Last night, Democratic mayoral hopefuls City Comptroller Bill Thompson and City Councilman Tony Avella went head to head during a debate that aired on NY1. Only their main target was Mayor Bloomberg, the now-Independent (who is also on the Republican ticket); Thompson railed, "For the last eight years we have had a Republican mayor, Mike Bloomberg, who has focused on Wall Street, big developers and the wealthy. From jobs to housing to education, we need to go down a different path in this city," while Avella said, "The people of this city twice voted for term limits. The message could not have been clearer. And the arrogance, I'm sorry the arrogance of Billionaire Mike Bloomberg to think he's so important that he could overturn the term limits law, I think is disgraceful. I think he should be turned out for that reason alone."
While Thompson slammed Bloomberg for his incredible campaign spending, Avella questioned Thompson's acceptance of donations from pension fund managers that do business with the city. Avella said he would stop the NYPD's stop-and-frisk policy while Thompson said it was an effective tool. The NY Times reports that the candidates did have some issues with questions, "Mr. Thompson hesitated when asked whether the city should name a subway station or street after Michael Jackson. Yes, he finally said. (Mr. Avella said yes, too.) Mr. Avella, meanwhile, agonized over whether he would support Gov. David A. Paterson next year in an election. In a primary, he finally said, no. Mr. Thompson wasted no time in saying yes."
The Daily News points out that both candidate acknowledged Bloomberg was a better mayor than Rudy Giuliani. The Democratic primary is on September 15.

there were no jobs created, unemployment at 10 percent, yes, really. the last four years says it all.
I love how Bloomy's opposition assumes they know whats best for us, the voters. What we if think he is more qualified than the other candidates, and actually want to vote for him ?
Why deny us our choice ?
On that note ... Anyone else for whatever John Lui has finally decided he is running for! Screw him!
Considering Bloomberg didn't give a rat's ass about what the voters wanted regarding term limits, why would anyone want to vote for this person?
i wasn't sure that you knew what you were talking about until that last sentence. thank you for sharing your ignorance. his name is john liu, and he's running for comptroller.
John Liu lies. I was at a Democratic breakfast back in Feb., in Brooklyn where he announced he was running for PA and then he switch race to comptroller. Liu has a long history of lying. John Liu has no respect for the law. He continue to air his fake ad when he never worked in a sweatshop. His father was convicted of Bank Fraud and he was now slapped with 587 summonses by the Sanitation Dept for plastering the city with his campaign posters. Worse, he made his mother stand in a rally crying and she still stood by her story that she never worked in a sweatshop factory. Now liu is playing race card and calling the DN's reporter Erin racist and out of touch with immigrants. Horrible man. No wonder Charles Rangel and Al Sharpton endorsed him
HOTCUP, sweety ...
I think you need to fix your sarcasm-o-meter
avella's good at soliciting applause from an audience, but i think it's only because he has a sort of layman's understanding of what's going on in this city.
evidence: "let's ask the teachers how to run the schools." - incredibly vague, apparently unaware of millions of dollars worth of research that does just this.
thompson has experience and comprehension, but might be too much of a weenie to stand up to bloomberg. bloomberg might do some controversial things with his clout and connections, but at least he's got them. does thompson? i'm not convinced that he'll do any better as mayor.
i just hope people realize there's a municipal election going on.
evidence: "let's ask the teachers how to run the schools." - incredibly vague, apparently unaware of millions of dollars worth of research that does just this.
Actually he has a point. Bloomberg spends MILLIONS OF OUR MONEY IN NO BID CONTRACTs FOR RESEARCH and there is no transparency what these research has shown and how it helped.
When you trade stock, the best source of information on a company is the worker. Ask the worker on the Oil Field or on the Soy Field and you will have the best information than analytical reports.
I guess the two candidates should have spoken about the weather instead... Bloomberg is all powerful and to question him is heresy. Just look around see whose ads are plastered here.
The term limits is the only reason I wouldn't vote for Blooms.
with all of the bloomberg ad's here it looks like gothamist has become bloomberg's "bitch".
any mention of the bloomberg campaign constantly calling you from the cell phone numbers 917-000-0000 and 917-111-1111????
"Not A Chance Dance" on NY1
When has any subway station been named for anybody? Please do not respond with someone who has a street, landmark or neighborhood named for them. Why is this even on the table?
