Tribeca Locals Want Latin Hotspot Sazon To Shush

Angry Tribeca residents gathered at a Community Board 1 meeting Wednesday to confront the owner of Sazon, a newish bi-level Latin Caribbean restaurant and lounge. The basement salsa parties have become quite popular, and that's upsetting some neighbors like Barbara Spitzer, who decried the "party atmosphere... Reade Street feels like I’m living on Seventh Avenue." Another resident complained, "People are coming here to have fun. Fun is good, but it’s not very good on a residential street." Then owner Genero Morales detected a whiff of racism against his largely Puerto Rican clientele, and that insinuation infuriated Spitzer: "You really shouldn’t go there. It’s really inappropriate, and it’s quite offensive." The protests come at a bad time for Sazon, which is still waiting for liquor license approval from the SLA and has been selling booze under temporary licenses. Tribeca Committee chairman Peter Braus agreed with the neighbors, and told Morales, "There’s a discrepancy, clearly, between how you represented yourself [in January] and how the community perceives you." Morales is taking steps to quiet down, but downtown community boards won't really be satisfied until all bars are relocated to a designated "fun barge" somewhere off the southeast tip of Staten Island.

Hispanics around here do tend to be loud. That said, the Tribeca residents should know that neighborhoods change and shouldn't complain when they hear noise in New York. If you want quiet, find a neighborhood that's not a known nightlife hotspot -- there are many.

It's interesting when people try to play the race card. The owners of a club in Soho tried to do this and it didn't work.

They are a loud bunch. Forget the music...they can't ever shut their mouths for a minute.

This looks like an upscale joint. didn't gothamist have a post on this place. I don't see salsa dancers as troublemakers.

  • Comic Book Guy

Yeah, the link is in the first sentence. And Spitzer sounds like a real stuck up princess. She'll get the place shut down, and then in a few years get pregnant and move to Greenwich anyway.

  • JacqueMehoff

thanks, and I clicked on the link to see what ms. spitzer looks like and you hit it on the nose on the description.

lots of entitled people in this neighborhood.

  • felixthecat2

Don't go there? that is condescending. It should be discuss if other clubs are not targeted but his club is due to the cliente.

How arrogant! Why shouldn't he "go there." How is it "inappropriate"? It may or may not be true, but she thinks she should be immune from the accusation itself--why? Because she's a wealthy, liberal downtowner who reads the Times, listens to NPR, and shops at Whole Foods? She lives a block from freekin' lower Broadway, but shouldn't have to feel like she's living on 7th Ave.? Why don't these people just move to New Jersey and stop trying to transform downtown Manhattan into a gated community.

Good point because it is COMPLETELY inappropriate to not want people screaming and vomiting on your residential block. I commend you John on your insightful view.

I have several Hispanics in my building. Before the landlord finally put his foot down and threatened evictions last month, they would blast their salsa music all hours of the night. I'm not against people enjoying themselves, but I see no reason why I have to join their party when I don't want to. I have a job and need my sleep. I think it's a Hispanic gene (this loud music thing). They all do it.

Judging from your comment, your job must not require much intellect or forethought.

  • Gwinny

It's not a "gene," but it is certainly a cultural thing. I live in a Dominican neighborhood, and my neighbors just LOVE blasting loud music at all hours(on the streets, from their apartments, etc.). Fortunately I like Latin music (except reggaeton!) so it doesn't really bother me. There are way worse things than loud music.

  • I Hate The 7 Train

Try going to a public park on the weekends!! They blast their music there too!! Its nuts!

  • Mr. Know-It-All

Are you serious!?! I search your post for any hint of irony to no avail. An Hispanic loud music gene? Where is that in relation to the ignorant bigot moron gene.
