Last Night's Action: A Sweep

2009_08_yanks831.jpg

  • Yankees 8, White Sox 3: Being up six games in the standings has its advantages. They include pitching a starter for only three innings. The Yankees did that with Joba Chamberlain, then got three innings out of Alfredo Aceves en route to a three-game sweep of the White Sox. Johnny Damon and Mark Teixeira each went deep. This was a 3-2 game when Phil Hughes got the last out of the seventh, but the Yankees blew it open later. Up next is a road trip to Baltimore and Toronto (and Boston is six games behind).

  • Mets 4, Cubs 1: How about Nelson Figueroa? He struck out 10 Cubs and singled in a run as the Mets avoided a sweep in Chicago. The Brandeis product is part of a pathetic patchwork rotation with which the Mets will ride out the year. The Mets continue their trip in Colorado to start the new week.

  • Red Bulls 1, Crew 0: A little less than a year ago, these teams played for the MLS Cup. Now the Red Bulls are ecstatic to get two wins in a row. Dane Richards' long run accounted for the only goal.

  • Liberty 77, Sky 63: Another New York-Chicago matchup, and another attempt to masquerade as a decent team. The Liberty didn't look like a last-place team for one day, at least.

Pathetic? You mean injured?

You know what's pathetic? Your sports coverage.

Excuses, excuses. All teams in every sports league have to deal with injuries.

You're kidding, right? They have ONE pitcher left from their original rotation. They have ALL of their power on the DL (Beltran, Delgado, Wright.) All teams deal with injuries. Not all teams get decimated. You're a putz.

Having the ability to prop up a "starter" for only 3 doesn't seem like an advantage. Why not carry all the Yanks' starting pitchers for 3 innings and rest them 'til December, when they can sleep winter away under comfy quilts? The relief staff are awesome/have been awesome, but WTF? They're not limitless resources. 3 quality innings doesn't a starter make. Sorry.

Thank you Whit Sox for letting a team that doesn't deserve it get six ahead in the AL East.

White Sux. ;(
