Tonight, on ESPN's 7 p.m. E60 program, former Giants star Plaxico Burress talks publicly about his decision to take a plea deal after accidentally shooting himself in the leg with an unregistered gun at a Manhattan nightclub last November. The deal will send him to prison for two years. Burress says that the security at Midtown's Latin Quarter nightclub knew he was carrying a gun but waved in him in anyway, "It wasn't like I was trying to hide it." He also says, "Like I said, I got myself into a situation and, you know, I gotta deal with the consequences for it."
Burress was heading to a VIP room when he missed a step and the gun fell down his jeans (not sweatpants). He wanted to stop it from falling to the ground, so he grabbed it—and ended up pulling the trigger, "My finger hit, like, right on the trigger. What are the odds on that happening?" And then he noticed, "I take two or three steps and like my pants are wet. I had some Chuck Taylor's (Converse sneakers) and I looked down and the top of my shoe is red," realizing he was shot. Then he told his club buddy—teammate Antonio Pierce—that he needed to go to the hospital, "And he was like 'Why?' I said I just think I shot myself, and he was like 'Noooo!"
Schaap asked Burress why he didn't have the gun in a holster and Burress said, "Bad judgment." (It's unclear if Schaap asks Burress why he was packing that night.) And NFL Commission Roger Goodell says that Burress must serve his sentence before playing on any other NFL team.

He's going to jail because of his status and skin color. Only 14% of people who illegally carry a firearm in the city do any time. Bloomberg is simply a racist and an opportunist for pushing this, knowing the verdict will appeal to all the middle class and wealthy law and order types who think following the rules is for everyone else.

So he was wearing sweatpants (with a gun in the waistband, as if he were some street thug) and Chucks to a fancy nightclub? Quit posturing Plax, you're a multi-millionaire. Ridiculous.

The guy is an idiot, but 2 years is way to harsh for shooting yourself in the leg.
I admire Bloomberg's anti-gun crusade, but Plaxico shouldn't have been the fall man. (and I hate the Giants, so I could care less if he plays or not).

He wasn't charged with shooting himself in the leg. That he did that was irrelevant, except that it was how he caught because it provided evidence that committed a felony for which anyone would be sent to prison.
Of course as a celebrity he wouldn't be subjected to a stop and frisk like anyone might be. He had to something really stupid in order for law enforcement to know he was carrying.
There were signs everywhere in the subways a few months ago to the effect that if you carry a gun it's 3 1/2 years "no excuses." Plenty of people have been sentenced under that new law, some like Plaxico being allowed to plead to a lesser felony. Those have have been charged would have been if they'd accidentally shot themselves or not. He's not a fall man, he's yet another felon.

So a draconian law is something we should just accept?
jaycjay
No, treating celebrities the same as everyone else is something we should accept. Whether the law is draconian is a different question, but going easier on him than on others wouldn't change that.

We as a body can certainly agree on this: Plaxico Buress is undoubtably an extremely funny-looking man.

And the fact that the club knew he had a gun is significant how???
And can we present Roger Goodell the Captain Obvious Award right now?

"Like I said, I got myself into a situation and, you know, I gotta deal with the consequences for it."
Amen. It's nice seeing him taking responsibility for his situation and suggesting that the consequences for his stupidity are fair and reasonable. This guy will always be known as a jackass who did something extremely dumb and dangerous, but it seems like he's not too bad of a guy after all.
jaycjay
"but it seems like he's not too bad of a guy after all."
If you're going to dismiss all the times he's acted like jackass because once after being caught he said the right thing in the hope of someday salvaging his lucrative career... OK.

Is he really this stupid? It's irrelevant whether the club knew about it or not. He didn't have a valid NYS permit for the gun. That's the only thing that matters in the criminal case.

I'm not familiar with Glocks, but isn't it unwise to keep a round chambered like that?
jaycjay
Common thinking among most people who carry a handgun professionally is that you always have a round chambered. You shouldn't be carrying a gun if you're not prepared to use it, and if the time comes you may not have time and a free hand to chamber a round.
But then, you'd never find an experienced and trained handgun user sticking the gun in their waistband. That's where Burress created a dangerous situation, if the gun had been in a holster this wouldn't have happened.
There are three safety mechanisms in the Glock 22, but all controlled via a small lever on the trigger. The idea is simple: finger on the trigger, the gun can fire. Finger off the trigger, it can't.
But when he was fumbling for it in his pants, he grabbed the trigger. Actually if he'd just let if fall to the ground, he'd have had no problem -- the drop safety would have prevented discharge.

That security at the club knew he was armed and let him in anyway isn't news. It was reported immediately after the incident, for example in this story dated December 2:
If Burress' claim that security at the club knew about the gun, I sincerely hope that they have all been fired. Idiots.

He got hosed. 24 mos was way too long. It was Bloomie making an example of him.

I dont know all the details, but it sounds like he buried himself. He should have lost the gun, showed up in the ER with his lawyer and just stonewalled the questions. It looks bad, but its not against the law to get shot, and it beats jail. Ultimately. I think he more or less snitched HIMSELF.
jaycjay
Your right, you don't know all the details, because that's basically what he tried to do. A security guy put the gun in Burress' SUV, and Antonio Pierce drove it to Jersey and dropped it off at Burress' house.
Burress went to the hospital, and checked in under a false name. The hospital didn't notify police, clearly at his request as they're required to immediately report gunshot wounds.
Obviously the intent of everyone involved was to cover it up, but someone at the club called police and told them what happened and that it was Burress. The canvassed hospitals and found him.
jaycjay
Minor correction: the gun was placed and taken to New Jersey in Pierce's SUV, not Burress'.
