Friends and fans continue to mourn the death of Adam Goldstein, aka DJ AM, who was found dead in his SoHo apartment Friday afternoon. The Daily News and Post are both reporting that police found a half-empty bag of crack underneath his chest. Initial reports mentioned a crack pipe and prescription drugs at the scene—among them the Post now says were bottles of Xanax, painkillers Vicodin and oxycodone and antacid Prilosec.
Goldstein had claimed to be sober for 11 years and was in the process of working on a show for MTV described as Intervention for young people. In one video interview for the show, DJ AM was talking about an incident for the series where he went to one addict's local bodega to buy a crack pipe and what a powerful effect it had on him. He said, "I was holding it that my palms were sweaty and I was like, 'Wait a minute, this is not smart for me to be holding this.'"
Celebrity friends of Goldstein continue to share their thoughts about his death on Twitter. Travis Barker, who collaborated with DJ AM and was also in the traumatic plane fire that may have been a factor in Goldstein turning back to drugs, tweeted, "I'll never forget everything we've been thru and every time i play the drums i'll think of you. U were an amazing friend/DJ/human being." He also wrote, "this really fucks me up." Paris Hilton also tweeted her thoughts following the death of her friend since she was 15. She wrote, "It's so hard to accept that I'm not going to be able to see him or talk to him again. There are no right words for this, I feel so sad."
Goldstein's ex Mandy Moore took the old-fashioned route of public mourning and issued a statement saying, "I am absolutely heartbroken. For those of us lucky enough to have known him, Adam radiated a contagious exuberance for life and also personified the very definition of a true friend. To say that he will be missed beyond words is an understatement. My heart goes out to his loved ones."
TMZ says that the NYC Medical Examiner's office has returned Goldstein's body and it may be transported to Los Angeles for a memorial service. TV Guide posted a recent interview with DJ AM about the new recovery program where he revealed that he had tried rehab several times, but "none of them worked for me." He also told them, "As long as I am sober, I will try to help other people stay sober. Whether there’s a camera there or not."

I don't understand why the death of this crackhead nobody is news.
I agree - who is this? Has anyone been to a club and heard his talent? Seriously has ANYONE here heard him mix etc?
plenty of people have. check out 10 of his mixes posted here: http://bestdjsoftware.com/wordpress/?p=124. There are also plenty of clips from his sets on youtube.
What? You've never heard this dude DJ? this dude was legendary! He pressed the return button for play on his Macbook better than any person on the planet. Sometimes he would lower the volume with dither and then slowly segue into another song with fade. It was amazing. seriously, they will write about this dudes skills for decades to come.
DJ AM, a.k.a. "Paul Croakenfold".
Ha! *God makes a note*
noble price for you, sir.
Hipsters are fascinated by the insignificant & worthless. News websites of this type are widely read by hipsters.
Thanks Soggy... dead on. Most of the people that flippantly use the word 'hipster' to describe any generic young person in NYC wouldn't know one if they tripped over one while drinking a PBR in Williamsburg.
To that point-- I would say that it's not really hipsters that are flipping out over this... it's more Euros and club dbags. DJ AM was much more of an LA celeb, so it's mostly only club music types in NYC that are all over this.
I bet you $800 your death will not make any blogs or websites.
At least Mandy Moore had some class in issuing an ACTUAL statement to the press-- something more than 140 characters. There's something extremely tacky about mourning a friend via Twitter. If I die an untimely death, my friends better not "Tweet" about how much they miss me. I'd want something a little more substantial & meaningful!!
Nobody outside of club junkies and hipsters heard of this guy until the plane crash.
Including the biggest hipsters of them all... blink 182.
Geez, enough of this pos...
Talentless crackhead hipster gets no respect. Saving it for a genuine under appreciated artist.
MTV show + Mandy Moore's Ex + Blink 182 drummer plane crash = definitely not a hipster. About as mainstream as you can get, actually.
exactly
Twitter is for idiots, plain and simple.
This is real irony. Kinda like when that rapper "Kevlar" got killed by getting shot in the chest.
holy shit. somebody got a case of the mondays??? are you seriously turning the death of this guy into a diatribe against hipsters and twitter? i may not have known much or cared much about his work, but he was a human. if you don't care, go complain about dog parks or subway fares on some other stream. or better yet, see a therapist.
yeasty mondays
Another sad OD. But as with Heath Ledger's "accident" and Michael Jackson's "homicide," I'm sure somebody will find somebody aside from the addict to pin it on.
Gothamist needs to place a moratorium on the use of the word hipster. Most of the commenters don't know what it means, and it's getting really annoying.
Also, someone died. just because you didn't know them there's no reason to be an uncaring ass.
I have far more sympathy for the neighbors in his overpriced SoHo building who were forced to breathe this pos' secondhand crack smoke.
They weren't "forced," most soho residents don't really have to do much breathing as they are mostly walking zombies.
