On Friday, a Sun County flight to Minnesota from JFK Airport—usually a 2 1/2 hour journey—was stuck on the tarmac for six hours before take off—and now Senator Chuck Schumer and NY State Assemblyman Michael Gianaris want the U.S. government to pass the passenger bill of rights. Reports say that the flight was supposed to take off at 11 a.m., but boarding only started at noon and it didn't take off until 6 p.m.: "Sun County chief executive Stan Gadek said in a statement the airline regretted the delay and would issue refunds. Adding to the frustration, passengers said the flight crew brought out the food cart after three hours, but passengers had to pay for the items." One passenger said, "I was sitting in the 17th row, and all the food was gone." Earlier this month, a Continental Express flight sat on a Rochester, Minnesota tarmac for almost six hours—and overnight (it "smelled like diapers. It had no food and a full toilet")—prompting a Department of Transportation investigation.

I don't understand why nobody turned on their cell phone and called 9-1-1 ? Being held like that is against quite a few laws.
Being in a plane is like being in jail. Why did it take so long for the plane to take off? Why did they board the plane to begin with? Once again common sense fails.
Airlines have their own rules and the last beneficiary will be the public. They airlines hold the public in contempt and do everything to dis them.
Most people tend to be weak and intimidated of authority. Bust as Atomische says, there should have been at least one person that after two hour should have had the will to cal 9-1-1. You can claim that you see someone having a heart/panic/anxiety attack or whatever else and once the cops arrive the airline has no choice but to deplane the passengers.
If every time this happened someone called 9-1-1, the airlines would have second thoughts about waiting on the tarmac for more than an hour.
only america does shit like this happen.
"...Senator Chuck Schumer and NY State Assemblyman Michael Gianaris want the U.S. government to pass the passenger bill of rights."
Can we pass this bill already.
Continental pulled this shit on me years ago in Omaha. I loathe flying.
Seriously, is this a big story? I had the same thing happen to me three weeks ago. 1/2 hour out of Laguardia, we were turned away due to thunderstorms. After circling for an hour, we landed in PA at 3:30, got back on the plane at 4:30 after getting food, and didn't fly out until 9:30. Both my cell phone and my ipod ran out of juice during the wait.
We boarded the plane at 4:30 because we were told that they got the go-ahead to take off, but then another storm would roll in, and it was back and forth like that for the next 5 hours. The capper is that we were told that because it wasn't the airlines fault but Mother Nature's, that we would have to pay for a hotel ourselves if we were eventually de-planed again.
My friend was on a flight last week, sitting on the plane for 5 hrs with no a/c, and it hadn't even left the gate. The plane was losing repeatedly losing power on top of the storms rolling through. Several passengers left the flight, which added more delays in getting their bags off. I don't blame them, the plane was headed to russia so not like it was going to get better.
I waited 4 hours taxiing at La Guardia one time, missed my connection in Atlanta and was forced to spend the night on the floor in an empty terminal. I was flatly denied by Delta for any kind of hotel room or taxi service reimbursement. The airlines JUST DON'T CARE. Especially the big ones.
Delta went from being the #1 airline to becoming a horror show.
Just call 911 and say terrorists hijacked the plane (remember, you can't trust ANYTHING the pilot says, because he probably has a knife to his throat by an arab). You'll be off the plane in at most 45 mins, you might see flash grenades and M16 rifles. You'll be the star of the show when you get off the plane, front page of the post and news.

This is why flying with a toddler is such a crap shoot. When we fly we pack 24 hours worth of meals, clothes, snacks, books, etc. just in case something like this happens.
It took me 13-1/2 hours to get from Las Vegas to Laguardia two weeks ago on SouthWest, and that wasn't a news story. We had to pick up mechanics in Chicago, then we lost our slot, then Laguardia made us circle, then we ran out of gas and had to go to Pittsburgh. I let Vegas at 7:30 and got to NYC around midnight. And that wasn't a news story! SouthWest was great, tho. Actually let us off the plane in Pittsburgh and gave us pizza! And gave us a voucher. And we had David the hip hop flight attendant.
Much better than US Air who, a few years ago, decided to re-route a NYC plane to Elmira and didn't have any planes going to NYC for two days. Or any food. It's a 7 hour drive from Elmira. And it was after midnight. I think we ran over some possum. :( Thank god that was a business trip, so the rental car was covered by my job.
Quit it with the inflammatory yellow journalism Gothamist. The airline reps have ALREADY TOLD YOU that this type of incident is EXTREMELY RARE, so there's no need for a passenger bill of rights. the fact that it's happened twice in the last month, and seemingly happens about 8-9 times every year, is just a streak of BAD LUCK.
I'd call 911. 6 hours trapped on tarmac... that sounds like something is very much afoul. I'd want to see some security on the plane confirming the pilots are who they say they are.
There was a great story in the Wall Street Journal a few years ago about a Northwest passenger stuck in a plane for 8 hours. The woman found the name of the company's CEO in the airline magazine, called information on her cell and got his number, and then called him at home and told him what was going on.
It's Sun COUNTRY Airlines, not Sun COUNTY Airlines!!!
