Last Night's Action: Laying the Hammer Down

  • Yankees 8, Red Sox 4: Five home runs off Josh Beckett powered the Yankees to a win in this rubber game. They reclaimed a 7 1/2-game lead in the American League East. CC Sabathia pitched 6 2/3 innings, striking out eight and walking none. If not for some shaky defense, his four-run (three earned) line would have looked a lot better. For the second time in three nights, Hideki Matsui went deep twice. Apparently he likes the long ball more than countryman Ichiro Suzuki.

  • Phillies 9, Mets 7: Another Mets loss, another crazy way for it to happen. After pulling to within two and getting the potential winning run to the plate, the Mets sent the runners and saw Jeff Francoeur hit into an unassisted triple play. That's the second time in Major League history such a sequence ended a game, and the first since 1927. The late-game action almost overshadowed Pedro Martinez's return -- the righty got cheered -- or Oliver Perez's latest debacle -- the lefty got pulled midcount after giving up six runs and getting just two outs in the first inning. The teams finish a four-game series Monday in a matinee. The Mets are now 10 games under .500.
  • Red Bulls 3, FC Dallas 2: Red Bulls win! Red Bulls win! Juan Pablo Angel scored twice, including with two minutes remaining. Richie Williams, the interim head coach, got a win in his debut. Maybe the coach was the whole problem.

I believe that's Murphy being tagged out for the 3rd unassisted out. Frenchy had lined to second for the first out.

What happened to covering the NY Penn League this year? No Staten Island Yankees or Brooklyn Cyclones this whole summer unlike 2008 when Gothamist did covered both teams.

They cover the Mets, how many minor league teams do you need to read about?

Speaking of the NY-Penn league, I wonder how the Mets would fare against the Mahoning Valley (Pa) Scrappers, in the Pinckney Division. They have 40 win, 22 lost record. The winner plays the Lowell, Massachusetts Spinners (I believe they are part of the Bosox farm system) who lead the Stedler division.

Los Mets: always finding new and interesting ways to lose.

The Mets' baserunning blunders have cost them a few games already. These are basic fundamentals that they just can't seem to grasp. Coupled with abysmal pitching, they are a disaster. I am tired of excuses for disabled key players. Even with them in the lineup they have choked and missed the playoffs. Why is it that an organization like the Atlanta Braves seems to be in contention every single year? They have an excellent management team-unlike Los Mets. If the Wilpons actually gave a shit they would fire Minaya and Manuel already. Instead they give them a vote of confidence... Pathetic

Really this wasn't that bad a blunder, and it could be argued that it wasn't one at all. It was an aggressive offensive call, which for a team in a near-hopeless position in the standings isn't necessarily a bad move.

Sending the runners with nobody out, if that ball had ended up practically anywhere else in the infield, would have meant two in scoring position with one out, down by 2 runs -- maybe even loaded the bases, or even a run scored.

Straight up the middle was the wrong place for the ball, because once the runners broke Bruntly himself had to break for second. So you can say that play happened because the runners were going, or you can say it happened because of where the ball headed. In fact, both things had to happen. What you actually want there is for the hitter to be able to hit behind the runners, but that's always easier said than done.
