It was 3:30 a.m. on Thursday when Shavit Mekeiten legally parked his Mitsubishi on East 41st Street near Second Avenue. But six hours later, DOT workers dug out the diplomats-only sign that had been behind Mekeiten's car and moved it fifteen feet—to create an extra spot for the New Zealand Consulate. VoilĂ ! Mekeiten was now parked illegally, and an NYPD tow truck soon arrived to take the car away, despite bystanders' protestations. Doorman Nick Perkaj tells the Post he tried to reason with the tow-truck driver: "I know that car! They just moved the sign! The tow-truck driver just said, 'I don't give a f- - -,' and they towed the car." To get his Mitsubishi back from the Manhattan tow pound, Mekeiten had to pay the $185 tow fee and a $95 ticket for not having diplomatic plates. He tells the Post, "They're heartless. They have no conscience. They treated me like I shot someone. This is really, really unfair. I didn't do anything wrong." Earlier this month some NYPD tow truck drivers anonymously informed the Post that they're expected to meet a quota of four tows per day, and if they fall short they're punished with less overtime, assigned undesirable shifts, or have their time-off requests delayed.

The more stories I read like this, the more I want to get out of this city. It amazes me how much the city government does not care about it's citizens and how much they go out of their way to make this city a miserable place to be.
Woodendesigner,
I don't disagree with you about the city, but tow truck drivers are a nightmare EVERYWHERE. It's not just New York.
Aren't NYPD tow truck drivers actual police officers?
No. As traffic enforcement agents, they're civilian employees of the NYPD.
In my honest opinion it should be absolutely legal, and encouraged to shoot NYPD tow truck drivers on sight. They are the scum of the earth, and contribute nothing but hatred and strife to society.
alrighty then...
I thought that you can't ticket anyone for thirty days if a new sign is posted.
Didn't you read what the tow-truck driver said,"I don't give a fuck!"
If only we can use that reasoning with everything in life and get away with it...
i agree wqith the poster - THE CITY DOESENT CARE about ITS CITIZENS - and vanessa no there is no city govt in the world as money hungry or heartless as nyc - I !=
I have to say that the city does have a lot that they can write tickets for and they should. There are a lot of crappy drivers and a lot of people that get away with a lot of BS. This guy however did not deserve this treatment and behavior from city employees like this tow driver should NOT be tolerated.
I know someone this happened to with a fire hydrant. He parked in Brooklyn and came back and his car was gone but there was a fire hydrant there. He had to track down the person who had installed the hydrant and get an official letter from that office to get the fine that he had already paid refunded.
I friggin hate diplomats.
That is all...
City government views the citizens as nothing more than check books. Fuck Bloomberg, Quinn & the rest of our useless "representatives." Vote each and every incumbent out of office.
So Murray got his own parking spot?
tee-hee!
The City makes $2 million/day on parking tickets, a quite significant revenue stream. Also, NYPD traffic cops have monthly quotas to write a certain number of tickets, per a traffic court judge I know, making parking tickets much more likely near the end of the month.
The city would bend over backwards for diplomats but not for its own citizens. That is disgusting, do you know how much time and effort he would have had to put into getting a letter to get his car released without having to pay?
A similar thing happened to me last month. I parked my car outside my building in the same spot I had for months. Ar some point in the day a sign was hung pointing out that parking was no longer allowed between 6 and 6. Luckily I was not towed, but what a huge hassle. I actually had to MAIL (not email or call) DOT to request logs for when they hung the signs. After twenty days they arrived only to be for the wrong dates, despite the fact that they mailed me a copy of the original request with the dates underlined. I should just suck it up and get rid of the car. Funny thing is, I don't worry about it being broken into, stolen, or burgled, its the parking enforcement.
I used email to request documents from DOT and under FOIL the request was filled but it took a while.
I'm curious to know if anyone h as ever done an economic impact study of the benefits of having the UN in New York. Besides the prestige of hosting the international body, does New York get other benefits or are we getting screwed? If there are befits do they outweigh the inconvenience and the lack of property tax revenues?
Anyone have an idea?
A buncha jobs.
I have a friend who works for the federal gov't. A few years ago, he and his partner parked their gov't car in a no parking space (which is allowed by all federal agents (on duty)) with the proper credentials and windshield ID's. The car was towed.
When they went to retrieve the car, the clerk at the impound desk would not give them the car until they paid. They showed their badges, identified who they were and the clerk still would not release the car.
To make a long story short, they left, called for back up, came back and arrested the clerk (who by the way had a concealed, loaded, and illegal fire arm), the manager on duty and apparently found the tow truck driver and arrested him too for the theft of a clearly marked federal vehicle, obstruction of justice, and threatening federal agents (which apparently the clerk and manager did, by saying they were going to have them physically removed from the impound.)
Justice served.
"Justice served."
Story disbelieved.
I smell..hmmmm...I smell.....hmmm...don't quite know what it...oh yeah that's right...its B*LLSHIT.
