Swine Flu Infected 10% of NYC, 90,000 Could Die Nationwide!

083109thestand.jpg In a study due out this week, Thomas Frieden, the head of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, reveals that during the Spring in NYC "about 800,000 people—about 10% of New York City residents—got infected with the flu. That's a lot of people." In all, the virus killed 47 New Yorkers, less than 1% of those infected. But could this be just a prelude to something far worse? Dr. Harold Varmus, president of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, thinks so. A heavy report spearheaded by Varmus and the President's Council of Advisers on Science and Technology predicts that the swine flu could potentially kill between 30,000 and 90,000 Americans in the coming months, infect half of the population, and force some 1.8 million people into hospital ICUs. Frieden, however, thinks the report is over the top, and told C-SPAN, "Everything we've seen in the U.S... suggests we won't see that kind of number if the virus doesn't change." Who to trust? The Daily News could not track Varmus down for comment, probably because he's busy stocking up on canned goods and ammunition for his bunker. (Either that, or raising money to build a new MSKCC Swine Flu Research Wing.)

Irrefutable scientific evidence points to more serious dangers...http://twurl.cc/1j8n

The 90,000 figure is not a prediction, it's one of the plausible scenarios used for planning purposes.

In normal years, 30,000-40,000 people die from the flu.

So it seems that being "generous" with the numbers by estimating high is a very responsible thing to do.

Unfortunately, news media loves a big body count. So what we get is the promise of a scary zombie apocalypse.

Media hype for bring in money and ratings. How many times have we heard the same story over and over again? Remember Y2K?

Yep. It always sounds more frightening that way.

I love a good ol' hyped up fear mongering as much as the next guy, but seriously this is one meme that has become quite tired. Give it a rest Gothamist, people aren't buying this meme and they don't care.

Pretext for martial law. It's coming.

It will also be quite the money maker for BIG PHARMA, they are absolutely salivating at the thought of a pandemic. The money they will make on Vaccines alone is getting their nether regions all butter up.

BLEH!

I love the ODS. It's exactly the same as the crazies who said Bush was setting up FEMA concentration camps.

Your "less than 1%" actually means 0.005%. I mean it is factually true, it is less than 1%, but come on, it's a huge exaggeration to say that instead of 0.005%. :-)

"But could this be just a prelude to Swine Flu Part Deux: The Swinier the Deader?"

Not only i this stupid, but it's also somewhat in bad taste considering the piece about the cop who died of swine flu posted later in the day.
