Last week, a 22-year-old Pratt student was robbed and brutally beaten at Grand and Lexington Avenues in Brooklyn's Clinton Hill section. Eddy Sanchez had been walking towards to the Pratt campus around 10 p.m. last Tuesday night when, WCBS 2 reports, five teens surrounded him—"They demanded money, and when Sanchez initially refused, the suspects punched and kicked him into submission, and took what they wanted." The Daily News adds that one teen used a crowbar to beat him when he tried to fight back. Now Sanchez is in a coma at Kings County Hospital.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, "The motivation was robbery. His credit cards were taken from him, and the credit cards were subsequently used." Surveillance video also captured some of the teens using Sanchez's ATM card to withdraw cash.
Sanchez's mother Betty, who, with her husband, flew from Miami to be with their son, told the News, "I want everyone to pray for him. There's a God who loves him very much. I'm confident Eddy is going to pull through." The Local has a photograph of the scene after the attack: A blood stain, a candle and a sign near it saying, "THIS IS NOT ALRIGHT."

When I lived in the Bronx I gotten robbed one time. I hated the neighborhood from the start, so I used to keep my cards, cash and phone in my back pocket or in my gym bag.
The guy came up to me (I swear I almost shit myself, I was so scared) and pointed a gun at me and demanded my money. I tossed him my hand bag and told him that all I had was gym clothes. He took off with my bag, good lord he must have been SO pissed to just find tampons and different Club-Saver cards in it. Of course, my keys and work ID I got back, but I thank the lord every day that I kept all the important stuff ON my person.

Well, I went to Pratt and have to say that attacks like his were all to common in that neighborhood. One of my female friends went to the hospital after being beaten by three guys for a grand total of twenty dollars. Fortunately, the whole thing was recorded on Pratt security cameras and they were arrested within an hour.
Pratt has an open gate policy that allows people from the neighborhood to wander around in our campus during daylight hours.It's a huge problem and I've never understood this policy. It's a private institution. Supposedly, it was to mitagate some of the tension in the neighborhood, but all it does is invite some really creepy people into a college campus that should be a safe place for young people.
Lots of racial and socio-economic tension in that neighborhood and groups of criminal individuals most definately did make a point of going after the students. Really hope this poor kid and his family pull through this alright.

In NYC, there are a lot of minorities who are low on the socioeconomic ladder, hence they commit more of the crimes, usually against people who are higher up on the ladder (white people). It has nothing to do with racism. If this happened in Kansas or a racially homogeneous part of the country, the poor people would be white, and they would be the ones committing crimes like this.

If you sort by race you see that only 8 percent of the victims (and 7 percent of the perps, btw) were white. Blacks made up 61 percent of both victims and perps. So if you're white in this town you have a pretty good chance of not getting murdered.

This would be further up in the newspaper if the kids were cought by the cops, released on bail, given provisional passports and flown to a foreign continent. Obviously it should have been reported sooner for better chances of catching the prepubescent dicks, but unfortunately these incidents are not quite as unique as the case you're referring to.

I'm surprised Gothamist reported this, seeing how the victim is white and there appears to be no evidence of a "hate crime". But if the perpetrators were not also white then this crime was definitely a hate crime and should be reported as such.

Yep. One good trick is to carry two wallets. One with your money, credit cards, ID and other valuables. And a cheap one with a few bucks and maybe a supermarket card but nothing personal so they can't find you. If you're robbed, give them the useless one.

Not a good street to be walking down alone (even at 10PM) though its easy for me to say that now after he was beaten to an inch of his life there.
That may be true, but he lived right about there (the news sources reported he was walking from his apt to Pratt).
I moved to Clinton Hill in July 07 and was jumped in the subway station the very first night there- 9p on a Saturday at the G Classon stop. The next night another person was jumped in the same subway station in exactly the same manner as me. After 3 months (!) the police, with my persistent cooperation, were able to locate and arrest the people who did this. Not surprisingly the two culprits, one age 19 and the other 23, had each been arrested more than 6 times in the past.
Is there a lesson to be learned from this? Here’s what I would offer:
Trust your instinct and hate yourself later. Your instincts are usually accurate- in my case they were. if you see someone coming your way and it doesn’t feel right move to the other side of the street, go the other direction, etc. Your much better off feeling like a bad liberal than a victim…

Clinton Hill continues to be a very beautiful area that has a very consistent crime record for over a half century.
Even before I went to school I met a former student of Pratt that left because he was mugged under the then existing Myrtle Avenue el.
That gym they built back in the early seventies was suppose to be an outreach to the community. Sports were never a big thing at Pratt. The foodies and library science people were the only ones into sports. They and a few foreign engineering students who played soccer.
I live 2 blocks from where this happened, and I can tell you Lexington Ave is a street to be avoided.
Since I've lived in Clinton Hill, there have been several shootings and beatings either on Lexington or at Lexington and Classon. And there are all sorts of unsavory characters that hang out on Classon Avenue between Lexington and Greene (there's a bodega there where they congregate and drink on the street). There's also the "Sports Man's Club" an semi-legal club for elderly black folks (yes there was a shooting there a couple of years ago.)
I like the neighborhood, but you definitely need to be aware. No headphones on the street. Keep your wits about you.

Pratt has been there since 1887, so it's "lilly white assed" student body probably predates your mom. The student body is impressively diverse with a huge international exchange program. The school's second largest dorm is decicated to what they call an international learning community where the students living there are involed in all kinds of programs and events to learn about eachother's cultures. In addition, there is a lab school where the local kids can take art lessons and a scholarship program for talented Brooklyn public highschool students to attend Pratt.

It's amazing that the local precinct house is just a few blocks away from the incident and next to the Pratt campus but I guess they are afraid to leave the house because of the crime in their precinct. How many of you remember the big scandal quite a ways back when they found several precinct cars parked in Fort Greene and the cops were cooping on their shift. I believe it's the same precinct.
Back in the old days very few Pratt students went on the other side of Greene. But I guess the new Higgins Hall extended the campus further south.

The precinct is on one side of Classon Avenue. Classon is the dividing line between precincts. They literally cannot answer calls for across the street. I read a really funny story about gun fire erupting in front of the precinct and everybody had to duck for cover and wait for the other precinct to come and put a stop to it.
The 88th precinct which is on the Clinton Hill / Fort Greene side of Classon should be held responsible for the crime that is committed around Pratt and indeed they were the same idiots that were sleeping in their cars back in the late sixties.
