Double-Dipping Albany Lawmakers Take Salary Plus Pension

2009_08_doubledip.jpg At least four Albany legislators are collecting sweet pensions on top of their annual salaries, including one Assemblyman who sponsored legislation last year to crack down on state workers for the same practice, known as "double dipping." Seventy-five-year-old Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg (D-Long Island) technically "retired" last year but continues to "work" at the state capital, where you're paying him $101,500 in salary plus a pension of about $72,000. Forget it Jake, it's Albany, where it's perfectly legal for veteran lawmakers to "retire" at 65 and start collecting pensions, but without actually leaving their jobs, giving up their salaries or even telling their constituents.

Asked by the Times about his own double dipping, Weisenberg replied, "I don’t see this as that. This is something I earned." And Senator George H. Winner Jr., a 59-year-old Elmira Republican who pulls in an $80,000 annual pension on top of his $89,000 salary (all on top of his private law practice), explains that he's "actually saving the taxpayers money" because if he truly retired he'd still be collecting a pension but the state would also be making pension contributions for his successor. Way to take one for the team, Winner!

After all the shenanigans they pulled, especially this year, they don't even deserve to breathe the same air as the rest of us.

"Weisenberg replied, "I don’t see this as that. This is something I earned."

Go fuck yourself

all of us pay for this crap. The state needs a wholesale audit and all state contracts should be voided and arbitrated. All this and the state is almost bankrupt and on top of that they increased the budget over last year. F these people.

Are you listening AG Cuomo?

teachers do this too. they retire, get their pensions, and then go back to work as "substitutes."

Vote all incumbents out. I'm tired of the same old assholes. I want some new assholes.

The saddest part is that next to Espada they don't look that bad.

Wonder why the state is bankrupt.

In the scheme of things this is a small percentage of the overall budget. So who should really care??

I do, since my money contributes to this budget and now I'm being told that, through a loophole, someone is getting almost twice what he should be paid on my dime. True, tax money is used for a wide-range of expenses, but it is illegal to steal from legitimate causes to make your own life life more comfortable. And saying 'It's only a small percentage' is horseshit. If enough people participate in this scheme, millions are lost.

Since you're already defrauding a state agency in a similar manner, I can understand your lack of rage, but this pisses me off.

I am not defrauding anyone you moron. I stubbed and hit my ring finger so I am HURT and cannot currently fulfill my duties. The moving business is through a cousin so I do not TECHNICALLY have another business. When you start getting into other people's business its shameless and just plain rude.

I foresee this practice ending soon.

He's basically saying "I deserve twice what my constituents understand they're paying me."

I know plenty of more qualified people that would gladly take their jobs for less than half the pension alone.

And what did you do in Albany?

As little as possible.

We should lynch these assholes...

Or don't vote either Democrat or Republican in the next elections. Otherwise you get what you deserve - more of the same.

You earned it? It's not your fucking money, asshole! It's ours.
