Wrong Way Driver, Possibly Drunk, On Garden State Parkway

2009_08_parkway.jpg No matter that the Taconic State Parkway wrong-way crash claimed 8 lives when a minivan driver, apparently drunk and high, slammed into another SUV—driving the wrong way while possibly drunk is still happening. According to the Asbury Park Press, a driver was arrested—authorities believe he was intoxicated—after causing two wrong-way accidents on the Garden State Parkway at 5:20 p.m. yesterday. The driver "was going northbound in the southbound lanes" near Hazlet, NJ. "After striking one car, the wrong-way driver hit a second vehicle in the southbound express lanes before going through the guardrail and down into a ravine. The driver of the second car is pregnant and was being treated for a minor injury."

Give me a break. Stay classy NJ? Just weeks ago a woman killed her family in NY. What does this have anything to do with NJ?

Why don't you form an original thought for once.

Well what do you expect? If the wrong way driver on the Taconic had survived what's the worst she would be charged with, manslaughter? She'd be out in a few years. So why shouldn't people keep driving drunk just as much as they like? There appears to be nothing stopping them.

I'm certainly not defending this kind of behavior, because the thought of it actually terrifies me, but let's not start treating this like a sudden epidemic. The fact is that this sort of thing was happening just as often before the Taconic crash. It was just rare to see such a horrific aftermath. At all hours past lunchtime, we always have a number of drunk drivers in the tri-state area. That's how the yahoos around here learn to drive.

Pass laws that have real bite for drunk driving.

First offense: Loss of driver's license for life.
Driving without a license: Two years in prison.
Second offense for driving withoug a license: Ten years in prison.

You get the idea.

People who drive a vehicle have to be made to understand that it is a responsibility not a right. I know that in this country it is seen as a rite of passage but having fun-fun-fun in daddy's T-Bird is not smart nor safe. Drunk driving is bad all the way around but focusing solely on it takes attention away from the number of selfish drivers that are on the road. For some reason, owning a BMW, Mercedes or Hummer make the drivers of those vehicles feel like the road belongs to them and that everyone should get out of their way so they can drive 30 miles over the speed limit.

There was a time in America when babaies rode in the front seat and cars did not have seatbelts. People had to be convinced through years of public service announcements and even the occational fine that you need "buckle up for safety". People used to think that seatbelts were total bullshit.

Now people think you're crazy if you don't buckle up and we even have features on cars that alert drivers that their seat belt is not buckled. And hey, remember when air bags were a crazy new thing? So why then is it so crazy to install a breathalyzer in a motor vehicle?

You know, despite my libertarian tendencies I have to agree with you. It's like can I please not be killed by drunk assholes who are somehow convinced that they are special and the rules don't apply to them?

Just this weekend I saw two cars drive the wrong way! In the City! Regardless of whether its stupidity or driving under the influence (or both), its a reminder to look both ways before you cross the street.

Drunk drivers should be charged with either attempted murder or murder--- no exceptions.

I also think that the punishment for driving drunk should be much more severe. People may think twice before slobbering out the phrase "no, I'm tolltaly FINE t-to-to drrrive. Giimmme ma keys."
