Fatal Car Crash On Brooklyn Bridge; Inbound Lanes Closed

2009_08_bridgeb.jpg A driver was killed in an accident on the Brooklyn Bridge earlier this morning. According to WCBS 2, "New York City police say the man was driving toward Manhattan when his car collided with a city Department of Transportation dump truck... Police say the truck was equipped with an arrow on top of its cab alerting drivers to work crews on the bridge. It wasn't immediately clear whether the truck was moving or parked during the crash." The driver was pronounced dead at the hospital. Currently, the inbound lanes and the ramp from the eastbound Brooklyn Queens Expressway to the bridge are closed.

Very sad. I predict that any update is going to say something about the driver on his/her cell phone.

Yea, short of this guy having either a stroke or a heart attack his attention was probably elsewhere, ie, texting or on his cell. I mean how do you not notice a dump truck in front of you.

If the dump truck hadn't been there, the retard driver probably would have plowed straight through the work crew for an even greater tragedy. You don't think they put the dump truck there because there's a ton of earth on the bridge to dump, or move, do you?

Wow, you really sound like you know what you're talking about.

Those bridges are freakin' dangerous. The lanes are narrow, there is no shoulder, and absolutely zero speed enforcement. They should have double yellow lines and speed cameras along the whole stretch.

It's a testament to just how good we are at the roadway psychosis we call driving in this city that there's not a death over the East River every day.

zero speed enforcement.

Is it my imagination, or do cabbies maniacally speed up and become more aggressive on bridges?

1010WINS said the Brooklyn Bridge reopened at about 7:00 this morning. I was listening the traffic report as I was driving up West Street at the moment they announced it.

Clearly the problem is neither the dump truck or the driver-- it's these god damn bridges!

In my experience, those trucks with the blinking arrows on top drive fuckin' crazy (esp those arrow trucks that are part of pothole repair crews). It's not known whether the truck was moving or parked. If it was moving, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the reason for the crash.

FOR THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE NASTY COMMENTS ABOUT THE DRIVER OF THE CAR THEY CAN ALL SHUT UP! ITS FUNNY HOW POEPLE WANT TO PLAY THE BLAME GAME WHEN THEY DONT EVEN KNOW THE WHOLE STORY.....FORGET THAT FACT THAT A MAN'S LIFE WAS LOST AND HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS ARE GREIVING BUT NOW WHHEN THEY GO TO READ ABOUT HIM THEY SEE THE CRAZY ACCUSATIONS THAT PEOPLE ARE MAKING. IF YOU DONT KNOW THE WHOLE STORY THEN I WHOULD LIKE TO SUGGEST THAT YOU KEEP UR MOUTH SHUT!

May Jah provide the family and friends peace and comfort as we all mourn the loss of a amn taken too soon. A horrific accident took his life and speculation/blame will not bring back a son, father, uncle, brother and friend. Please think of others before u post negative comments...Jah's peace, love, guidance and blessings to all.

You are so correct in ur post. People can be very cruel and uncaring! A man lost his life. He left behind many who love him and will mourn his passing. I question "humanity" when people can read and see photos of the accident and all they can do is write such negative comments. I pray they never have to endure a sudden, tragic loss...Peace asnd Jah's Guidance to all that knew and loved him. He will be missed.
