After the Post reported that at least six buildings inspectors were to be arrested, along with members of the Luchese crime family, for things like allegedly taking bribes and dealing drugs at sites, Mayor Bloomberg spoke out about the looming scandal. According to the Post, he said, "They have resigned... You can rest assured we're not going to tolerate any of this... This is an industry that obviously for a long period of time has had problems with lawbreakers. We keep working at it and working at it, and hopefully, someday, we'll get rid of everybody in the construction industry that breaks the law." Now the Buildings Department has to re-inspect those former inspectors' hundreds of sites!

job security for the next bunch! silver lining?
Dream on Mr. Bloomberg
As long as city government continues to NOT use outside auditors to check the work and the books every now and then, this sort of corruption will continue. Nobody would plan on a corrupt career when the solid chance of an expert review every few years is always possible. With so many cities laying off staff, the talent pool is available for NYC on the cheap.
What?!
that's all the mayor has to say, they have Quit??
what about his favorite agency the Dept of Investigations?
shouldn't they have done a more complete background check on the inspectors? I mean, c'mon, made members of the mob?
what about the deutsche bank fire, any jail time for those?
two firemen died there mr. mayor.
He didn't say they have to quit, he said they have already quit. They're being arrested, what more do you want?
I want a more thorough investigation is what I want.
I want the Deutsche bank fire get an independent investigation. no more deals for developers. and they're not arrested yet. there's very very little info on this follow up.
So, why weren't they fired?
Overblown story. Obviously they're crooks and they should be fired, but given the number of buildings in the city and the relatively tiny number of collapses and fires due to shoddy construction, even the corrupt inspectors seem to be doing a decent job.
so the buck doesn't stop at Bloomberg.
All alleged perps would like a warning about imminent arrest. Maybe a little extra time to skip town?
Bloomberg certainly understands corruption; his administration is rife with it.
