Really, Rangel? More Questions About Rep's Finances

2009_08_rangel500.jpg News about Rep. Charles Rangel's assets—and his problems disclosing them—continues to trickle in. After adding $500,000 in previously undisclosed assets to his 2007 finance report, the Post revealed that he also forgot to disclose the sale of a Harlem townhouse—worth as much as $1.3 million—and also that he "failed to reveal a staggering $3 million in various business transactions over the same period." This, from the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee!

Further, the Post points out that Rangel claimed on mortgage papers that the West 132nd Street property was his primary residence—which raises many more questions because he's living in multiple rent-stabilized apartments at Lenox Terrace! (Rent-stabilized apartments must be the primary residence in order to get the cheaper rent.) An author of mortgage lending books tell the Post, "It's fraud or a mistake... Owner-occupied dwellings -- where you hang your hat -- always get better interest rates and lower down payments than rental properties or second homes."

The NY Times reports, "A spokesman for Mr. Rangel, a Democrat who has represented Harlem since 1971, issued a written statement saying the [most recently discovered] errors were inadvertent," and then details the House Ethics investigations into Rangel's finances, which cover the rent-stabilized apartments, his vacation villa in the Dominican Republic, fundraising for a graduate school named after him, and taking a trip paid for by lobbyists.

Voting against him was one of the smartest moves I made last year.

This all for naught.

The people of Harlem don't mind that he's a crook because, as they say, "he looks like us". That's their way of being "post-racial" and honoring MLK's vision.

The Pelosi Congress won't proceed because, if they did, they would have to impeach, not only Rangel, but quite a few others too.

The Obama/Holder Dept. of Justice won't investigate because "he's one of us" and God knows they don't like prosecuting minorities. Witness the Black Panther voter intimidation case and the Bill Richardson influence peddling case. They dropped those like a hot potato. Besides, they would rather spend their time criminalizing political differences with the previous administration.

Like Ted Kennedy, Rangel will die in office, the equivalent of a European Nobleman or third world kleptocrat who lorded over the serfs and imposed more and more taxes while he made sure to evade those very same taxes.

The United States of America is now, without a doubt, a Banana Republic.

This sad, criminal bastard is nothing like Ted Kennedy. Kennedy had flaws, but they were long ago overshadowed by his accomplishments.

The bear market just keeps revealing more and more political corruption.

Waiting for the higher ups in Washington will get rid of him is a pipe dream. Expecting a Republican will take his seat in the next election is a fantasy. But, hoping the people of Harlem will wake up and nominate another Democrat to get rid of a long-time corrupt hack like in Newark, Washington DC and Detroit is a possibility.

The way details are dripping out on this affair a little at a time, I think Rangel is destined to spend awhile ranked highly on the nyscandals.com scoreboard.

Rangel, chairman of Ways and Means - -the committee that oversees taxation!!! -- makes these "mistakes" and what are the ramifications? None. I make a far less substantial mistake, and the Feds are all over me.

At best, I'd like to think that his situation illustrates just how unseemly our tax system is. At worst, he's an entrenched pol who's been working the system and his influience to get deals that you and I would not.

I'd love to see him retired by the voters, but as someone else said, that's not likely. God forbid that Pelosi would actually do something about this embarrassment...

people tend to vote for something they see in themselves. i guess the people who vote for him are a bunch of thieves.
