Over the weekend, Paterson got an earful about the comments from editorial columnists, a NY1 host, the radio host he made the comments to, a state senator and even officials from the Obama administration. Today the News talks to a top labor official who tells the paper, "Most people in New York realize that it's over for him at the end of this term and it's based on accomplishments, not based on the color of his skin."
The Paterson remarks have created such a stir that there's even a case of backlash against the backlash, specifically the comments made by Staten Island State Senator Diane Savino. When discussing the governor's capabilities and limitations, Savino told the Advance:
"We live in a digital age now, with e-mailing and Blackberrying. He is not able to do that because of his visual impairment. David cannot do those things. Also, he does not read Braille. He has people reading newspapers to him. He listens to tapes of staffers briefing him. All that takes an enormous amount of time. As a result, he is not able to respond on the fly the way [former Gov. Eliot] Spitzer or even [former Gov. George] Pataki could. In some ways I think that has hindered him, in spite of everything he has accomplished in life."Paterson aide Larry Schwartz called those comments "insensitive and totally inappropriate" and said "Diane Savino owes a public apology to Gov. Paterson ... [and] every visually impaired New Yorker." Savino said she apologizes if she "inadvertently hurt anyone's feelings."
The only person who seems to be attempting to mend fences in the aftermath of Paterson's remarks is the Reverend Al Sharpton, who is using brouhaha as a potential opportunity for another Brew Haha, or Suds Summit Lite perhaps. Referring to the governor's specific callout of New York Post columnist Fred Dicker, Sharpton said to the Post, "I think they all should sit down and talk. Maybe I'll take the governor and reporter for a beer."

So basically always overlook those with disabilities because of their impairments might hinder their performance? Because that is exactly what Diane Savino is saying. She may be somewhat accurate but that is not the message we should send to those who are disabled.
She can go to hell.
I think Diane is saying a visually impaired person is not capable of doing the Governor's job. I did not read anywhere that she states it should be overlooked. However, I disagree with her. I believe Paterson's intelligence is at fault with his performance. He couldn't even pass the bar exam.
I believe Paterson's UNintelligence is at fault with his performance. He couldn't even pass the bar exam.
maybe if the man learned how to read braille like a normal blind person, instead of having everything read aloud to him...a blind person can totally be governor, just not this blind person.
This man couldn't pass the Bar Exam. Paterson is ineffective and in my opinion STUPID. I don't think his sight impairment as much as his stupidity is at fault for his poor tenure. I lost all respect for Paterson after he align himself with King Bloomberg on mayoral control and now both opposed to public reform.

That vacation we were enjoying from Al Sharpton sure was sweet. I guess we're back to enduring his pathetic (and sometimes criminal) attempts at relevance.
Has Al Sharpton straightened out his tax issues yet?
i take issue with the issue of people taking issue with my issues.
Beer: the solution to all our political problems!
If Eliot had kept his secrets secret, he'd be taking every bit as much heat as Paterson has in this downturn, if not more.
If you ask any blind person who has their shit together about Paterson and you'll be told that the man coasted through life on the back of his family's laurels.
He does not read braille, he has never taken advantage of technology (screen readers) which make computers and smart-phones accessible to the visually impaired. His disability is not that of lack sight, but laziness. A lifetime of personal aides and gophers have left this man intellectually lazy.
Paterson's been an ineffective governor from day one. It has nothing to do with his race.
So -- visual impairment or incompetence? For the gov, I'd plead the former and head for the exit.
