Last Night's Action: Head Hunting

2009_08_notwright.jpg

  • Giants 5 Mets 4 (10 Innings): The loss hurts, but the more important question is how is David Wright? Wright was hit in the head by a pitch from Matt Cain in the third inning and had to leave the game. He walked on his own power into an ambulance for further testing. That incident overshadowed the rest of the game. Johan Santana tried for revenge, throwing behind Pablo Sandoval in the seventh before yielding a home run. He then drilled Bengie Molina before Jerry Manuel took him out of the game. The Mets scored three in the eighth to tie the game, but Molina got his revenge in the 10th with a solo shot to provide the winning run.
  • Yankees 5 Seattle 2 : Sergio Mitre got the win, pitching 5 1/3 innings and allowing two runs (one earned). Nick Swisher and Derek Jeter both hit home runs at Safeco Field and Mariano Rivera got the save. The Yankes are now 7 1/2 games up on the Red Sox, who fell to the Texas Rangers yesterday.
  • Chivas 2 Red Bulls 0: The Bulls got blanked again.

It looked like the pitch that struck David Wright hit his helmet. Hopefully he'll recover quickly. I think he's really the only Met regular that hasn't been on the disabled list. I shudder to think what could have happened if he weren't wearing the protective headgear.

Yep, he only sat out one game this year, I believe, and it was a few days ago.

I hope the medical staff doesn't botch this...there's no reason to rush for Wright back to this wasted season, just let him sit out the rest of the season. Remember the debacle with Ryan Church's concussions last year, not to mention all the injuries it seems that they've boggled this year.

Maybe if the Red Bulls had a real name they might win a real game ...
