Dreamland Rent Dispute, Coney Attraction Shut Down

2009_08_coneyisl.jpg If Thor Equities was hoping to win over public opinion, we're not sure this is the way to go: The developer which owns the land where Dreamland Amusement Park sits (the former Astroland site) has shut down the amusement, claiming non-payment of rent. Thor spokesman Stefan Friedman tells the Post that Dreamland has only paid $30,000—and owes $600,000, "We are hopeful that Dreamland will soon pay its rent, so it can quickly reopen the rides." But Dreamland president Anthony Raffaele told NY1 he has been paying rent, "First of all they came down here, they quadrupled everybody's rent in Coney Island. Nobody in Coney Island can pay their rent now. And now they come down here and cut all the locks. Why'd they wait till now, if I haven't been paying the rent, it's two weeks away from the end of the season." City Councilman Domenic Recchia criticized Thor owner Joseph Sitt as "a heartless person who only cares about money."

Most landlords DO only care about money. Which is why they are money-grubbing landlords. If you've paid it, show the receipts and move on to the courtroom.

What kind of bastard wants to get paid his rent? Seriously, how dare these Thor guys expect their contractually obligated payment! I mean, they GOT .5% of their money, isn't that enough!

I agree that people have to pay rent if they want to stay. If the landlord quadrupled it, that's pretty much the same as saying that you don't want the tenant around -- it may as well be an eviction. But, hey, it's his land, he can do with it what he wants.

But have they decided what they're going to do with Coney Island once everything there closes? It looks to me like pretty soon there won't be anything except aggressive panhandlers and some massive Russian women.

Its Moscow on the Bay. If your net worth isn't atleast 8 digits, security will break you kneecaps.

Guess I don't need to go down there this summer. Sad.

You and everyone else does need to come out to Coney this summer to help keep the the mom & pops and longtime amusement operators alive and thriving!

The headlines and news stories about the Dreamland lockdown is worse publicity than the closing itself. People read it and think, oh all of Coney Island is closed. We went through this already when Astroland closed.

Coney Island is still open. Without Dreamland, CONEY ISLAND STILL HAS 43 RIDES. Only Dreamland, which had 12 rides and some sideshows is closed. I work in Coney and have actually kept a ride count all summer long.

What's open: Cyclone roller coaster, Deno's Wonder Wheel Park (22 rides), McCullough's Kiddie Park (12 rides), Eldorado Bumper Cars, Coney Island Boom A Ring Circus, CIUSA's sideshow & Burlesque, Coney Island Museum, Coney Island History Project, New York Aquarium, Dreamland Roller Rink, Ruby’s Bar, Cha Cha’s, game arcades and more

The deep hatred I have for Bloomberg is equal to how I despise Thor Equities.

SAVE CONEY ISLAND. Before a natural disaster takes it out.

Something is fishy in Coney Island... I find it very hard to believe the reported rent numbers. $600k for carnival rides and an animal show? I don't believe these reported numbers. There has to be something more to this story. Sounds like Sitt is up to his usual amusements don't make money rap...
