The hubbub over White House environmental official Van Jones continues to simmer, with Glenn Beck and other conservatives demanding that Jones, a green jobs innovator, step down. Jones' past, notably signing a petition claiming that 9/11 was an inside job (though two people who signed the petition, including Howard Zinn, say they were misled into signing it) and calling Republican assholes in a video, has required him to deny support for "9/11 truther" views and apologize for other past statements. When asked about the 9/11 truther petition, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said, "It's not something that the president agrees with." Well, that's a relief! Still, Rep. Mike Pence (R-Indiana) wants Jones to resign, "Given recent revelations concerning the associations and statements of the president's green jobs czar, Van Jones should resign his position and if he is unwilling to do so, the president should demand his resignation. His extremist views and coarse rhetoric have no place in this Administration or the public debate," and complains that people in "czar" positions aren't vetted by Congress.

Its his opinion. A stupid opinion, but an opinion none the less.
ITA. As long as it has no effect on his "green jobs innovator" position, it's irrelevant.
I'm not sure about that. To me, it calls into question his judgment and competence. Decisions aren't made in a vacuum. How a man thinks about some topics is a reflection of his other thought processes.
Spirit of 76,
I was about to agree with you, and what you say sounds perfectly reasonable, then realized, upon further thought, that I happen to have a co-worker (an attorney) who is very competent at his work, and exercises good professional judgment, in addition to having what I consider to be good, decent personal values, and who, all at the same time, advocates the 2nd-shooter-JFK theory as well as believes those who question the moon landing. So, if you believe what I tell you, then this one anecdotal case proves that a belief in far-flung theories does not necessarily detract from one's professional judgment and competence.
I once worked with a Seventh Day Adventist that was strangely obsessed with the Zodiak Killer and wore a bad wig. Very competent at his job though...
Even if you don't think Obama is the communist-loving Muslim terrorist many people would like you to believe he is, you have to admit that his ability to play right into the hands of every single stereotype attached to him is quite amazing. How many times can you write off these hiring gaffes as "oops!"? At best it is incompetence, at worst it is arrogance.
People will see what they want to see.
The last guy in the White House spent money like water, got more power over our freedoms and lied like crazy, but his supporters didn't see any conflicts with Republican values, until the very end.
Replace "truther" with "birther," and the whole Republican Party would have to resign... At least with the Democrats, you only have one or two jokers who may (or may not) be clownshit crazy. With the Republicans, the crazy goes right to the top -- even their highest and best can't quite bring themselves to acknowledge the legitimate parentage of the sitting president.
I'm kinda tired of hearing Republicans complain about the splinter in the other side's eye, while ignoring the giant frickin' plank sticking out of their own, frankly.
Great - I'm glad some of us are satisfied with the 911 Commission's comprehensive and completely unbiased report. After all, it's not like Bush & Cheney resisted the investigation, right?
Fuckin truthers! What a bunch of wackos! False flag attacks never happen! It's not like the administration used the attack to justify any of its subsequent policies, right?
Take these dumbass America haters, for instance. Too many wackos to name:

Obama, our first real minority president should be more careful with his appointments. The 9/11 deniers are a step away from the Holocaust deniers, this guy should have been vetted more thoroughly, if he did say it, he's a liability. If he didn't say it, Jones should be screaming his head off.
do we get to kick out ron paul too then? please?
Who's Ron Paul?
dude's an admitted communist, aside from having shitty opinions; of course he should be canned. he was never vetted, and he never would have passed. he makes the rest of the clowns and criminals obama tried to hire look like choirboys. this is the problem with hiring czars; the constitution makes no allowance for their power or accountability. this problem is politically agnostic by the way, so don't go assuming anything about me from the post.
can i just assume it's politically ignorant then? because not all czars are (a) unvetted, or (b) appointed by the prez.
None of the 'czars' are vetted through the congressional approval process, and if you think for one second that President Obama didn't sign off on this one, or every one for that matter, your naivete is astounding.
Whether you care or don't as to this guy keeping or losing his job, there's a more interesting side to this story. As of today, none of the network news (excepting Fox, of course) was following this story (the ABC blog does not come on air). The NY Times is also not following the story either. So, if Jones resigns, the Times will, once again, have to explain why someone from Obama's cabinet was sent packing after a week or month long scandal that they never thought was important enough to put into print.
BTW, this guy is not just a wacky truther. He's also a serial insulter; country (“an apartheid regime”), capitalism, the coal industry, American farming, the white population, the Bush administration (for causing 9/11), etc. Now he's quickly trying to disavow all of that, as if the internet, Youtube include, didn't exist.
It's not just his personal opinions. It's being able to work effectively with other people in and out of the left wing of the democratic party. I think that right now, he's not capable of doing his job and should be canned.

Not only is this a double header but a long one as well.
AS always, Gothamist gives you a two for one comment.
One last thing.
Someone made a good point about truthers.
How can anyone anywhere believe that their government destroyed 16 acres of their city and killed some 3,000 people at once and yet continue to live and work as if nothing that bad really happened? Why aren't they running screaming to another country? Why do they just bitch a little in between drinking their lattes?
Well, they probably don't believe their own B.S.
I'd still like to know what Bush and the Saudi ambassador discussed on the Truman Balcony the week after 9/11.
Inside job? I doubt it. Accessory after the fact? Quite plausible.
And before the fact. Rimming the Saudi royals for oil these decades and sprinkling the mideast with military bases aint chopped liver.
Glenn Beck thinks this guy should resign? Heck, that's seems like a really strong job reference to me -- give Jones a raise at the very least.
Glenn Beck? This Glenn Beck (video at youtube from his show)
Who mispells the word by leaving out "C." As in "Communist." He's that nutty.
The man is a self proclaimed communist too. Then again, so is Obama in my opinion.
Curious, are you drinking the red kool-aid or the blue kool-aid.
Whats the big deal? Last president we had believed in some book of fairy tails where in one part there was a Magicion who rose from the dead after 3 days.
Hell, President George W. Bush told French President Jacques Chirac in early 2003 that Iraq must be invaded to thwart Gog and Magog, the Bible’s satanic agents of the Apocalypse.

Fortunately for mankind, the universe, and Ides Of March, this sad bit of political excreta has stepped down, never to be seen or heard from again. ( until a cop notices the parked car with fogged up windows and opens it )
