New Amsterdam? Ever hear of it in history class?

Yes, New York's colonial settlement! We are in Dutch country!

Actually...we technically be in Indigenous People's country whom the colonials wiped out and murdered in cold blood.

actually...this land is your land, this land is my land.

the Dutch flag in the background on the fence is hung upside-down. Nice work.

Holy shit, you're right! Good catch. Learned something new too. Yeah, that's really poor work. Didn't the flag-hanger think to ask someone since all the stripes are of equal dimension?

vive la france!

actually, in my ignorance, I thought it was french navy ships steaming into the harbor with all hands on deck when I saw them while waiting for the bus in bayridge yesterday morning.

d'oh

Is Bloomberg sucking on a lemon? He looks like such a sourpuss.

That's his usual expression. You should see him when he's peeved.

Bloomberg wishes he was standing on his wallet.

On closer inspection, it looks like Bloomberg is about to let a fart rip.

The dutch are awesome, and their women are incredibly beautiful!

The Prince could remind our President and mini-mayor about freedom of conscience and entrepreneurial spirit.

And legalized drugs

And legalized prostitution

And free public urinals in the street

Princess Maxima has huge heels on, or else she'd only be about 5'11".

Dear Crown Princess Maxima,

I'll be your Robespierre if you'll be my Marie Antoinette.
