Another musician is missing some treasured instruments, except this time they weren't left in a cab. Jazz musician Matthew Jodrell took the N train home after performing in Lower Manhattan on Sunday night, but an evening of jazz music is enough to make anyone nod off (we kid) and that's exactly what he did. Now he's out one Swiss flugelhorn and a Bach Stradivarius trumpet!

The NY Times talked to Jodrell, who told them, “When the train went under water, I fell asleep, somewhere there around Queensboro Plaza. My pocket was slashed, but he did not manage to get my wallet. He was really slick. He must have slit my pants swiftly and quickly.” While he didn't get away with any cash, he did get the instruments, which are valued at $10,000 together.

He noticed the missing possessions when he awoke just before the Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard stop, and reported it to the 114th Precinct. The trumpet was on loan from one of his Juilliard professors, where he'll return to study for a 2nd year next week.

I think he should consider changing classes, at least temporarily.

The 114th took a report? This Astorian is surprised they didn't blow him off by saying there's nothing they can do.

if this means one less jazz musician posturing all hep cat like in the world so be it, sadly he'll find another mouthpiece to lick on

    TIME TO CALL YOUR BLUFF!

Worth over $10,000? A Bach Strad isn't even worth $2000 and that flugel is around $5000. Not $10000 at all.

Side note: I have my old Bach Strad I'll sell you for $1000! I don't use it anymore as I've bought something else three years ago. Great condition. Plays well. Has a blackburn leadpipe. Let's talk.

If you've got $10,000 worth of musical instruments perhaps you should consider springing 40 bucks for a cab.

  • ganghiscon

Not even $40. More like $20.

Seriously, I get why he's not rich and just another struggling musician who'd rather not pay for a cab, but aren't you supposed to be on guard when borrowing $10k worth of someone else's prized possessions, no matter how tired you are?
