Photographer Brings 21st Century Nudity to the Met

phpEh7vYOAM.jpg Not too long ago there was some pole dancing for arts sake on the L train. Well, yesterday photographer Zach Hyman (he's like the one-model-at-a-time version of Spencer Tunick) brought his nude subject to a museum. Surprisingly, it seems the MTA is cooler with the naked human form than the Met is!

The 26-year-old model, Kathleen Neill, was busted when she stripped down in the Arms and Armour exhibit. This was the first time one of his models was arrested for public lewdness, according to the NY Post; Hyman told the paper, "Everything was going perfect until the very end. Then it became a worst-case scenario." The session was quick, and allegedly many didn't even see what was happening. One Canadian tourist said, "I thought it was cool to juxtapose the nude woman with the art in the room. I was surprised by how many people didn't even notice her."

The museum hasn't made an official comment, but when the security guard nabbed Neill, the model asked her why it was wrong in a building full of nudity. The guard told her, "Those statues are 400 years old. You're from the 21st century." For those who want to see some more skin, here's some (blurred out) video, conveniently captured because it "was captured exclusively by a camera rolling for NBCNewYork."

More of Hyman's work can be seen on his website. We suggest he bring his next subject to strip down on the High Line, and give those exhibitionists at the Standard something to look at.

here is a link to what i suspect is the movie he saw that inspired him to do the same

    http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Naked_World/70022301?prid=675162206&trkid=217222&lstid=222622

thanks Spencer Tunick it alway good to inspire young photographers its so hard to find direct these days just go with what works that what i always say

  • Malcolm Boura

Attitudes have consequences and it is long overdue that adults stopped hiding behind a smokescreen of concern for children and young people. It is those same children and young people who suffer most of the consequences.

The international comparisons are very clear. More prudish gives worse outcomes. Compare the USA, probably the most prudish western country, with the most liberal European countries. Teenagers sexually active nearly a year younger, less likely to use contraception or condom and more likely to be promiscuous. The results are not surprising. Several times more likely to have an abortion, about ten time more likely to become pregnant and about seventy times more likely to catch gonorrhea. That pattern repeats across the western world. The consequences of prudery are widespread and often serious.

There is no evidence that nudity causes harm to anyone but overwhelming evidence that body-shame causes widespread and ofter serious harm. Are adult prejudices really worth the life of even one child or young person?

  • marzipan

those countries have comprehensive sex education. an idiot taking pictures of nude women in public is not going to enlighten people about healthy attitudes toward sex.

  • ides_of_march

'There is no evidence that nudity causes harm to anyone..."

Baloney. There are plenty of flabby, wrinkly, obese slobs that if any sane person had to look at naked would cause great psychological damage. Ok, you can go back to fornicating on the street corner now.

  • ides_of_march

Where did she clip that round little metal badge with the Met logo on it?

If this guy wanted to be really cutting edge, he should parade a nude woman around the Met when they have an Islamic art exhibit.

  • butterbutter

If the photographer was nude and the model clothed, Now THAT would be interesting and ground breaking.

This is just more of the same as it ever was stuff.

  • NannyState

    Not ground breaking, wind breaking.

  • wow 14th street

I like the photog. in the 1970's who put

up real life phony cockroaches on the walls

of our museums as well as phony light switches.

He was caught and gee, got no publicity.

A.D.Coleman (the old photo critic) has documented this

artist in one of his collected essay books of writings

from the Village Voice or NYT.

It was this photographer's was to protest not getting

his work into the museum's collection by the usual

    "who you know" channels.

This nude stuff is more for entertainment that

    fine arts,but who cares anymore?

Naked women always sell in the marketplace.

  • militza

'Naked women always sell in the marketplace.'

that's cause the female form is a million times better to look at then the male form.

  • marzipan

wrong. so wrong. michelangelo's david is a fine work of art and as far as a form from the "21 century", well, i thank my lucky stars for ewan macgregor and a whole slew of european actors!

  • militza

in no way am I doubting the attractiveness of the male form, I'm just pointing out that I find the female form a bit more pleasing. yes, I did like Ewan MacGregor in "The Pillow Book."

regarding Michelangelo's body, it's a little too perfect for me, we are all flawed creatures and the body is no exception.

  • butterbutter

These were the rules when I was going to Art School:

If you're work uninteresting to look at, Make it BIGGER.

If you're work was conceptually weak, Make it CONTROVERSIAL.

I believe this guy took some art school lessons.

  • Clarice City

    Agreed. Thank you!

  • dr zippy

How is it that WNBC just happened to be there and have their cameras rolling when the photoshoot occurred? What a lucky coincidence for them!

Also, since they aren't bound by FCC restrictions online why is the nude model blurred out in the video?

  • shovel

Why is he getting so much attention? Spencer Tunick has been doing this for a long time, with far more interesting subjects.

  • lagomorph

And plenty of nameless photographers have been taking pictures of women lifting their skirts and dropping their tops for years in public places.

I guess since they didn't use an expensive camera they're not artists.

  • sexisicilian

No nudity in the US but graphic violence, rape & murder on TV; the more the merrier for everyone to watch, what a crock of shit!!

  • infotron1000

Please get Zach Hyman to photograph your catfight.

  • marzipan

there is plenty of nudity in the US--what are you talking about? walk by any magazine newstand, turn on HBO...

  • EricRoberts

You see his point though, right? Nudity and sex are faux-taboo subjects while violence is glorified. It will be interesting when the kids who are sexting rule the world.

  • sexisicilian

Her point (I am a woman) thanx you got my point: In Sicily we see nudity & sex as pure & not "dirty" like here in the US, but my point was that no one cares when there is violence, etc. on TV while children are watching...

  • marzipan

and my point is that it's simplistic to say that americans see sex and nudity as 'dirty'. the context of nudity here usually very sexist. the whole "a woman's breasts are offensive but guns are ok" argument is just so tired and played out. how about some penises on display for my enjoyment?

  • sexisicilian

Ha! Gay men would agree with you but honey this is a sexist world we live in so get used to it:)

  • marzipan

it's a sexist world, yes, but it's sad that you feel that we need to accept it. isn't there a law in italy that states that if a woman is wearing jeans when she's raped that she must have consented since it's impossible for a rapist to get jeans off? if that's how it goes in italy, then i see how you would simply acquiesce to unfair treatment toward the sexes...

  • sexisicilian

I can accept anything I want. As for the law in Italy, or any other country, I do not condone violence against women at all. My comments have nothing to do with rape we are dicussing nudity, so maybe you need more dick honey. And one more thing, Sicily has its own government ... the lovely island I am from is not attached to the boot which is Italy so go & look at a globe know it all:)

  • marzipan

"...maybe you need more dick honey"

keeping it classy, one sicilian at a time.

  • sexisicilian

yeah "how about some penises on display for my enjoyment?" that's classier. At least I do not have to ask to see more dick:)

  • marzipan

personally, i think sniffing some glue is more fun/intellectual than trying to have an exchange of thoughts with you. feel free to sit around in that sexist utopia in your mind.

  • sexisicilian

But your still reading sado ... I guess your not that fun nor intellectual wow so go sniff your glue; I have class & do not be jealous of Sexi Sicilians who tell it like it is!! Sending much luv :)

  • Mookie Wilson

Please god let him be filming a remake of Mannequin!

  • NannyState

Not only should the Met allow this kind of display, but they should serve coctails too.

  • Guest

it happening was performance art the Met should've harnessed.

  • JenChungsBaby

Most of the people who witnessed it in the museum were probably tourists, which may be why everyone played it so cool. I'll credit the photographer though for coming up with a hotter model than that one on the train.

  • nicemarmot

It does amuse me how prudish most Americans are. Oh no, a naked lady! My eyes, they're burning!

  • NobleSavage

To nicemarmot and jaems33: And you know the only thing more tiresome than American prudishness? Non-American (specifically European) sanctimoniousness and condesension towards American prudery (the more correct term)! I mean really -- like the same thing would not have occurred at the Louvre or the Prado???

  • hotstepper

not art, but public nudity is always fun.

  • Guest

    agreed!

  • yack

Oh jesus who cares. Stop giving this guy undeserved attention. Any idiot with a camera and a struggling model can take bad photos in public places.

  • Peter

I'll bet the model is shaved. Blecch!

  • Actually they weren't.
  • Rocknrope

"Those statues are 400 years old. You're from the 21st century."

Nice, a security guard with a quick wit - something you don't see every day.

  • chris

I'm glad to see this Hyman busted. His work is rather crap.

  • Guest

no more joke making for you.

  • Clarice City

It's prosaic. Did he not take a class in 20th Century art history yet? as he never heard of Yves Klein, Marina Abromovic, or Vito Acconci to name just a few? And they were brave enough to take their own clothes off.

  • Dirk

Agreed. I just looked at his website and nothing on it is great.

  • tolu1973

So, if you liked his work, then you wouldn't want to see him arrested. Hey, if were throwing around comparisons to Nazis these days, then you get the golden swastika. Shit for brains for the both of you.

I'm not a big fan of his work, but there is room for it in the art world. And if you haven't noticed, Gothamist is chock full of people that aren't necessarily worthy of attention.

  • Dirk

I should have been clearer... I was agreeing with the "His work is rather crap" part not his getting arrested.

But thanks for bringing in Nazis. That's not over the top or anything....

  • marzipan

hey, not being totally jazzed about public nudity thrust in your face is not the same as genocide and white supremecy... isn't bringing nazi comparisons into the mix a bit bombastic?

  • jibbly

That was way too soon for Godwin to make an appearance.

  • jaems33

    Prudish Americans.

  • marzipan

trust me, if there were as many naked men as there were naked women, no one would be balking at this. the worst part is that about 85% of the nude works at the met are of women, but only 3% of the artists are women. i file all of this under 'balls'. it sucks.
