Daniel Schuler spoke to state police yesterday for the first time since toxicology reports revealed that his wife Diane was drunk and high when she drove the wrong way in the Taconic crash that killed eight. Mr. Schuler, lawyer Dominic Barbara and a private investigator met with authorities in Westchester County still trying to nail down a timeline of Mrs. Schuler's drive. Police showed them a video of Mrs. Schuler at a Sunoco station, appearing coherent and looking for painkillers a little over an hour before she would call her brother, Warren Hance, sounding disoriented. A friend of Hance's told the Times, “His first impression was..it might be some diabetic condition...or she was having a stroke. There was no ‘Oh my God, could she be drunk?’ ” An official at the meeting with Mr. Schuler said, "No new areas were covered." The family's PI said, “The Diane that they know does not drink and would never smoke marijuana in a car with kids.” In a recent interview, Daniel Schuler's brother said that the family was aware that Mrs. Schuler used marijuana to sometimes help her sleep.

"Daniel Schuler's brother said that the family was aware that Mrs. Schuler used marijuana to sometimes help her sleep."
Last I heard, there were all kind of over-the-counter and prescription remedies for insomnia. I think they're called sleeping pills, and they are legal. But it's a secret...
So you're saying she would have been better off mixing a fistfull of sleeping pills with her Absolute? Or was there some other point?
Are people really still using the "It's illegal so it MUST be wrong" defense? If she ate a bunch of sleeping pills while she was drunk as shit and driving, would it have been better?
Let me think about it. "Drinking and driving is illegal so it MUST be wrong." Yup, it works for me. See you later, pothead.
The patriot act is also law. So that must also work for you.
Drinking and driving risks the lives of innocent bystanders and drivers, so it is wrong. Whether something is wrong or not has NOTHING to do with the law and that kind of attitude is exactly what is wrong with this country. People like you elected Bush, whose whole philosophy was "I'm the president so what I do must be right." The law is there to punish people who have done wrong, and to try to prevent people from doing wrong, not to decide what is right or wrong. It's so classic that you'd rather not have to THINK for yourself - you want the government to do it for you. Then when it goes wrong you can claim it was never your fault at all.
No, she would still be a piece of crap. But why doesn't her family just say she liked to toke up? Why do they have to make an excuse?
Never touched weed in my life, just thing we have much bigger things to worry about.
Who the hell cares if she liked to toke up? It was the .19 BAC that was the issue. Her family is all "she wasn't an alcoholic" but does it really matter that much? I think we can safely assume that she didn't drive drunk that often because she never got a DUI before. All that really matters is that morning, she chose to drink a bunch of vodka for whatever reason, and killed herself and a lot of other people.
Word. Her husband just needs to own up and say "my wife fucked up"
On the NY Times forum, a bunch of people said they got really messed up when they mixed pot and alcohol. Yet you seem to know for a fact that it was only the alcohol that caused this crash. That is impressive. Congrats.
Well, if they say so on the NY Time forum it MUST be true.
And some people do use marijuana as a means of coping with anxiety disorders. It may be illegal but that doesn't mean it turns you into a lunatic.
Now, .19 BAC with more alcohol to be digested in your belly (especially if you're a non-drinker) might turn you into a lunatic.
Either way those kids and men stay dead. And the person responsible is dead too. There's nothing to gain from all this BS.
Any lawsuits that come out of this will make the plaintiff a scumbag. How much is a family member worth?
sorry I don't have first hand knowledge of such things; the board was full of recovered addicts who presumably did
I am still quite interested in if she had Ambien (Zolpidem) either in her system, in her possession, or a history of access (Rxs, etc.). Very short acting, it can cause a person to look wide awake and functional, but the brain is asleep. This doesn't excuse the BAC, but may have contributed, especially when combined with the booze. If she had trouble sleeping, she may have also sought it out. She's still a drunk driver who killed a bunch of people, but am very interested in that tox. And no, this is not a new idea, I did post my suspicions on the first reporting. Same drug that caused one of the Kennedys to get nailed ramming a barrier at 3AM thinking he was going to a vote.
I'm sure they tested for all kind of prescription drugs.
Seems to me that maybe she was the type who was afraid of Dr.s and Dentists and kept procrastinating about seeking help for that abcess. Maybe she got desperate on that drive home and when she couldn't get any pain killers at the store she started to drink that vodka to deaden the pain, not realizing how drinking it fast would make her sick and then really drunk. Perhaps she thought she could make it home but then became disoriented. I know folks want to say she is a drunk but if she is not a drunk and drank that alcohol in the morning in the hopes it would stop her tooth pain, then I can see why it would have made her sick, unreasonable on the phone, and disoriented enough to get into that accident. Has this thought not occurred to anyone? Of course, there is no excuse for drinking with those kids in the car but we don't know to what extent she had this phobia of Dr.s either. I just find it hard to believe that she did this deliberatly.
How far-fetched do people have to get rather than coming to terms with the cold hard fact that people can do horrible things like this? Who knows what brought her to drink and drive, but that is what happened, and it was deliberate.
While there is a chance she may not have been in her right mind, she was not a moron. She did not have a profound learning disability, and she didn't have anyone IV feeding her that booze. This speculation is ridiculous on so many levels. How can you say that someone might not realize that drinking alcohol fast would make them really drunk? I'm sorry, but is this not common knowledge? Her 9 year old niece probably knew at least the basic effects of alcohol.
"Of course, there is no excuse for drinking with those kids in the car..."
She shouldn't have been drinking and driving PERIOD, let alone with children in the car.
The phobia idea is one of the more bizarre among hundreds, or thousands of possibilities for this scenario..
well said
If she were an alcoholic, there would be signs. A bar that would be frequented. A liquor store that that she patronized often enough that she would have been remembered. If they don't exist then there is some doubt that she was an habitual drunk. I remember being in a liquor store in midtown and the only other customer, a not unattractive woman was paying for a half pint of vodka which she then put in her handbag. I happened to comment to the clerk that she was too good looking to have such a problem and he said that she made that purchase almost everyday.
She drank the bottle of vodka to numb the impending pain of her intentional murder-suicide.
Husband is covering up the reasons why she did it because it likely implicates him in some improprieties.
Exactly! And get a proper avatar, Kim Bong Ill.
Good idea.
YES!
Seems most all have forgotten that Schuler was driving within the marked lane and didn't drive like a maniac after Tappan Zee (as she did during 60 miles on 17 and 87). She was drunk, but had control of the vehicle. AT LEAST 12 WITNESSES said in July 28/29 articles that she was driving normally on the curved Pleasantville Road exit ramp and negotiated a few curves on the Taconic. This was not a typical weaving/DWI crash. The woman had high tolerance to alcohol and could see fine. If she'd have been weaving like a typical drunk, she'd never have made 1.7 miles on the busy parkway. Since she could see/control the car, she'd have pulled over/turned around on the exit ramp to avoid a DWI if she wanted to - I know because I used to be a drunk driver (never crashed).
No matter whether she was drunk, stoned, medically tweeked, or had a bad gas/diarhea attack, she still had control of her car.
from The Intentional Traffic Crash:
" The intentional traffic accident is probably the most common means of suicide that is typically misclassified. Unless the person has left a suicide note, it is not obvious from the physical evidence that the crash is anything other than an accident. This is especially true because it is not uncommon for such drivers to be drunk at the time of these “accidents”... Head-on car-truck accidents should also be analyzed as possible suicides when it appears that the lone [not in this case] driver was in the wrong lane and should have seen the truck coming. "
"No matter whether she was drunk, stoned, medically tweeked, or had a bad gas/diarhea attack, she still had control of her car."
And if you're enough of a pro to know you're f'ed up you should also know enough to get out from behind the wheel. ESPECIALLY (and yes it does add on to the guilt) with litle kids in the car.
I've been there, so no BS.
Right - any "professional drunk driver" doesn't want a DWI (Schuler had none), and with kids in car she'd have gotten 5 counts of child endangerment. She had enough tolerance/experience/control to drive unnoticed from the Tappan Zee to the Taconic, and would have pulled over unless she had intentions. ANY one who was medically ill would have pulled over and called 911 if they were bad enough, esp with kids in the car.
Investigators should be looking more at why she chose to do this - she seemed very angry (more than just drunk) when driving aggressively on 17 and 87. I'm curious about the 2 minute "mystery" call at 12:08.
This husband needs to just buck up and face the truth, it's come out and there is no denying it. He's just making himself look like someone who cannot tell reality from fantasy. Eventually he will come around but in the meantime this is a waste of time for all involved.
Ditto, enough of him already. Why doesn't he shut the fuck up & take care of his only son?!
