Yesterday a Virginia couple, Kelly Respess and Paul Kercheval, tied the knot in Grand Army Plaza—but instead of hopping into a horse-drawn carriage afterwards, they decided to draw attention to the cruelty of the carriage industry. The message on the back of their 1936 Ford Phaeton (a vehicle similar to the "horseless carriages" being proposed as replacements) read, "Just Hitched—But Not to a Carriage."
The bride said, "Knowing that someday soon horse-drawn carriages in New York will be a thing of the past would be the most wonderful wedding present I can imagine. We're asking other couples who are getting married to steer clear of horse-drawn carriages and avoid turning their joyous wedding day into a day of misery for an abused horse."
Peta notes that the newlyweds also handed out informational leaflets to guests and passerby; the site also has more photos, including the My Little Pony-esque wedding cake toppers!

Polluting the air (that looks like Prospect Park, where I go running when I come to brooklyn) while making statements about horse drawn carriages seems pretty ironic.
In general I might be in agreement with you -- except that I stepped in a pile of horse crap while running in Central Park this morning.
That's good luck, you know.
What's the big fucking deal? Pulling a carriage is not particularly hard for them. At least they're getting some exercise.
The romantic notions of animal rights fanatics often descend into naivete. These horses will be on supermarket shelves in France as soon as they succeed in replacing them with motor vehicles.
Wrong, they are abused and send to slaughter anyhow. It is more than pulling a carriage. They are double shifted. they stand in dirty water, are underfed and underwater, stand behind idling buses and are injured commuting 10th ave in all the traffic from Lincoln tunnel. it is damn cruel and Wrong
as a society we care more about animals than people, truly sad.
depends on which society you're talking about.
and it is truly sad. I'd rather have the carriage horse be food than to continue working. any meat cooked long enough will become tender.
Amen.
They look just fine to me.
I think you're just looking for excuses to get pissed off.
Fucking obnoxious wedding-day pontification. If you two are so uppity, why not a pedicab? Oh, becuase the pedi cab driver might be fueled by something evil, like hamburger, that's why fossil fules are a-okay.
Yes, a pedicab driver will bring to mind old Shanghai as we knew it.
They did play Coolie And The Gang at their reception...
that's nice, good for them.
best of luck to the newlyweds.
just saw one sad carriage horse going east to CP,
looked like the horse didn't give a crap, line of cars behind him honking.
What's the gas mileage like for a 1936 Ford Phaeton?
Careful there, when felix finds out that the standard model was 178 horsepower, he'll go off the deep end.
I thought the show/tour cars would be electric? or so I've read somewhere.
Over time, NYCLASS supports replacing horse carriages with “Green” replica classic cars. These cars can provide rides for tourists, offer jobs to workers currently in the horse carriage industry with the potential for higher wages, and maintain the historic and romantic feel of the tours.

Great way to start their marriage with compassion. Those poor horses suffer so much. it is a shame how NYC permits such blatant cruelty in the streets. shame
Shame, yes but their *big statement* is lame.
I don't understand how they could be so ignorant to the plight of the poor prehistoric animals they're burning in that car. Fossil fuels are animals too, you insensitive clods!
I agree with them about the horses.
But what about the HUMANS who have to breathe their exhaust? What about the hundreds murdered and maimed by cars in the city every year?
Maybe instead of cans behind the car, they should have dragged a few pedestrians.

Over time, I have a plan for world peace and a cure for AIDS. Lets see who succeeds first.

It is the saddest sight to see those poor horses in traffic pulling carriages around all day, every day. That is sad sad life.
Please put things in perspective. These are WORKING animals and would be doing nothing if they didn't have a job. You are looking at it from your point of view and not the animals. These horses are happier doing romantic walks in the nature. They need to have a purpose to feel complete.
An other species doesn't need a job to have a purpose. that is your notion. And you don't even work which is ironic. These horses are Deprived for their natural existence and are forced to work in an inhuman environment and kept in inhumane warehouses in NYC.
I work all the time you moron. I going to make 175k this year so STFU.
Workers comp doesn't pay 175k/year.
Workers comp doesn't pay 175k/year.
Total income you idiot.
But can you leave the office whenever you want to.
So that's what felixthecat looks like.
Huh.
I am so sick and tired of these pedantic neo-hippies. Horses, oxen, mules, dogs, elephants, camels are all used for human travel—this isn't a recent use either, it's been around for millenia.
They're not beaten in fact, the majority are like pets and cared for lovingly. When will these self-absorbed neo-hippies go back to living in their caves, away from society where their carbon footprint is in all likelyhood larger than most.
Side note-
Organic this organic that... Wake up people and do some research—organic food isn't all that good for you. In fact, conventional farming with organic mixed in is much better. It's all about nutritional value and how long it can last without rotting. If an organic apple rots faster than a conventional apple, in all likelyhood, the organic apple has less nutritional value rendering it basically worthless.
Back to the animals-
I want to see these people protest cowboys and, wait for it............ the iditarod! Oh and what about human mules; Sherpas?
You are off the beat and they do protest other cruelty but this was about the cruelty of NYC horse drawn carriages. I would never expect YOU to have any compassion for hoses since YOU have no compassion even for the bombed children.
felixthedouche.... always commenting off topic... LOSER.
I wonder how the vegan wedding cake tasted
My best friend and her husband are vegan. When they got married it was sorbet. Love them both dearly, but that was about as festive as cardboard.

PETA kills more animals than anybody.
THIS IS A TRUE STATEMENT
From July 1998 through December 2008, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) killed over 21,000 dogs, cats, and other "companion animals." That's more than five defenseless creatures every day. PETA has a walk-in freezer to store the dead bodies, and contracts with a Virginia Beach company to cremate them.
http://www.petakillsanimals.com
unfortunately, millions of cats and dogs are euthanized throughout the country every year as too many animals come into shelters every year.
NYC Animal Care and Control (the city's main animal shelter) euthanized over 17,000 cats and dogs in 2007 alone. Those numbers you give for PETA (for a ten year period) don't seem entirely egregious - plus I wasn't aware PETA claimed to be a shelter or pet adoption service?
I think the couple is taking a good small stand on a matter dear to them. though I don't think it's necessary for it to be like a publicity stunt. though I suppose that's the point, to draw attention to this subject.
sidenote: I think the reason we get so upset over animals being abused or used, perhaps more that humans, is because we see them as innocents.
I disagree. I feel our society does it because animals are an easier target (hunting pun not intended). Treating humans well has far too much red tape and bureaucracy.
Holy shit, you mean Felix is a woman? My worldview is shattered!
OK...I'm setting the over/under on the number of cats she owns at 12.5.
And I think we have the number of significant others pegged squarely at zero.
How right you are, how RIGHT you are.
LOL, WTH? I'm no dame.
So instead of being used to pull carriages, they can be made into glue. I refuse to use glue that isn't made from a horse.
Good call. Comparing the other comments from other sources this is really her. Anonymity Fail.
What nerds!
Seeing these jerkoffs go back to Virginia will be the best wedding present I could imagine.
Good call. Comparing the other comments from other sources this is really her. Anonymity Fail.
i hope that someday soon marriages in New York, and marriages period, will be a thing of the past. traditional marriage is a biologically inaccurate way to organize civil society.
"biologically inaccurate way to organize civil society" hahahahahahha
Um, Felix? Felix? Felix? (In my best Ben Stein voice, which is not very good).
This gets funnier by the minute. FTC2 outed, disappears. "theTruth" appears, tries to out Peeba.
"theTruth" magically appears minutes after FTC2's 6:10AM post. "the Truth" also has poor grammar & links immediately to the same old videos. In the end, who is the real Keyser Soze?
Hey asshole, I have no relationship with FTC2.
Yep, that's him/her/it. Soon the puntuation will deteriorate, allegations of ugly mothers & bestiality ensue, Bloomberg diatribes commence.
Who are you? What do you want from me? You have no idea who I am. If you have nothing to do, then go out and find something to do.
When the shit really hits the fan in the world, veal like these will be hopeless. Survival is for the fittest.

Carriage driver verbally abused elderly woman and made vile racists remarks.
