Buyers at 111 Central Park North, what the Post dubs Harlem's "most expensive condo," are unhappy about a McDonald's making it way into the ground floor retail space. The Post reports, "Aghast at the potential grease stench, rodents, loitering and trash, not to mention plummeting property values, some say they would rather chip in and rent or buy the ground-floor space themselves than have the golden arches move in." Condo board president Gary Davis put it bluntly, "There's a stigma to... a luxury building having McDonald's as a retail tenant," and noted that many residents have terraces, "There would be a concern that every time you're out there, you would be kind of overwhelmed by a McDonald's smell or any fried food." The ground floor space's owner Tom Shapiro tells the Post if McDonald's moves in, "he...envision[s] a more upscale version of McDonald's similar to one in a Philippe Starck-designed condo on 23rd Street. That outlet has padded banquette seating, fancy light fixtures and a flat screen TV." Of course, that McDonald's was also derided.

I live next door to the Philippe Stark building on 23rd St. That McDonald's is NOT upscale. It also attracts a bad crowd consisting of loud kids and homeless people. Part of the problem is that the McDonald's is open 24 hours. I've been living on the block for over 4 years. The McDonald's was there before the Stark building and was reopened about 2 years ago when the building was completed. During the two years that the building was under construction there was a noticeable lack of homeless people sitting on the street while the McDonald's was gone. I knew this when I moved in so I'm not complaining but I think that the condo owners have every right to want to keep McDonald's out.
"and a flat screen tv" that makes everything different.
just because you pour syrup on shit, doesn't make it pancakes
Multi-Million dollar condos at the corner of Malcolm X & 110th was always a stupid idea to begin with. NOT because it is in Harlem but because that has always been an area for loiterers of all sorts from punk kids grinding their skateboards over every surface available to panhandlers and worse. Anyone who did their actual homework and SILL bought into this building deserves a stinky McDonald's on the ground floor.
So does McDonald's garbage pile up in front of the building every evening? That would be priceless...
Haha! Serves them right. Luxury condos in Harlem, indeed.
Would they prefer Church's Fried Chicken instead?
You would think they'd be a little more concerned about the prison on the eastern side of CPN.
McRLT.
Its a benefit, not a con. Your going to be eating out at McDonalds now to make your sub prime mortgage payments on your new condo. Having a McD in your building saves time so you can work more hours or search more for a new job without having to kill time walk far to McD.
I live in midtown; one of the ground floor spaces in my building used to be a florist. The bylaws prevent anything which serves food, but the space is now a branch of Chase and there have been several times that I have seen people who decided to spend the night sleeping in the ATM vestibule. The super has told me that the bank is responsible for handling this, not the building....I'd much rather have a business that shuts down completely in the evening.
I know people who bought an apartment in that building and I just have to laugh whenever I drive by. It's "110th Street" not Central Park North! And it's surrounded by shit. And you probably have a huge target on your back if people see you walk out of that place at night. It's crazy.
So hard working people invested their money in this building brought their husbands, wives and children there. Young professionals, teachers, doctors and lawyers all live in this building. Retired senior citizens, artists and architects all contribute to the neighborhood. So the smug people that can only criticize and deride those buyers should ask themselves what have they done to help their neighborhood.
"Congratulations on 'helping your neighborhood', enjoy some McDonalds crap."
