Last night, a man crossing Queens Boulevard at 44th Street was hit by an unmarked police car. The Daily News reports witnesses say the pedestrian Evelio Villa, 47, and his girlfriend had the right of way and the car went through a red light—"This guy was flying. He went like a bat out of hell. There was no screeching brakes, no tire marks, nothing." However, a police union source tells the paper that the car from the 109th Precinct had the green light and that Villa was intoxicated (another police source says the car turned on its sirens when it saw Villa). Villa's girlfriend says the car was going slow but actually accelerated as it approached, "I tried to grab him, but by that time he was in the air." Villa is in stable condition at Elmhurst Hospital with a fractured shoulder and the police officer driving the car has not been charged.

These friggin nypd's will do ANYTHING to not get in trouble. Crooked mother fu*%ers! The whole lot of them.
Just a fractured shoulder? Consider yourself lucky. Somewhere in between both of their stories is the truth, but I wouldn't doubt Evelio's story. They have a habit of turning on their lights just before blasting through red light, and then turning them off again.
"a police union source" if they ever sided with someone other than the police I might value this tidbit. As is the source may as well be a blind and drunk donkey for all the credibility it has.
"another police source says the car turned on its sirens when it saw Villa." How about brakes and the siren. Too much to ask. The C in CPR is gone and all the NYPD is left with is PR. God knows they need to spin it often enough.
Professionalism and Respect is very much lacking in the NYPD these days. It emanates from the top down -- phonies like Kelly should be removed.
Whos going to remove them? The corrupt pols? ha. The whole system is screwed. God, its depressing sometimes.
I meant all they have it PR and Press Releases/ relations. Professionalism and Respect are a myth?
sounds like a whole mess of half truths up in them thar sources. just get a real investigation going, no nypd intimidation tactics and smears.
radio logs, surveillance tapes, equal access to them without fear of reprisals.
what does it matter if Villa was intoxicated - he was hit by a car - its always the drivers fault -
No, not necessarily. If the driver had the right-of-way and it is deemed that (s)he was going at a prudent speed, it is unlikely that the driver will be held accountable in any way. As an extreme example, a driver who strikes someone walking straight into incoming traffic is not at fault.
That entire road is cursed.
Why should the cops be treated differently from any other drivers? As long as the cop wasn't drunk he shouldn't be charged, as is always the case. Also: bicyclists run red lights! Where is the outrage there?
Oh please, you're all acting like cops committing brutality against drunk Hispanics in Queens isn't standard operating procedure. Walk around some night, this shit happens all the time. This incident just happens to use a cruiser rather than a baton.
yes, it is obvious from the reports that this was indeed a racially motivated incident. good work detective.
I think youre barkin up the wrong tree here. I seems we're all on the same page that the cops suck on this one.
A group of pedestrians I was in the middle of almost got nailed with this scenario recently while crossing with a green light: An unmarked car going really fast down Roosevelt Ave towards Flushing (no turn signal). Just before 61st St, it turns on the lights and sirens, doesn't slow down, and makes a quick left turning north of 61st St. The pedesrians scramble. The cops laugh.
To learn that on an even faster road like Queens Blvd, they misjudged the pedestrians' position and their speed does not surprise me a bit.
On my bike commute, I see cops burn red lights on a regular basis.
Villa is fortunate that his face did not repeatedly obstruct the officer's steel toed boots.
