Breaking: DJ AM Found Dead In Manhattan Apartment

2009_08_djamm.jpg Celebrity DJ Adam Goldstein, known as DJ AM, was found dead in his Lafayette Street apartment this afternoon. He was 36. According to TMZ, "Sources tell us he was found in his apartment at around 5:20 PM. We're told drug paraphernalia was found at the scene. Our sources say DJ AM had not been seen or heard from for a few days -- one of his friends went to check on him, but got no response after knocking on his apartment door."

The friend called the authorities and the FDNY reportedly gained access to the apartment. TMZ later added, "Sources say a pipe commonly used to smoke drugs was also found inside the bedroom." DJ AM, who had been engaged to Nicole Ritchie, survived a September 2008 plane crash, when a private Learjet crashed on takeoff in South Carolina; the crash took the lives of four others. DJ AM and the other survivor, Blink-182's Travis Barker, suffered second- and third-degree burns from their injuries. He had also spoken openly about his weight battle, previous drug addiction and a suicide attempt.

Just this past Sunday, DJ AM had thrown out the first pitch at the Mets home game. His last Twitter message, sent on Tuesday, was from Grandmaster Flash's New York New York "New york, new york. Big city of dreams, but everything in new york aint always what it seems."

Update: TMZ now reports that DJ AM was "completely devastated" after his girlfriend Hayley Wood allegedly called things off in the past week, adding, "We're also told he was having a very hard time dealing with post-traumatic stress from the plane crash he survived in September of last year. DJ AM has been sober for nine years, but our sources say the breakup and the stress over the plane crash could have caused him to start using drugs again."

36 year old men: don't date girls in their early 20s and expect them to commit to you or be in a long term relationship with you. They are 22.

  • Snoopy

Mike Nicholson and Hugh Hefner do it all the time. Why couldn't DJ AM expect the same commitment??

  • Leon Freilich

    EPITAPH

Please try to learn from me:

    DJ AM OD.

  • Snoopy

He wasn't going out with that Nicole Ronson bitch that is into girls was he? I believe she is also a DJ. You know the one. She goes out with that freckled face semi-actress from Disney World.

Was he related to Al Goldstein?

  • nurserachet

@thefacts it takes quite a bit of skill to be a dj. And to be one that people like and respect a whole lot more than that.

  • pigeon

Agreed. A lot of people call themselves DJs, but not many of them are very good. It takes skill and a lot of practice to be a good DJ. The fact that people still pull the DJ'ing-doesn't-require-skill-or-talent card in 2009...well I guess it just shows how little they know.

  • thefacts

Au contraire, I happen to know several DJs very well on a social and personal level.

They tend to be nice, charismatic people. But their musical skills are negligible. Don't believe the hype. Charisma isn't talent.

When Julliard starts teaching DJing, then you can say it requires talent.

  • nurserachet

Uh huh, and I'm sure all the DJs you know are top of the notch world class DJs like he was. Get a clue. You have no idea what you're talking about here.

How many other popular figures in music over the past hundred years attended Juliard?? I'm pretty sure not a single member of The Beatles did, Elvis sure didn't, Grandmaster Flash definitely didn't... I'm NOT even comparing DJ AM to these people, just trying to illustrate that this Juliard crap is irrelevant.

  • thefacts

"I'm sure all the DJs you know are top of the notch world class DJs like he was. "

Don't be so snarky, my friend. You presume correctly. They were at the top of the game. The absolute top.

One had a BBC documentary centered on his career and was featured prominently at an exhibition on dance music at the the Experience Music Project (EMP), a museum created by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen dedicated to popular music.

The exhibit went on tour and actually was shown at Lincoln Center, just across the street, btw, from Julliard. A book on dance music began with his name.

The other DJs I know also were seminal and very well known.

Perhaps in your irrelevancy you find it hard to believe that others meet fame, but, believe me, we exist.

  • Snoopy

Say no more than, "believe me, we exist." I believe your side of the story.

Murry the K was a DJ. Allan Freed was a DJ. Big Dan Ingram was a DJ. Cousin Brucie was a DJ. Don K. Reed was a DJ. Alison Steele was a DJ.

DJ AM was a platter spinner.

What station did Roscoe work for? He was a DJ also.

  • thefacts

Roscoe was on NEW, no? And don't forget Jocko and his Rocket Ship, who called himself an 'engineer' not a DJ.

    http://www.1960sailors.net/Jocko12-64WADO_web.mp3

But the DJs I knew actually spinned in clubs. They invented the techniques that these jerks think they own. DJ AM will be forgotten next year. The guys I know are in the Dance Music Hall of Fame.

  • nurserachet

So ok the guys you know are super famous. Uh huuuuh. They invented shit and all that, and now apparently we're awarding merit on proximity to Juliard.

You are making sense. And I totally believe you!

And I'm so impressed you know famous DJs. I actually know some famous DJs also. Thing is though, they're ACTUALLY my friends so I've seen them work very hard to get where they are, and I respect them and I also respect the music and the scene and by extension this poor guy who died.

  • thefacts

These DJs ARE my friends. Read what I wrote: "socially and personally". We hang out in each other's houses, in summer homes, and go on vacation together.

Now, go do something productive. How about learning a musical instrument to impress your little unknown DJ friends? Say, the upright organ or the skin flute.

    Loser!

  • thefacts

How much talent does it take to be a DJ? You go to Julliard for that?

Glad to see the other commenters are as cynical about this story and this guy as I was.

  • suepart

although his death and life means nothing to me, the lobby of the building he lives in- oops, lived in- actually looks like a mausoleum, a bit of a strange and morbid design with a bench/stool laid out almost as if to receive a coffin. its feng shui (despite its curvature) is also strange that cars from the williamsburg bridge "ram" into it daily, an extreme sign of bad luck. anyway, who cares.

  • the3rdbridge

Are you f'ing kidding me? He was a human being??? He was a celebrity (sort of)! The deal is: You get lots of money and can sleep with anyone you want and people who don't know you will talk shit as much as they want, even if you die.

Personally, I think the only reason that I know who this guy is now and that he's dead is because of the slow August news cycle. Fuck this drug using loser retard, let's talk about petrodollars!

  • skipgates

The Final Destination. He was supposed to die in the plane crash. Can Travis Barker be next?

  • aspiringrapper

He may have been a human being, but apparently he was also a junkie, which makes him a pathetic, desperate fool. Drugs are bad, m'kay?

  • pigeon

He'd been clean for 9 years. He survived a horrific plane crash in which he had been severely burned. Who's to say he wasn't on serious painkillers because of his burns? Not to mention PTSD. I can only imagine how experiencing those things would definitely test an addict's resolve to stay sober. Don't pass judgment and oversimplify the matter.

  • whitecastlerock

Whatever the case, he's dead now-may he rest in peace

  • gatsby

I am embarrassed to see so much disregard for human life. He was a HUMAN BEING. please get over your need to sound snide and superior. This is not the time nor place to do so. He was a beloved and troubled person. I will remember him for his laughter, bravery, music, and spirit.

  • NannyState

Pretty soon, they're going be chaining "ghost turntables" to the parking meters.

  • drewo

The "ghost bicycles", which you are referring to, are in memory of people who have been killed by other people.

    Idiot.

  • Snoopy

If anyone is (was) an idiot, I believe it was DJ AM, now DJ PM. They found an empty bag of crack underneath him. Get over it. The life style these DJ's have is not conducive to living a long life. If the bikers can honor their dead so should the DJs of the world honor theirs.

  • T

Yeah, they should really spend more time being nasty, bigoted internet commenters.

  • thefacts

Congratulation, Grumpy, er drewo. You are the first person on Gothamist ever to berate NannyState, whose wit and dry humor is superb.

Stop taking yourself so seriously and lighten up, old boy.

  • Steven

Too bad he didn't get the help he needed. Suicidal is never the answer.

  • kat

I wasn't a fan, but it's still sad to see someone young die. Drugs suck.

I'm sorry I linked to this article on twitter, the comments here are pathetic.

We are all going to die. Wonder how many people you know will have the same attitude when you croak. (LOL, yes, that was meant to be incendiary.)

In any event, he actually seems like he was a nice guy from certain things I've read. Too bad.

  • bowelmovment_man

Wonderful news..another useless, shallow, selfish piece of shit druggie dead. Keep 'em coming!

  • gatsby

you are embarrassing yourself with your ignorance. Perhaps you have not yet been exposed to the value of human life. It is a complex, difficult, joyous and fulfilling endeavor. Expand your horizons. Adam was a genuine soul who made a good living in the public eye. Never one to take advantage, we could all learn something from that.

  • bowelmovment_man

Ummmm..no, wrong on all counts you presumptuous douchebag.

Here's another thing for you to chew on: I don't value your life. Now fuck off.

  • Mr Mel

I thought we had the double entry occurrences problems solved.

  • gatsby

  • GREGORYABUTLER

DJ AM was a genuine junkie who died with a crackpipe in his mouth.

Don't romanticize him - he lived a crackhead's pathetic life and died a crackhead's pathetic death.

  • buttface

According to article linked from here about his girlfriend, he sued the families of the pilots who died in the SC plane crash.

    If that's true, good riddance.

  • mellow_fellow

You sure he sued the pilots' families and not the pilots' estates?

  • MrCow

what is this? the 3rd DJ this week?

  • nurserachet

If you're including DJ Ted Kennedy.

  • jamesdamian

    FTW!

  • JasonTheArgonaut

DJ AM was found at around 5:20 PM

    ---

    FAIL

  • valeriob

I see what you did there

  • freddynyc

Sorry, but I wished I could say that I gave a rat's azz...

  • nurserachet

Errr.. if you guys don't know who he is, try using the google instead of being insensitive freaks.

This is quite a blow for the thousands upon thousands of fans he had (not to mention family and friends), and the second this freakin week for people in the scene here in NY.

Besides that though, why is everyone dying this year? It's so weird.

  • GREGORYABUTLER

Well, this idiot died because he's a fucking junkie.

They found a "pipe commonly used to smoke drugs" in this fool's apartment - in other words, what the homeless guy on my corner would call a crackpipe

When a crackhead dies, it is NOT a "tragedy" - it's a statistically predictable phenomenon!

Junkies die every day - this was just a famous junkie that died!

  • blkiznewprez

if you were in the scene you'd know it's Ratchet and not Rachet. yeeeah, i've seen you L train kids "rocking" the Transformers tees.

  • nurserachet

If you were me, you'd know why I spelled it that way. And if you're speaking of the character from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest than the name is actually Ratched anyway...

  • s0me_g0d

    @ nurserachet

Perhaps this DJ is the one who is insensitive... to all the people he let down. He had a second chance at life and he blew it.

  • longacre

Did Mary Kate Olsen find his body and call her masseuse?

  • Mr Mel

I thought the masseuse called Mary Kate.

  • s0me_g0d

    Never heard of him.

  • valeriob

Who is this guy? Why are we talking about his overdose?

If you want to do big boy drugs, you should probably learn to control your :wick wick wick wicka: habits.

  • babyhitler

2009 Deathmobile strikes again! Fuck! I knew I should have gone with DJ AM as the young dude instead of will ferrell. I still say Dick Clark is gonna go before the year is done but I'm changing my young person to Mischa Barton.

  • Wza

Hmm..Final Destination comes out soon and all these celebrities are dropping like flies?

Smells like a promotional stunt to me.

  • donner

Sad. Saw him at the Met game on Sunday- he looked happy and healthy but threw a terrible first pitch- lots of boos... now I feel kind of guilty.

  • Mr Mel

Did you really boo a honorary first pitch at a baseball game?

  • Snoopy

    This is really really sad.

    What was his name again?

  • blkiznewprez

hmmm, crack pipe and prescription meds. what was his contribution to music, again? *yawn*

this better not divert attention from MJ's bday parties tomorrow.

  • longacre
what was his contribution to music, again?
He knocked up Lionel Richie's daughter, I think that counts for something.
  • theevilone

He dated Nicole Ritchie but didn't knock her up. That was some other dude.

Musically, he was a member of Crazytown that sang that really annoying song Butterfly, then he did some with Madonna and Jay Z, so he's not completely devoid of talent.

  • babyhitler

thanks alot dude. Now I have "COME MY LADY COME COME MY LADY. YOU'RE MY BUTTERFLY SUGAR BABY!" stuck in my head on repeat. I've tried years to forget and BAM it's back in there again.

  • blkiznewprez

    sonufabitch.

  • Rocknrope

Was this the guy who was really fat before?

  • nicemarmot

Yes. I have never been quite sure what this dude was famous for. But, if you include him, I believe he will be the 14th famous/quasi-famous dead person the media will make way too big a deal over this summer.

  • wow 14th street

    and Mayor Bloomberg.

  • JacqueMehoff

    so did Hugh Hefner.

  • John_Matrix

artie lange outlived this guy. unbelievable.

  • Geokaii

Well that's unfortunate. Wasn't he scheduled to DJ the MJ tribute thing tomorrow night?
