Akituusaq The Walrus Dies

0909walrus.jpg The death toll of 2009 keeps growing; the New York Aquarium has just announced that their walrus Akituusaq has died after suffering complications from pneumonia. Their statement reads: "During the past few days, Akituusaq had been under special care by Wildlife Conservation Society veterinarians and received round-the-clock attention. Working tirelessly, WCS staff closely monitored his status and provided dedicated medical care. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved walrus Akituusaq and are proud of the exemplary care that our entire staff provided during this critical time. We know Brooklyn was proud of Akituusaq and many loved him. This is a loss to the whole community." As you might recall, he only just celebrated his 2nd birthday; he was born in the aquarium on June 12th, 2007—and the WCS noted that "walrus births in aquariums are very rare with only 5 surviving to one year of age."

Was he hit while riding a bicycle?

oh man, this is discouraging.
he looks like a friendly, cutie. perhaps walruses are just not keen on being born in aquariums.
perhaps it has something to do with their bristle-like mustaches.

This is clearly a retaliatory assassination by Bloomberg against the walruses for not doing their part in controlling the goose population and protecting his plane. That's what we give them bukkits for, after all.

Damn! He was such a happy little guy..RIP 'tuusaq

That's awful -- and kind of freaky:
I'm playing "pretend you're a tourist" this week, and went to the Aquarium on 9/1 for the first time in eons. This walrus must have been dead/dying while I was there -- though they didn't say anything about it, and I didn't see any walruses at all.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed re: visiting the Bronx Zoo later in the week. Hope all of those animals are hale and hearty ...

Sorry if it my be seen as my playing into some peoples' stuff, but to me, Coney is not a place for ice-loving mammals like walruses & belugas. Neither is any place in Florida. NY Aquaurium's record is going from wildlife center to roadside zoo. Eat 'em or free 'em, but don't play with the big mammals. Not nice, cute as it is to have them around. RIP, didn't even have a chance to grow some tusks.

And yet Wilford Brimley still lives...and he too was born in captivity.

Obviously the walrus wasn't getting his home delivery of diabeetus testing supplies.

This is so sad! My kids loved this walrus more than any animal in any of the NYC wildlife parks. He was always so fun to visit.
