City's Swine Flu Plan: Free Swine Flu Vaccine For School Kids, Schools Stay Open

The city announced its plan to combat the H1N1 virus—the swine flu—this fall, and it leads with offering school-aged children free vaccines. The city also emphasized that all New Yorkers get vaccinated for seasonal as well as swine flu (whenever that vaccine is ready) early. Mayor Bloomberg said, "Today is the first of what will be many efforts to keep New Yorkers informed about what we are doing to prepare for the return of the H1N1 and seasonal flu. We can't predict this year's flu season, but we can make sure that City government is fully prepared for whatever happens."

In a change from earlier this year, the city says that schools will stay open in spite of swine flu cases—the schools were closed in the spring because "H1N1 was new and its potential impact was unknown" back then whereas now "H1N1 is better understood." Health Commissioner Thomas Farley and Schools Chancellor Joel Klein said, "The steps needed to control influenza in our schools are simple. By getting your children vaccinated, keeping them home when they’re sick, and teaching them the importance of washing hands and covering coughs, you can help keep our schools open and safe this year." In fact, the city even has graphics (above left) showing people how to cover their coughs and use hand sanitizers! More on the schools' swine flu policy here.

As for the seasonal flu, the city has revamped its flu information website (and has new ads, see above right)—nyc.gov/flu—to give the public information on what they should do and which groups are most at risk (children, pregnant women, the elderly, health care workers, etc.). Plus, by late September, the Department of Health says the "website will feature a locator - searchable by borough or zip code - that anyone can use find a nearby site where vaccine is available." More on the city's general season and swine flu policy here.

The city will also be tracking season and flu infections and giving daily and weekly updates.

Please don't take that vaccine. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1206807/Swine-flu-jab-link-killer-nerve-disease-Leaked-letter-reveals-concern-neurologists-25-deaths-America.html
ore people died from the vaccination than from swine flu.
500 cases of GBS were detected.
The vaccine may have increased the risk of contracting GBS by eight times.
The vaccine was withdrawn after just ten weeks when the link with GBS became clear.
The US Government was forced to pay out millions of dollars to those affected.

I WANT BLOOMBERG TO TAKE THAT VACCINE ON TV LIVE

I agree with you. The government is trying to force a lot of under tested, dubious vaccines on people.

Anyway, the whole swine flu thing is the next manufactured panic the government is going to use as a pretext to grab dictatorial powers. It's for the common good you know. It always is.

I agree with you all, DO NOT TAKE THE VACCINE, the side effects are disconcerting.

Rather take plenty of Liquids (Vitamin C liquids such as Orange Juice), plenty of Antioxidants and plenty of water.

yep, you have to have a good immune system and lots of fluids. Eat lots of Green. And it has nothing to do with hygiene. yes, keep your hands out of your openings but it is what you eat that will built your immune system.

It would be nice for the city to actually spend their money on accurate information.

Speaking as someone who is still recovering from swine flu, I can tell you firsthand that I don't think I coughed or sneezed once. My initial symptoms were severe body aches and, a few hours later, a low-grade fever that lasted for two weeks. A month on, my glands are still painful and swollen.

I am an obsessive hand-washer who carries anti-bacterial foam at all times. I ended up contracting the swine flu NOT from the subway or handrails but from a colleague who got sick the day before I did (and came into the studio, nonetheless).

The city's money would be much better spent handing out free digital thermometers and info cards to all families of school-age children.

what? miss a day of work? but I'll get fired!
the boss will think I'm a slacker and I'll get passed over.
until we get this type of attitude abolished, people like you will get the flu.
just like the a-holes who bitch and whine and stay at their desk during a fire drill, might I mention the WTC towers and how some people stayed at their desks.

"We all gonna die."

Big Nanny State Governement at it again. We know this will never happen but the media needs to begin asking: why is the government hell-bent on forcing little-tested vaccines on everybody? Why the overreaction to swine flu and other diseases?

Meanwhile I'll prefer to take George Carlin's sound advice: "Don't trust anything the government tells you."

Just say no to vaccines, especially if government-ordered.
