Just after 5:30 p.m., some scaffolding outside a building at 7th Avenue and 12th Street In Park Slope collapsed. According to City Room, "A worker was killed, and two others were lightly injured, in an accident at an apartment building in Park Slope, Brooklyn, that is undergoing renovation work, the authorities said... The accident occurred at the Ansonia, a former clock factory that has been converted by various developers into residential apartments. The accident occurred at one of the buildings, at 438 12th Street, between Seventh and Eighth Avenues."
A reader who sent us the photograph above said, "The workers have been working on the building for several months and ALWAYS appear to be wearing safety harnesses. - this took place around the 5th floor of the building." And a poster on the Brooklynian messageboard wrote, "I'm on the east side of the block and I can see an entire sectiom of scaffold has collapsed. hanging vertically. anyone on it would have fallen 4 stories into the paved courtyard. terrible," later adding, "it looks like a section of scaffold dropped two stories then split in half. one half appears to have stayed horizontal while the other went vertical."

Ah man. I totally passed right by there just before it happened. That is really sad. It looked like a real professional operation too.
This is a sad affair. As to the safety issue, I walked by this work area a week ago during heavy winds, and wondered why they were still working under these potentially dangerous conditions.
