Last November, Daryush Omar was arrested after crashing his SUV into a livery cab, killing driver Bessy Velasquez and passenger Panayiota Demetriou. He had run a red light at 31st Avenue in Astoria and t-boned the cab; police found his blood alcohol was 0.176, twice the legal limit. Yesterday, Omar, who has been held without bail, pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter, and will face sentencing of 3 1/2 to 10 years next month. Omar, a Long Island resident, was also found to be living in the country illegally and will be deported to Afghanistan after he serves his term. The Post reports that another murder case against Omar—in 2006, he allegedly told friends to beat up a man who simply asked for directions (the man died after being beat with a steel pipe)— was dropped because "two key witnesses vanished."

How did he "get 3 1/2 years" when his sentencing is next month? I hope he does get the maximum 10 years and dies in prison.
fixed
Thanks—adjusted. (The judge had indicated the sentence would be 3.5-10 years.)
Why is this piece of garbage still here? Deport his ass already.
see folks, not only do DWI manslaughter convictions land you in jail, they also get you deported. now which cynic was it that said otherwise?
I was suggesting that they not hold him in prison at all (at the expense of tax payers) and deport him immidiately. Why let this guy stick around?
notice how my 1st comment is not a reply to yours. this was a general statement, to all those who are always complaining that drivers always get off the hook.
Now imagine if he had killed those two people with a gun (albeit "accidentally," just acting reckless like he was with his vehicle). Would 10 years be the max he would face?
Yeah, that title is a bit misleading. Either way he deserves the worst. There's no excuse for this guy.
Why oh why can't we just deport him now instead of wasting tax dollars on him?! So frustrating!
because he would probably be free in his mother country and not serve the sentence imposed by him in USA. I am quite sure he would agree with you as well to be immediately deported instead of jail
hopefully some good old boys will get their hooks into this guy while he's in jail.
amen.
oooh! he looks like a real winner.
3.5 years for killing two people doesn't really sound like justice served to me. Hopefully it will be the full 10 (although that doesn't sound like much either).
I'm sure after a few years in the pen, he'll come out with a renewed love of this country as he goes home to Afghanistan. Or more likely he'll hook up with the Taliban against the "invading oppressors." Two dead people will be the least of his transgressions.
They should airlift him back to his homeland in an unpressurized cargo hold, and then drop him out at about four thousand feet with a concrete block attached to his head to cushion the fall. The block will have a small clay tablet attached to it written in cuneiform telling who he is and his mother's maiden name so when they find him wandering in the desert they will know who he is.
He pleaded guilty without cutting a deal with prosecutors? Is he hoping to get the judge to show him some mercy for doing so?
