If you're a local news junkie, you've probably seen TV spots from Public Advocate candidate Bill de Blasio around his Park Slope home that prominently featuring his family, who in case you missed it, include his African-American wife and their two children. Well, now his fellow City Councilman Charles Barron accuses him of pandering to the black community with campaign ads.
De Blasio has been endorsed in the public advocate's race by many prominent locals, including the Reverend Al Sharpton and Congressman Charles Rangel. But Barron says to the News, "For de Blasio to do that is disgraceful. It's an insult to the black community, because you need to be talking about our black issues. Don't just promote your wife...Everybody in the city is talking about it...You want to attract the black vote? Then talk about foreclosures."
Apparently a flyer that shows his wife Chirlane (the couple met when they worked in the Dinkins administration) saying, "He gets it," is getting lots of complaints since "the implication is he's married to a black woman so he 'gets us,'" according to a Post source. The Post also says that de Blasio's mailings which go to "predominantly white areas had no pictures or just showed photos of the candidate." However, de Blasio said this morning, "We have sent the mailings with my family to every part of the city, every community and I’m very proud of my family."
After the jump is the TV ad featuring de Blasio's and his family. He also said today, "There are some people who feel very good about people of different backgrounds getting together, and there are some that don’t. We’ve always known that some people would react negatively. And it’s unfortunate, but it’s not a surprise."

Well, my dad's white and my mother's hispanic, and our family photo looks a lot like his. So, yeah, I think he gets me and I get him. Politicians have always used their families as props in their campaigns (white guy with beautiful white wife, beautiful white kids), so why should he abstain just because someone might think he's playing the so-called "inter-race card"?
That's who he is. He didn't get married to a black woman just to be able to put it in his resumé, after all. And neither did my dad!

You're totally right. In fact, all the other candidates are racist, with their white wives and white kids. They didn't marry a black woman and they didn't even try to adopt a black kid. Total disrespect not only blacks, but to the whole city.

Foreclosures are higher in black areas - the NY Times, I think, had a map on it. And I've heard that these fraudlent loans were a backstabbing response to Clinton's initiative as President to make these kinds of things more available to minorities. Regardless it's still a fact that foreclosures are higher among racial minorities in NYC.

Barron is a bullshit Black Panther. He belonged to the racist East Coast wannabes, who started up much later than the original West Coast Black Panther Party of Newton, Cleaver and Seale. The West Coast Panthers were Marxist-Leninist revolutionaries who at least brought lunch and breakfast and other social programs.
They had total contempt for the East Coast frauds, whom they described as "bourgeois cultural nationalist", i.e. Racist Mother Fuckers, who espoused back-to-Africa and other b.s nationalist nonsense.

I am voting for de Blasio. The whole "he gets it" mailing was a little not-so-subtle, but I think he's the best candidate.

Really REALLY bad move on the part of Barron. Simultaneously I'll refuse to vote for him and now (after also doing some reading) am a DeBlasio supporter.
Someone in an interracial marriage shows me that they take race relations seriously and that they're part of the solution - not just in rhetoric - but with their life itself - all of his being. I like it. And I agree with him that some people get it and some people don't. I get it an my interest has been peaked in this candidate.
