Dominican Day Parade Takes Over Sixth Avenue

Yesterday was the 27th Annual Dominican Day Parade. The festivities made their way up Sixth Avenue, from 36th Street to 56th Street, with tens of thousands of spectators cheering on the Dominican celebrities, floats, performers, and, yes, politicians (Mayor Bloomberg, City Comptroller Thompson were among those on hand) along the route. NY1 notes, "The event was originally held in Washington Heights, but has since moved downtown as the city's Dominican population grew."

And those wild looking costumed creatures? The Daily News explains they are "diablos cojuelo - or lame devils - in their long-horned masks and colorful, ruffle-sleeved costumes unique to the Dominican Republic" who "cracked bullwhips to thrill the crowds."

wow. this looks a ton better than the damn PR parade. It looks like you could actually watch it without being harassed by dudes throwing water at you.

My wife and I, typical of us, had no idea there was anything going on until we got on a downtown 1 train at 103rd street. A whole car was filled with people in costume and drummers. At each stop we could hear the whistles and drums echoing on the platform. When we got off at 79th street and walked by the car again, we could hear drumming and see people dancing and the train car was actually bouncing up and down with the rhythm.

I was on a train just like that... but then I continued down to the parade and had a good time :)
