Kevin Uhrin
"It's like being raped," 50-year-old Kevin Uhrin tells the Daily News, describing how he felt seeing a piece of paper on his apartment door with the word "fags" written on it. Uhrin says the paper, which was taped up to announce some impending repair work and insult him, was part of an ongoing anti-gay campaign by board members at his Kew Gardens Co-Op. He also heard his floor referred to as the "AIDS floor," because three units on the floor were each owned by a gay couple. So Uhrin and another tenant, Estelle Torino, filed a discrimination lawsuit; Uhrin settled out of court for an undisclosed sum, but Torino's case will go to court next month. She says the trouble started when a busted pipe caused a leak in her apartment, and management refused to repair the damage. Tensions escalated, and in the years since, the board has allegedly turned other hetero tenants against their homosexual neighbors. Now Torino is scared to go downstairs to do her laundry alone, but shouldn't she be more worried about finding an offensive note on her door?

What this guy does in the privacy of his apartment with other consenting adults is none of the board's concern, unless of course that's how the pipe got broken in the first place. Now if he walked around the property looking like he does in that picture, I can see why they might not be too thrilled with him. Either way, not fixing the leak because they don't like this guy is stupid as it causes damage to the whole building.
Anyway, shouldn't they have to prove who put the sign on the door before they can assign guilt? Wouldn't be the first hate-crime hoax.
I'm sure he doesn't walk around his building like that, but of course Gothamist has to put up that pic over any other to make the gay man a caricature.
Also, I don't know where in Kew Gardens his building is, but I found certain parts of the neighborhood to be pretty unfriendly to outsiders, and they especially don't like gays, so I don't find this that surprising.
If that's the photo he chooses to use to represent himself on his facebook profile, you can't blame Gothamist. It's not like they had a dozen photos from which to choose.
They didn't have to run a pic of him at all, actually.
"If that's the photo he chooses to use to represent himself on his facebook profile, you can't blame Gothamist. It's not like they had a dozen photos from which to choose."
That's how he chooses to represent himself TO HIS FRIENDS.
And why put his picture at all, seeing as he's the one that has already settled his suit?
"That's how he chooses to represent himself TO HIS FRIENDS."
If he hasn't tweaked privacy settings, it's out there for anyone to see. Gotta be careful!
I feel for the guy, but something tells me that rape victims might object to his categorization of seeing the word "fag" being "like rape."
Yeah a poor choice of words, to be sure, but I think we all know what he's getting at.
As a Kew Gardens resident, I'm saddened by this. Kew Gardens presents many people with one of the few bargains in the city for normal (e.g. cheap) living, and for this reason is attracting many people of diverse backgrounds.
The neighborhood has been traditionally Jewish middle class, and Chasidim and Russians now have a large local presence.
I hope the old guard doesn't use the same hate tactics they left their former countries to avoid.
Damage to the interior of her apt should have been covered by her own coop insurance policy, the building mgmt's insurance only covers the exterior of the apartment.
just because that guy chooses to represent himself as a 12 year old thai prostitute on vacation doesn't mean people can harass him. gay bashing in NYC is like murder anywhere else.
Hey, guess what! It isn't like being raped at all! Sorry about bigotry & stuff, but comparing it to rape is...well, not as bad as when people refer to sequels they don't like as being "raped" but still...come on.
