NJ Cop Takes in Dylan Thinking He's "From One of Our Hospitals"

The man who once penned the song "Hurricane," now might inspire someone to write their own tune about his unjust imprisonment after a run-in with Jersey law enforcement. Folk/rock legend Bob Dylan was taken in by a NJ patrolwoman in Long Branch a few weeks ago when locals became suspicious when they spotted the 68-year-old wandering around in their neighborhood.

The incident took place on July 23rd, but word of it broke on the anniversary of Dylan's historic performance at Woodstock*. While in Jersey a few weeks back, Dylan had strayed quite a bit from the hotel he was staying at while on tour with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp, in town to play at a minor league ballpark in nearby Lakewood. The singer was looking at a "For Sale" sign on a front lawn while hanging out in the pouring rain when a neighbor called police to alert them to "a weirdo hanging around her house."

Onto the scene came 24-year-old Patrolwoman Kristie Buble, who simply did not believe Dylan when he told her who he was. The officer told ABC News:

He was wearing black sweatpants tucked into black rain boots, and two raincoats with the hood pulled down over his head. We see a lot of people on our beat, and I wasn't sure if he came from one of our hospitals or something. He was acting very suspicious. Not delusional, but suspicious. He asked me if I could drive him back to the neighborhood once I verified who he was...I've seen pictures of Bob Dylan from a long time ago and he didn't look like Bob Dylan to me at all. It never crossed my mind that this could really be him...I said to him, 'OK Bob, why don't you get in the car and we'll drive to the hotel to verify this?' I pulled into the parking lot and sure enough, there were these enormous tour buses, and I thought, 'Whoa.'

At some point during the incident, an older sergeant joined in the proceedings and also failed to recognize Dylan. As for the young Buble, a fellow officer described her "like a 16-year-old kid next to this living legend." And one Long Branch local added, "I don't think she was familiar with his entire body of work." Buble noted that the star was "really nice" and understood why she had to keep him throughout the mix-up, perhaps hoping this was his shot at a free White House beer. When asked if she had a chance to ask for an autograph once she realized her gaffe, she says that Dylan's manager quickly cut off contact between the two, as she bid farewell by saying, "Um, have a nice day."

From what is written here, it doesn't seem as if they detained him, just that he got a ride back to his hotel. So what's the story? Oh my god, some cops didn't recognize so moldy old hippie.

I'm 50, and I'm not really all that familiar with his entire body of work either. I bet if it was Cate Blanchett AS Bob Dylan, there would have been no problem whatsoever.

The times, they have changed.

I am [GULP] 57 and I'd know him anywhere, especially by the voice if nothing else.

Maybe it's not earthshaking news, I am happy to know this story. Dylan is one of a kind and always will be. A character from start to finish.

Cate Blanchet can eat her heart out-- playing Dylan is not BEING Dylan.

profiling! white people can't catch a break.

yeah, they shouldn't have given him a ride back to his hotel

maybe the homeowners shouldn't have put a giant FOR SALE probably on it if they didn't want anyone looking.

this should have been posted underneath your other post.

It's becoming increasingly illegal to be poor, or in this case perceived as such, in our neo fascist homeland. Indigent people are considered sub human and become the property of law enforcement. It's disgusting. This country is going down the drain.

It's just that no one likes creepy people standing outside of their house in the rain.

I can understand the police concern when they approached him. His latest look borders on deranged.

Of course he was dressed like that because you never know when a hard rain's gonna fall.

If a comment on a blog is a reliable source, Dylan has a habit of wandering alone around sketchy neighborhoods in Los Angeles, where he lives.

He could have proven his identity by singing a song or two. Nobody else can be that off-key.

I once drove by his house in Malibu. It's in one of the fanciest neighborhoods, on a cliff above the ocean. His yard is filled with rusty old barrels and car parts. The neighbors all hate him because he drags down their property values. I believe one of his neighbors even sued him over it recently.

You are who you are. Fame and fortune changes some people. Apparently not Mr. Dylan.

not quite

Damn racist cops!
Dylan should have gotten belligerent at their ignorance!
How can they not know who he is?
Dylan should demand a public apology and that the cop be fired and mandated to a hippie sensitivity class.

This is a great story. Good for Bob for staying cool. No "don't you know who I am?" VIP crap. He HAS aged quite a bit, as we all do. I met him backstage a few years ago after a concert in Tokyo at the Budokan and he hardly said a word to the 20-odd people in the room and yes, we were all odd. Me, too. Long live Bob Dylan. If it's true he has this habit of walking around drabby neighborhoods, that's his hobby, no crime in that. Maybe he's looking for things. Looking for things. Poetry doesn't always happen in posh places. I salute you Mr No Bangles!

By the way, Dylan is releasing a new CD in time for Xmas, an album of Christmas songs. Really. They'll all know his face and name by Christmastime, watch! Another Jewish Christmas album. ''When will they ever learn....when will they ever learn?''

He's overrated. I like Phil Ochs better.
