Actor Won't Give Up Vet Records

Somehow a simple "dog bites dog" headline has garnered nearly a week of news coverage. Actor Gerard Butler (or his "people" as it were) is refusing to give up any vet records (including a bill) or photos showing his pug Lolita was bit by a Queens couple's greyhound, called Mayfly. The couple says Butler threw their dog against a fence during the incident, and told them it should be "put down." WABC talked to Fred Varecka (Mayfly's owner), and he told them, "[Butler]'s in damage control mode right now to try and protect his image." A few more new details: there were two greyhounds, and Varecka says one of them, "lunged at the pug and barked but my wife had good control of the dogs." When they asked him to leash his pug, Butler walked away and they followed him, and that's when Butler hulked out; "In a matter of seconds he slapped the dogs face, dog went flying up against the fence."

Not defending Butler, but greyhounds are about 3x the size of the Italian greyhound picture.

Our neighbors down the street have 2, even if i was armed with a taser, i would be afraid, these dogs can average 60-80lbs.

Really if his story were true why wouldn't he end this thing by just producing the vet bill or identifying the vet and letting the press talk to him?

So far makes me lean towards believing the greyhound owners' side of it.

With Christian Bale as your anger management counselor, this was bound to happen.

People, we have leash laws in New York for a reason. Ignoring them seems to assume that either everyone else's dog is friendly and OK with your pup approaching; or that unfriendly dogs should be put down. Which is a sentiment the actor here allegedly invoked.

Bottom line: owners are obligated to have control of their dogs. If Butler wasn't using a leash, he is responsible for whatever may have happened.

So what do you call the person responsible for a guard dog? Guardguardian?

Those guard dogs are working dogs. Dogs and other animals should be treated as property because they are different species. People of Color were treated as property once as well. IT is wrong. I don't own my cat but in fact I care for him and I am his guardian.

I actually don't disagree with your line of reasoning here, felix. But if you want to persuade others to have more responsible relationships with animals, it helps to speak in a language they understand. If you use language that they perceive as marginalized, you won't get your point across, but you will get to feel superior to them.

I've been looking out for animals a long, long time.

thanks for the advice. Words are powerful and the corrupt animal abusers who profit from exploiting animals don't want other species to be recognize as sentient beings. It is important that we change how people refer to other species that minimized them. i am working on something but I plan to soon join the guardian movement in NYC.

The lack of outrage about this incident proves that on gothamist when it comes to animal cruelty it's really about the "actor" and not the act. If this was about a hipster band or a black bronx girl people would be going nuts. Since it was done by someone people like (but do not really know) the act is excused. Hypocrites.

oh yes that reminds me..that band is going down!!!!!

No, my first boyfriend was an actor. It turned me off to actors and boyfriends.

But to be serious, taking on different personalities for work, leads to being schizoid in life.

Believe it or not, he has a movie coming out in October entitled "Law Abiding Citizen." Seriously.

Italian greyhounds are a separate breed that are much smaller than regular greyhounds. They're actually known for being extremely delicate and they get injured easily. They are much much smaller than a (regular) adult greyhound.

All greyhounds get injured easily. They are very thin skinned, and fragile.

Pity it wasn't a pit bull rather than a greyhound. I would have paid to see Butler try to smack one of those. I would have paid even more for a pit bull's owner to let go of the leash in that circumstance.
