No Gadhafi In NJ—Moammar Will Take Manhattan

2009_08_moamm.jpg NJ lawmakers are probably happy now: Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi will not be staying at the Libyan government-owned mansion in Englewood, NJ when he comes to the U.S. next month to address the United Nations. Rep. Steve Rothman announced yesterday, "I am very pleased that Moammar Khadafy will apparently not be coming to Englewood," apparently because Gadhafi's visit—which would include a large Bedouin tent—"would have presented unnecessary safety and security issues for the residents of Englewood and the Libyan diplomats." And the public uproar probably helped pressure the Libyan government, too. Instead, the Daily News reports, "Khadafy is expected to seek rooms for himself and his large entourage at one of New York's luxury hotels." Hmm—will he seek a hotel with rooftop space for him to set up the tent?

Tent or Hotel, those Oil contracts gotta be signed somewhere.

  • Mr Mel

The only visits he gets is from Louis Farrakhan.

  • just saying

Why can't Qaddafi stay in Newark? There must be a few vacant, burnt-out lots where he can pitch his tent.

  • NannyState

I'd recommend Downshore: plenty of cameltoe there.

  • openheads

Or maybe scenic East New York!

  • Rfive

Qaddafi is gangsta. Before Ice-T. Female bodyguards who would probably kill for him. Straight up criminally minded...

  • tingo

Isn't he head of a terrorist regime? Wow, we're such a hypocritical country.

Oh well, I guess he must be giving us oil.

Personally I liked the Jersey joke, and I don't believe that MrManhattan is too dumb to understand the reality of the situation, just that he prefers making Jersey jokes, which is every New Yorker's god-given right.

Being that these guys are politicians, they might want to reconsider letting him stay in their town after getting a look at his hot virgin bodyguards: http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/news/357296/Carlsberg-dont-do-bodyguardsbut-if-they-did-theyd-be-just-like-Colonel-Muammar-Gaddafis.html

Unless of course these politicians are the type that pretend they hate gays even though they like men. I'd rather listen to Christine Quinn bitch about helicopter flights on Hudson.

This is America, a country that should project its supposed greatness and take the high road in this case. I don't think the Colonel intended to rob the local convenient store or anything, so really who cares? I think there might be a property taxes issue though, but I haven't read up on it enough to know for sure.

Bland, dry, Jersey jokes that don't even fit into the context of the story amuse you?

    Okay Brighteyes.

  • MrManhattan

While I think my joke had plenty of context, and I kicked your butt on international law, you're probably right about bland and dry. And you can add dated. New Jersey is polluted jokes? How '70's!

As PTG points out I have a God given right to make New Jersey jokes, and with that right comes the responsibility to make them fresh, topical and timely. Thanks for pointing that out.

  • shoobywillis

maybe we can have a repeat of castro's stay at the shelburne in the 60s.

  • MrManhattan

"I'd like a chicken sandwich, with a live chicken!"

(my favorite line from the "First Family" comedy album, thanks for taking me back!)

  • grandzu

So when Libya doesn't put out the welcome mat for any visiting American politicians, those same elected scumbags will be decrying Libya's hostile attitude.

  • nevilleross

You can bet your bottom dollar, they would.

  • Rocknrope

Anyone remember that song from back in the day...

    "K-I-L-L Colonel Ghadafi!"

    "K-I-L-L Colonel Ghadafi!"

    "K-I-L-L Colonel Ghadafi!"

    "Kill Colonel Ghadafi!"

That was back in the day when we just talked about killing despots we didn't agree with who didn't pose an immediate threat to our country.

  • MrManhattan

Now for the new Turnpike signs:

Welcome to New Jersey: So polluted, even Gadhafi wouldn't visit.

  • openheads

Good way to not have a grasp of the topic you are discussing.

He WANTED to stay in NJ. Englewood said no.

I mean, you can't let little things like reality or reading comprehension skills get in the way of lame jokes, right?

  • MrManhattan

Good way to not have a grasp on International law you are discussing.

A state cannot override international law, if he wanted to stay, what was Mayor pipsqueak going to do, send out the State Troopers to create an international incident (and judging by the looks of Ghadafi's all-female bodyguard staff, loose a large number of troopers in the process)??

  • openheads

The Mayor put pressure on him through the media & such. Outlets ran with the story. So he decided to stay elsewhere.

What does any of this have to do with your hamfisted attempt at a joke?

  • MrManhattan

"The Mayor put pressure on him through the media & such."

So you retaliate for one "hamfisted joke" with another. Touche.
