One Arrest Made in Brutal Beating of Pratt Student

081209clintonhill.jpg Detectives from the 88th Precinct have arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with last week’s assault on Eddy Sanchez, a 22-year-old Pratt architecture student who is still in critical condition in a medically induced coma at Kings County Hospital Center. The suspect, Eugene Adams, is charged with assault, robbery and criminal possession of stolen property. A police source tells The Local Adams resides at 1100 Bedford Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant, three long blocks east from the site of the August 4th attack at Grand and Lexington Avenues in Clinton Hill. After releasing surveillance footage of teens attempting to use Sanchez's ATM card at a bodega, police tracked down Adams through a tip called in to the Crime-Stoppers hot line, (800) 577-TIPS. According to ABC News, as many as four other teens may have been involved in the attack, but no other arrests were immediately made. It's being reported that the suspects beat Sanchez after he refused to give them money, and one of the assailants used a crowbar.

If he had been riding a bike while beating Sanchez it would have been attempted murder. In all other cases, it qualifies as assault....it's called the "Patrick Pogan" rule.

  • TheeMayor

Looks like Gus over there in Harlem knows how it's done. He should run for governor to replace the admitted adulterous pig you now have. Here in the deep south, we have had a resurrection of sorts by a certain empire once thought to be dead. The word is getting around. You guys in the north need to get your mess together and take back what is rightfully yours. Your government has disarmed you and left you as easy prey.

  • MrCow

i'm a pratt student and we didn't get any email from pratt until the 11th.

  • rasputinsghost

before the internet the racist posters/trolls on gothamist would've had their audience limited to the unfortunate people passing by who are in earshot.

  • dadoc

Yep, I was right. Glad I decided to get a good night's sleep for what has been a busy day. Just missed the customary goat-buggering, your mama, you guys are loney, feed the goose stuff. And Felix, knock off the racist crap with me. You have no idea how many folk of every race, country, creed, orientation or disability I tried to help today. Mutual respect all around, everybody treated the same. Everybody (including me), just being people with people. Even vegans & cat people!

  • Snoopy

Oh that's right he left out Nannystate (the person who realized felixthecat2 was a feline feeder of great proportions and is only second to the cat lady at the pyramid of Cestius in Rome) in his list of individuals. Such a silly boy he is. Probably caused by thinking up other ideas on how to get rid of geese without getting rid of them.

  • Bernie Goetz for Mayor

The behavior exhibited by these so called "people" can only be attributed to their crude instinct which tells their brain "there is helpless prey let's attack forthwith." Civilized man has learned to supress the violent instinctual urge "to gets mines at all costs, yo." Certain aspects of our society have yet to develop the ability to resist that instinct and therefore have more in common with animals than they do with humans.

  • felixthecat2

Damn, Snoopy is so RACIST, stop giving Snoopy a bad name. He is a great dog and you are an old frustrated old man. Brown Bag will solve your frustrations.

  • Snoopy

"an old frustrated old man" Can you describe in English what that combination of "old" means?

  • felixthecat2

I see the old white frustrated white men were here last night patting each other on the backs instead of their wives. LMFAO

  • Snoopy

One other thing. Can you explain to us what are "old white frustrated white men?" It's the double white thing I don't understand.

  • Snoopy

Shouldn't you be out in the rain feeding geese or horses? Leave the regular discussions to people that think, rather than react always in a PC bullshit way.

The thugs were black plain and simple. Do you have a problem with calling a spade a spade? Or do you call them the other black cards in the deck?

If the Afro American culture doesn't like them being profiled then they should come out loud and clear in their neighborhoods every time one of their spawn fucks up.

Plus get a job you PC girlie man.

  • valeriob

listen here goat fucker. don't come out of left field sniping away half-witted remarks and consider having won the comment battle. You're lucky I'm even reading this and that I don't have enough common sense not to reply.

And we did plenty of patting last night, told your mom we might wake you up, but i guess you slept right through the train. Choo choo!

  • felixthecat2

:Goat fucker? Dude, you moms isn't a goat but a cow.

  • tmz is evil

    Hey, Gothamist,

How do you feel now that your blog has become a hangout for every racist, embittered malcontent, and asshole on the planet-- just like Curbed.com used to before it banned anonymous posting? I bet your advertisers are very pleased that these are the types of readership you're attracting.

But money is money, right? Who cares who it's from?

  • TheeMayor

You are a disgrace to your race.

  • felixthecat2

Yep, Snoopy, Valeriob, DaDoc and Bernie, all a bunch of frustrated lonely racists.

  • NannyState

As opposed to felixthecat2 who enjoys the company of his 122 cats in his small cramped Inwood studio filled with excrement and newspapers with the Mayor's picture cut out of them.

  • valeriob

While you may not see color, I see a small group of black teenagers in the video. Why avoid race for the sake of political correctness?

  • Bernie Madoff-Goetz

Maybe if this wasn't such a longstanding problem in this city--roving bands of black teens beating the life out of people for a few bucks, an iPod or whatever--people wouldn't be quite so emotional about the issue. And yes, drop the handful of white-on-black examples if you want--they don't equate to even 1/100th of the black-on-white crimes of this type. Individuals such as yourself either live far, far away from where any of this shit happens or right next door and are so overcome by white guilt you've basically turned into a priest. Either way, STFU.

  • valeriob

hope that was meant for R.C. because it doesn't make sense for my comment.

  • yytttt

No one said anything about political correctness. I'm not here to sprinkle sunshine (i don't have any). I see most colors just fine. Why don't you show me one peice of proof that these kids did what they did because they are black and I will change my stance that you're all a bunch of (unfortunately) uneducated racist swine? By the way, the New Yorker has a good article about racism (in referrence to the Harvard professor incident), that could be a good start.

  • valeriob

    These kids are black.

Why are you insisting that we prove they acted violently because they are black, why can't they just be black?

I don't need to show you my degrees to prove that I am educated. What I will say is that these teenagers are violent scum and belong in jail. (not because they are black, but because of what they did)

No one is saying that they weren't black, no one is saying what they did was good. I am (and several others on this thread) objecting to remarks such as these:

Bernie Madoff-Goetz replied to comment from whitecastlerock

it's politically incorrect to hold blacks accountable for their actions.

    [25] | Steven

Yep, of course the teens are blacks. Black scums starting their criminal career. Once again the parents are no where to be found and probably have no clue where their child is.

These along with several other proudly racist comments from the previous article about the incident.

  • valeriob

Then you, Seven, and R.C need to address them by name and not generalize Gothamist.com as a watering hole for racists.

I respect what you're saying. Just don't throw the rest of us into the fire.

  • yytttt

It is by no means everyone, that is not what I'm trying to say. But comments like those find their way onto many articles and, as RC points out, it gives Gothamist (not to mention New Yorkers) a bad name.

  • whitecastlerock

So why are you here then? To sprinkle a little sunshine on those you condemn?

  • yytttt

I agree with you... it's also funny how proud these people are of their racism.

  • Billiamsburg

I would just like to say I would vote for any politician who said they would destroy the projects (like Atlanta, and Chicago). It's not so insane. It would be one of the most financially profitable things the city could do, and wold free up tons of money for things like the MTA and reduce the strain on the NYPD. Man those of us who treated our city and neighbors like humans could really have a wonderful thing here.

  • valeriob

while others may consider your comment racist (because they are ignorant), it is pure capitalism and i love it.

  • Snoopy

dadoc for mayor! His policy and foresight are much better than that dick head Dinkens ever was or could be as mayor.

    Tennis anyone?

    Nannystate for lieutenant governor!

  • valeriob

Snoopy, I'm in. Can we invite this guy?

    http://twurl.cc/1fov

  • dadoc

Um, before Snoop, with the best of intentions, I'm sure, kinda tries to support what I'm saying and gets into a pissing match with folks, I bid adieu, have much to do and an early start tomorrow. Whatever, I hope the beaten man recovers, and those who did it are dealt with most severely. And may we all hope for when such horrible things are a aberration, and not an everyday occurence. Pax

Yeah guys black oppression ended with the emancipation proclamation! oh wait

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/10/books/10masl.html?_r=1

yeah man the treatment of irish in the 1900s was completely the same as the treatment of bla- man, i can't even COMPLETE that sentence. oh well

  • Snoopy

Granted there was bitterness and the black man didn't quite have the same opportunities as whitey back at the turn of the century. But it's still bullshit. When my parents came over in 1912 they didn't get twenty acres and a mule to start out with. They busted their asses for 14 to 16 hours a day six days a week and made a go of it. Look at the Asians and the Mexicans today and you will still see them busting their balls to make a better life for their children.

Look at who are the prime residents of Stuyvesant, Bronx Science and Brooklyn Tech. They didn't get there listening to thug music. It's called cultural differences. GET with the program.

  • Bernie Goetz for Mayor

I have spent many hours thinking of this subject and have come to the following conclusion: We as the modern day white American race are paying for the sins of our ancestors who brought these people here by force (karma is a b*tch). Our ancestors have reaped the rewards of cheap labor w/ high profit and we are left to deal with the former slaves' incompetence at life. Myself or my family have never gained a single penny from slavery, but I'll tell you what, we have collectively spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes "supporting" these so called humans.

We have to look back and ask ourselves, "was it worth bringing these people here?" The answer is ofcouse no, we should have left roaming the plains chasing Elephant with spears.

  • Snoopy

Precisely. Look at the sorry state they are in back in the "old country". They have no roots in what is going on here in the states because they constantly whine about how they are kept down. It's bullshit because I know quite a few very very dark Dominicans that would pass for Black African American but refuse to be associated with the culture. Hispanics tend to stay clear of the Afro American culture because they find it poisonous to their culture.

  • keepdiscoevil

What community college do you teach at again? Are there still seats available for your class?

  • dadoc

No, oppression continues to this day. Women transported for prostitution, illegals migrating to pick our produce and deliver our pizzas, US sweatshop labor supported by union gangs and graft to politicians. I'm talking the US, not friggin Alabama. But the kids of a lot of those workers are now teaching your kids and studying in our universities. They aren't spending generations on their asses. 1951 Alabama is not relevant to 2009 NYC public housing. I use my lineage as an explanation, never an excuse. As I said before, but missed a few, you can also ask your governor, your former mayor and the US Attorney General, as well as the Director of the Rose Planeterium. The "protected classes" should inform us as to the statute of limitations on the events that provide their excuses, so "never again" can have some meaning. To each by their means.

  • Snoopy

    dadoc for mayor!

  • dadoc

Nooooooo! Then FelixtheCat2 will hate me too! I'm waitng for the Evil Overlord position to open up.

  • dadoc

You're not gettin an "attempted murder" charge, even if iffy, because PD Compstat needs to keep things downgraded to keep proving that "Crime is Down". Burglary becomes missing property, assault becomes DisCon, vics who can speak for themselves are talked into downgrading the offense. B-g only knows what they put rape victims thru.

I still say eleminate entitlements, level the projects, survival of the fittest, build affordable housing for working folk. May be a bloodbath for a bit, but better than the long-term costs in real human lives and the quality of life for those who deserve it. And before you bother saying it: REGARDLESS OF RACE. Trash is trash. Dispose in the proper receptacle.

  • T

Yeah man, "fuck anyone in the ghetto" is a really strong platform. You should run for governor.

  • Snoopy

Since you have problems spelling your own name when you fill out your welfare and food stamp applications, I would keep quiet regarding the ghetto mentality.

There are many ethnic groups that lived in ghettos over the past five hundred years. Most of them through hard work and their different cultural sensibilities moved on and out of the ghetto. There are other tribal groups that seem to love the fact they can live for nothing and continually sponge off society over some wrong that occurred nearly a century and a half ago that very few present day Americans had ancestors that had any part of that event.

Tell your ghetto friends to get off their lazy asses and stop thinking a pimped out Escalade and a fuck are the ultimate things in life.

  • dadoc

The "ghetto" is a product of its own self-perpetuation. Its inhabitants are provided with just about everything (such as it is) from the pockets of those who work. Many of the inhabitants also prey on those who support them, often in the most horrible ways. Nobody "keeps 'em down" except themselves. And before you get into a race thing, don't bother; you can address your responses to our President, our Surgeon General, Oprah, Cosby, a few Supreme Court Justices and Professor Gates of Harvard.

Nothing is holding them down, and nothing will.

  • T

What do you say to someone where "ghetto" and "black" are synonymous? You're right, there is clearly no oppression present here.

  • snickerdoodle
What do you say to someone where "ghetto" and "black" are synonymous? You're right, there is clearly no oppression present here.

Ghetto and black are synonymous. Same as hillbilly or redneck being synonymous with white. It's a fact of life, deal with it.
  • dadoc

That their race is irrelevant, and is not a reason to remain there. The original purpose was to provide support to those in need, not a breeding ground for a multigenerational biomass that bleeds resources and feeds on everything around it. Race is irrelevant. My grandparents came here from Ireland in the early 1900s with nothing, worked their butts off to arise from poverty, and their kids did even better. They worked their butts off, and their kids (despite "affirmative action" and other quotas) did better. And I work hard for my kids to do better, despite the crippling taxes that go to support the drains on society. Did I mention race? No way. Only that such a system cannot continue to exist as it is. The only "oppression" is in themselves. So don't piss me off.

  • T

    ...said the middle-class, white guy.

  • dadoc

No, says the upper-class guy who spent quite a number of years repairing the physical damage done both by and to the denizens of this city in the wee hours in ERs an ORs. And always did my best. Just fed up that it has to keep happening. Those're my creds, deal with 'em as you like. And if you like to say white as a putdown, feel free. I know what I am, and I know my own merits.

  • Mr Mel

Jose, the store owner said "Si." Then he called his lawyer, Cy.

  • T

Ok, we got the "angry white guy, lock them up and throw away the key" perspective. Can we hear from someone who doesn't like a filthy bigot now, please?

  • mellod
  • Snoopy

Thanks for the link. And people complain about some of the posters here. Here's a quote from that blog.

"i must apologize. the accts i had read indicated that he has resisted. now i know that he did not. — sweet baby jesus" Now is that an asshole or what?

Also as reported - from his 39 year old sister "Ms. Morris said her brother had attended Norman Thomas High School but left. “He’s a good kid,” she said, “but he has some problems with going to school.”

That is out of central casting for sure. What has the thug done in his entire life that made him a good kid? Kill his mother and father.

  • seven

Whenever I have a hankering for good old fashion racism and hatred, I only have to turn the comments section of a Gothamist post involving crimes against whites/middle class folks perpetrated by blacks. It's pretty disgusting that you all celebrate the assault of a poor student by spewing hatred. I'm sure half of you are glad this happened, just so you have another example in your back pocket of "reasons blacks should be sterilized".

Turning this horrible incident perpetrated by a bunch of punks into a referendum on blacks is like using Bernie Madoff case as proof that all Jews are greedy liars.

  • dadoc

Their race and/or economic status is irrelevant, and in no way excuses their actions, either personally or historically. They are dangerous to ALL society, and must be quarantined from ALL society. They forfeited their rights as a direct consequence of their voluntary actions.

  • yytttt

sorry for my ignorance, but could you provide a citation for your quotes there... can't seem to find them.

  • hotstepper

why would you want to contact sharpton? what good could possibly come of it?

i, for one, am not looking for greasy al to stand up for my melanin-deficient race if i were attacked. he is irrelevant and certainly no savior.

  • sexisicilian

That is what I asked yesterday when I first read about this story ... thanx for the info.

  • The Agrokrag

    Word, son.

  • snickerdoodle

I don't watch the local news. Can somebody put the accompanying photo into perspective for me? What does "This is not alright" mean exactly?

  • Snoopy

"What does "This is not alright" mean exactly?"

It is an abbreviation for the full message that read, "This is not al right reverend Al Sharpton." The last part was washed away during a brief summer shower. Plus the letter spacing was off a tad between al and right.

So it appears that the buffoon only is concerned with Afro Americans and not other ethnic groups of light skinned color being attacked by his chosen people.

  • Snoopy

Perhaps we need someone like Sheriff Joe Arpaio instead of these pieces of shit we have running our jails.

  • ChampionOfTheSun

I'd like to see the punishment for dumbshits like this to come in the form of public humiliation. Make them look as un-thug-like as possible. Going to prison obviously doesn't deter people anymore. In their ass backwards world it's probably just something to brag about.

  • ChampionOfTheSun

I use the term "people" very loosely. These fuckers are animals.

  • Snoopy

The local precinct did a really great job. First there is video shots of the idiots using the credit card in a bodega which I am sure was close to where they lived and the Kojaks and Columbos of the precinct went to the bodega and asked them do you know these guys? Jose, the store owner said "Si." The detectives called for an interpreter and lo and behold they found one of the perps.

  • sexisicilian

Does his age have anything to do with the charges it may be 18 for attempted murder ... but I am not sure.

  • billybob

is that true, attempted murder, why wouldn't they charge him with that off the bat?

  • Splicer

Attempted murder charges unless he flips on the others.

  • Amanda Harletsch

I live in Clinton Hill-Fort Green area...this is why i always take a car after 8pm when i need to go out....Really bad what happened to this kid. Brooklyn is soooooo neglected by police enforcement and transit authorities.

  • felixthecat2

That's Bloomberg for you, one tourist near Clinton HIll, manhattan was robbed and MANY cops were patrolling the whole Hell kitichen after that mugging. Bloomberg only cares about tourists and not residents

  • Mr Mel

Yet, he will continue to be Mayor because the other guys are all crooks.

  • whitecastlerock

I suspect the miscreants who treated this kid like their personal pinata must have been thinking the same thing...

  • Snoopy

I hope you have your car in a garage because the locals will steal the air out of your tires if they could flip it for a dime.

  • Nyctini11

They should get idiot of the year awards for trying to rob a college kid anyway, like what college kid has any real loot?

  • Mr Mel

The college student was a target of opportunity. He was white and they figured he must have something of value, a wristwatch, iPod, iPhone, cash and/or credit cards. Are they racists? Absolutely.

  • Nyctini11

Good point, they should also charge the f'ckers for a Hate Crime too then.

  • max999

I hope the people in Clinton Hill are paying relatively lower rents to correspond with the increasing level of random violence. If not, then it's probably another overpriced neighborhood.

  • faprilano

you, my friend max999, know nothing about our neighborhood. you yourself used the word "random" which means something similar could happen outside your door - and where is it that you live? similar horrid crimes have happened in the most "upscale" neighborhoods.

  • JC

sadly no, for that disgusting zoo of a neighborhood there was nothing random about this vicious attack. why people who are not on public assistance choose to live in that dysfunctional hornet's nest is a mystery. i truly feel sorry for the overprivilaged pratt students who on a regualr basis are faced the possibility of ending up like mr. sanchez. let's hope that gets better soon.

  • Mr Mel

    Again with the 2 baggers.

  • JC

sadly no, for that disgusting zoo of a neighborhood there was nothing random about this vicious attack. why people who are not on public assistance choose to live in that dysfunctional hornet's nest is a mystery. i truly feel sorry for the overprivilaged pratt students who on a regualr basis are faced the possibility of ending up like mr. sanchez. let's hope that gets better soon.

  • max999

    Who doesn't like lower rents?

  • Snoopy

But not on such a regular basis. The area sucks! Plain and simple. Pratt should have bailed out of the area 40 years ago and let the animals run the zoo over there.

I know the area and except for a three block radius around Pratt, it was a shit hole back in the sixties and it still is. Back in the sixties Pratt did a master plan and I believe the architect was either Barnes or Polshek and after they did a study their concept was to wall in the Pratt campus and make it a fortress. They didn't do it. Bad choice. They also had a chance to move to Pratt owned land on the north shore of Long Island. They didn't do that either. Bad choice. They could have bought up serious buildings in SoHo at the time also. They didn't because it seems they had a PC commitment to the area east of the campus. Bad choice.

  • faprilano

and just where do you live brainiac? have you been to the area since the 60's? get a f-ing life.

  • Snoopy

Actually I have been back to the area. And it still has the same look and feel as it did back then, if not worse.

Why might I ask has Pratt beefed up its motorized patrol on Hall street if the area has become so much safer?

In fact I took my two teenaged sons to see the Pratt campus two years ago because they heard so much about it from both myself, my wife and numerous friends who attended Pratt. They were not overly impressed by what appeared to be a total tasteless smorgasbord of new and old buildings with no concept of planning.

"The area is up and coming." That was a refrain I heard back in the early 70's. It is a beautiful stagnant cesspool of second rate artists that keep hanging on because they think it's a cool place to live.

Pratt itself has dropped a few notches also because no professional who is doing it, has the time to go over there to teach. Especially at night.

  • hotstepper

any word from his mammy about him being a good boy?

  • Snoopy

He was just entering the honors program in his fifth grade class.

Since these parents are doing such a shitty job with their children perhaps they should be sterilized along with their kids and the father, if he can be found. Maybe that will deter these animals from continuing the vicious cycle.

  • Amanda Harletsch

this planet is gonna reach 7 billion very soon, and 90% of humanity are like locust...the stupid kind. Let's never talk about the "right" of people of have kids no matter why, how, or any related consequence

  • silver

The "locusts" are needed to be serfs for the capitalists. 7 billion is alot of serfs to drive down the cost of labor increasing you spread for riches.

  • sharpshoota

I bet I can tell you what these 5 teens look like. We all know the description...and it fits.

  • EricRoberts

I bet most people could tell you what they looked like since they watched the surveillance video.

  • whitecastlerock

Why isn't this piece of shit charged with attempted murder?

  • Bernie Madoff-Goetz

it's politically incorrect to hold blacks accountable for their actions.

  • Soggy

Right, that's why there are so many black people in jail for crimes they didn't commit or for which other minorities get shorter sentences. Nice try though.
