Same-Sex Marriage Goes Into Effect In Vermont

2009_08_hubs.jpg A couple from New York became the first wed in Vermont as the state's same-sex marriage law went into effect after midnight. WPTZ reports, "Bill Slimback and Bob Sullivan waited 17 years before finally tying the knot in a midnight ceremony at a lodge in Duxbury... Slimback said he and Sullivan -- who are from Whitehall, N.Y. -- have long wanted to cement their relationship by marriage. Since they can't legally marry in New York, they chose to have their wedding in Vermont." Aw. Gay marriage, supported by NY Governor David Paterson, has been put on the back burner by the State Senate. In brighter news, Ben & Jerry's is now offering Hubby Hubby-a temporary renaming of Chubby Hubby to honor Vermont's decision.

Which one wears the white veil?

Shouldn't you be playing banjo on a porch on rural Georgia?

Excuse me, IN rural Georgia. Point being, your joke is tired and unfunny and only underscores your own asininity.

Unfortunately, that wont be the most offensive comment you'll read on this site today.

Yeah, and I know it's just what they want..a reaction, and I shouldn't give it. *sigh*

p.s. if you meant my comment about rural Georgia being offensive, I hope you realize my Deliverance reference was only intended to expose one ignorance with another.

okay, that's quite enough my pigeon friend.

I've seen photos of gay men wearing wedding dresses complete with veils at gay marriage protests, commitment ceremonies etc. Why is pointing it out offensive? What a bunch of hypersensitive, wimpy crybabies.

Don't worry Ides. At least one Gothamist reader wasn't offended by your comment. You're a hateful idiot 24/7 so your comments are losing their punch.

Way to go Vermont!

Still can't answer my question, just call me names. Ok, so if a comment about a white veil is offensive, presumably you will be offended when gay men start wearing them to their "weddings".

It's not really offensive.
who let you out of the kitchen?
(now that's offensive)

Ides of March and Valeriob, now that is a beautiful couple. Congrats Guys

"who let you out of the kitchen?
(now that's offensive)"

Are you ninety years old or did you just step out of a time machine from 1950?

'Still can't answer my question, just call me names. Ok, so if a comment about a white veil is offensive, presumably you will be offended when gay men start wearing them to their "weddings".'

As I said, I'm not personally offended. But I do see that you're an idiot, trying to get a rise out of people. I live in Chelsea and see men in drag all the time. I think they are fabulous.

Go Vermont! Yay Gay Marriage! :D

I live in Chelsea and support marriage equality. After reading this article, I am determined to join the fight for equality.

Equality of the species as well? Because you sure take sides in that whole humans vs. cuddly furry creatures beef...

Felix,

Unrelated, but want to join me at a Pro-Health care Rally tomorrow? Even if you don't care about health care reform just asking you to a progressive rally is pissing off ValerieRob and Ides.

Good for you for fighting for equality.

:) Vanessa

Hello Neighbor.
I did the pro-health rally on Sat at St. Vicent Hospital. I did it in memory of Lion Kennedy. I do care about health care reform but I also care about preventive care. It is immoral to interfere with Love and I am ashamed that NYC hasn't passed marriage equality yet.
