  • Yankees 5 Red Sox 2 When things are going right, they really go right. Joe Girardi bypassed Phil Hughes in the eighth, despite holding a 1-0 lead and the Red Sox scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead. No matter, the Yankees jumped back on top thanks to back-to-back homers from Damon and Teixeira, the sixth time they have done that this season, and added two more runs to take a three-run lead into the ninth. Girardi didn’t fool around from there, bringing Mariano Rivera in for the ninth. Rivera didn’t look good, but he got the save and the Yankees swept the Red Sox to take a 6-1/2 game lead in the AL East.
  • Mets 5 San Diego 1: Maybe shaving will turn the Mets season around? At the very least it seems to have turned around their fortunes on Sunday. Then again, maybe it was Johan Santana that did that? Santana went eight innings while allowing only one run and K-Rod shut down the Padres in the ninth to salvage a game for the Mets in San Diego.

The Met fans complain Gothamist favors too much with the Mets. Each to their own I suppose.

wow, the yankee hate is strong on this site....first you predicted that the Red Sux would sweep the Yanks, and now after the Yankees took all 4 and have a commanding lead in first, you say Riviera didn't look good?

must be some bitter ass Mets fans working this site.

  • When the Yankees are on, they are on. I got a chance to see the 15 inning game the other night. I only got a chance to start watching from the 8th inning. Great second half action.

Must have been great watching the game at the stadium.

    "Rivera didn’t look good"

In what way did he not "look good"? Just because he allowed a couple of runners to get on base?

J.D. Drew, having a hot night, got his third hit of the game leading off. Nice piece of hitting on the 1-1 slider. Rivera then got a fly out from Mike Lowell -- statistically one of the Sox' best hitters -- and struck out Varitek. Ortiz came in to pinch hit, and Drew took second unopposed, which opened up first. Ortiz -- one of the game's best hitters over the past 10 years or so -- worked the count full and got a close call for the walk.

So with two runners on, Rivera got leadoff hitter Jacoby Ellsbury, a .300 hitter, on two pitches, inducing a routine slow grounder to the first baseman.

Full inning, 23 pitches, 14 for strikes.

Rivera looked pretty good to me, but then I actually watched the game.
