Around 4:30 a.m. today, a shooting broke out on Avenue A and East 13th Street—a total of three men were shot, and one was killed. According to 1010 WINS, "All three of the unidentified men were rushed to Bellevue Hospital where one of them was pronounced dead. The other two were listed in stable condition." It's unclear what caused the shooting, which occurred just south of Stuyvesant Town, and the investigation is ongoing. 1010WINS adds that East Village residents told "reporter Glenn Schuck, that they are upset the bars and clubs in the area stay open so late." Update: The Daily News reports that the shooting occurred outside the bar Forbidden City and that the bouncer was killed after throwing two men out: "The men, who continued to fight with another group as they exited the night spot, hopped into a waiting white van and one of them reemerged a moment later brandishing a handgun, horrified witnesses said." One witness elaborated that a man got out of the vehicle and "popped one guy. He then walked around another car, went straight up to [the bouncer] and capped him point blank in the forehead."

Residents are unhappy that bars in the - EAST VILLAGE - stay open so late?
I know I would be!
I don't care how hip and happening the area is some of us need our sleep!. heehee.
the complainers should just move, I mean it's not like the place is gonna get more quiet in the future.
I guess the hip just turned into hood.
I stopped by Destination, across the street, at about 3am after leaving Williamsberg (which was rocking) and was surprised how quiet it was (2 couples, the bartender and bouncer by my count).
wow east village is so ghetto... why would anyone want to move there?
Oh wow, I live at A & 10th. This is pretty awful. I love this neighborhood and I love living here, and I don't even mind the bar scene people so terribly much, I just don't know what possesses people to just start fighting on the street and shooting bouncers and whatnot. Everyone, behave yourselves -- or at least within earshot of my apartment, because if I hear or see anything going down I am calling the cops on you, no question.
Good luck getting the 9th to answer the phone.
I actually called them on an assault that was happening pretty much right in front of my building several months ago. They actually showed up in what must have been under 2 minutes and managed to defuse the situation and calm everyone down and just handled the whole thing in a very friendly and professional way, I was pretty impressed. You know, for what that's worth.
You got lucky.
Maybe my neighbors will finally get the sticks out of their collective asses and realize that there are much bigger problems than a couple of noisy bars in the East Village.
Probably not, though. They'll just use this as excuse to try to close every bar and restaurant in the neighborhood.
What are the bigger problems?
this is a tragedy no matter what the neighborhood. the fact that it is in the east village with a high percentage of bars and nightlife makes it no less so. there are residents who live here and patrons who enjoy the bars and both need to live in harmony. a bouncer getting killed for doing his job is beyond tragic. my sympathies to his family and loved ones.
I live in the east village and have for the last 10 years. I don't think it would be bad to have the bars close a bit earlier although I understand that is a bit of blasphemy too, nor for people to be more aware of the dangers - especially at that time of night when things in general are quieting down and the streets more deserted. this particular case isn't about noise complaints - it's about the dangers of mixing too much "fun" with armed weapons.
when people are killed doing their jobs, it seems extra sad and unnecessary. I don't think it's an excuse to close bars and restaurants, but I think it is worth discussing to see what, if anything, can be done to help prevent this kind of tragic end to a night.
Hey, by the way, is this the first homicide of the year over here? I remember hearing about a couple of other shootings, but I didn't think anyone had died yet :/
I'll bet what's left of my boots that if these guys were stoned (instead of drunk) that this would not have happened. This kind of insanity doesn't happen on such a regular basis in the mellow city of Amsterdam. Ask any cop that you know, "when was the last time that you had a physical altercation with a stoner?" Then ask them, "when was the last time that you had a physical altercation with a drunk?" Watch them check their watch before answering.
Forget the gun issues -- IT'S TIME TO LEGALIZE MARIJUANA!
people will still get drunk though.
somebody actually "liked" this article?
walked past forbidden city a couple hours ago. fox news was there interviewing some people. really sad site. there was still blood on the sidewalk and a vigil was set up. this is some shiz from the Wire
A man died. A man who was an important and lively figure in the neighborhood . This is not a soapbox for complaining about the sudden burst in nightlife, this is a time for the mourning of an amazing man. His death was senseless and by no means a reflection of anything other than a person or group of persons who clearly lack a soul. Take your complaints to the community board, otherwise have some respect for a father of two who lost his life for no damn good reason.
MMMM. You're right. Somebody fucking died that didn't have to if we didn't have so many guns on the streets. Forget about the hours the places stay open, or that you're in Stuyvesant Town and not Crown Heights (where I live) or any of the other BS posts in here. Somebody fucking died. This doesn't have to happen. What will you do about it?
Criminals will always have guns.
That's why they're criminals.
What are you doing about it?
I love this bar and am shocked by what I just read. what's even more disturbing is the fact that NYC is constantly under surveillance, every corner and yet... the NYPD is yet to make any arrests. I hope that they quickly bring these dumbf*cks to justice and put them away for life.
any description of the shooter?
white van? were they selling speakers?
Not in the news: Just an hour later this other guy got mugged by two robbers around the corner on E 11th St between A and B. Bashed his head in with a cane. Shitty night in this neighborhood.
Two shootings in 24hrs where guys go into their car and bust out the artillery. Memo to the NYPD: don't just write the ticket, search the vehicle.
Hot Damn
who was working the door?
any name??
