Staten Island Little Leaguers Eliminated

2009_08_silittleleague.jpg The South Shore National squad of Staten Island went down to Williamsport and certainly put up a fight in the World Series tournament, but in the end couldn't get the job done against San Antonio in a 4-1 defeat in last night's nationally televised game. Most little league double plays are prompted by careless baserunning by a kid who doesn't know how many outs there are, but San Antonio pulled off three DPs last night simply with their sharp fundamentals. The Texas tweens, who probably get to play all-year round without any real winter to deal with, were able to get themselves out of three separate innings in which South Shore National had loaded up the bases, twice with nobody out. Star lefty pitcher Angelo Navetta (pictured) got banged up and taken out early, not making it out of the 2nd inning. Manager Mike Zaccariello said after, "He just wasn't Angelo." Mayor Bloomberg saluted the Staten Island youngsters, saying he was "impressed by the spirit of the players and the devotion of the parents in the stands." After the defeat, the mayor said, "On behalf of the entire city, I congratulate them on a great season that is the stuff of dreams."

The Texas tweens play in a state that is conducive for baseball. NY may have the Yankees, but most ball players are made in Cali, Texas, or Florida.

Jeter, of course, is an exception having grown up in Michigan. But with both parents coaching him, weather be damned.

For S.I. to make it that far is commendable.

"On behalf of the entire city, I want to thank you for letting us all down and ruining our entire year"

While it's exciting for these kids to have their games shown on ESPN, it's so sad when they show the losing team. So much pressure!

And new legion of parents living vicariously through their children is born.

eh, but those double plays were nice to watch.

You can't stay up all night playing video games and drinking beer while you are away from home and expect to play competitively and win.

The team needed a Danny Almonte.

Oops I thought this was about the Mets. Sorry SI.

The Texas team was good.

By the way, did you see the size of the Texas first baseman. He was a giant!

There was a kid that played for the Greenwich Village Little League about six years ago that was 6'2" weighing well up in the area of 180 pounds and he was 12 years old.

Go figure.

The Mets are a "Frenchy stubs his toe" away from starting these kids.

The best part of these Little League World Series is to see the losing team's expression. "Rub some dirt on it and run it off scrubs. Hotties don't like losers. Get over it."
