Last Night's Action: A Win at Fenway

  • Yankees 20, Red Sox 11: Entering Fenway Park with a 6 1/2-game lead, the Yankees' main goal should have been to avoid a sweep. They did just that by pouring it on against Brad Penny and a host of Red Sox pitchers. Every spot in the order had a hit, an RBI and a run scored, though Johnny Damon left the game after fouling a ball off his knee and striking out. The Yankees will have A.J. Burnett and CC Sabathia the next two days as they try to put even more space between them and their rivals. Believe it or not, this was the Yankees' first win at Fenway this season.
  • Mets 4, Phillies 2: Thanks to a rain delay, this game started an hour and a half late but the Yankees' contest still almost ended after it did. The Mets had two in the third and two in the fourth -- including a solo homer from Jeff Francoeur -- to pull within 13 1/2 games of the Phillies and eight games of .500. Awesome.

    WTF Boston? Come on! WIN!

  • Mr Mel

Now the Mets will become the spoilers, doing to the rest of them what was done to the Mets in the last few seasons.

  • dr zippy

What happened to the Mets the last couple of years had nothing to do with spoilers and everything to do with their own inability to win.

  • Mr Mel

Hey Doc, do you remember a 17 game lead in August?

  • dr zippy

Yes I do and that's my point exactly. The Mets didn't lose a 17 game lead to a spoiler, they lost because they stunk in the last weeks of the season and lost to everyone.

  • Mr Mel

Yeah, I know, there's no such thing as an accident.

    Stay classy, Tom.

You failed to mention that this was against the Phillie's crown jewel, Cole Hamels, or that it was a much better game than the batting practice that you watched, or the Mets role as spoilers, but whatever, you don't know baseball, don't know why you'd start now.
