Looks like lovely weather for the kick-off to the second annual Summer Streets tomorrow! Starting at 7 a.m., the city will temporarily close Park Avenue and connecting streets from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, displacing motor vehicles and welcoming pedestrians, cyclists, joggers, skateboarders and other non-combustion engine participants. Penny farthing, anyone?
The DOT will provide 150 free bikes and 180 pairs of free skates tomorrow, and kick things off with a "Fun Run"—yes, a Fun Run!—at Foley Square at 7:30 a.m. The streets will reopen to motor vehicles at 1 p.m., but the whole thing will be repeated on the 15th and the 22nd. Map of the route, plus details on free bikes and other events are all here. And here's a look back at last year's inaugural Summer Streets.

This 'Summer Streets' crap is lame. It's set up as a novelty, not as any real thoroughfare of alternative transportations. any cyclist wanting to efficiently travel north-south would still have been better off on 6th or 7th aves.
Am I the only one who thinks it's ironic to make pedestrian and bike traffic stop for cars (especially on a day created so especially for us)?

If that P-Far rider were truly in character he would have gotten off his bike and mercilessly beaten that immigrant within an inch of his life. At least that's what would have happen in the 1800's... Just sayin'...

I hate hipsters, but I love bikes. It's quite a dilemma.

If it's any consolation, hipsters pose with and take pictures of their bikes more than they actually ride them.

all hipsters love bikes and hate hipsters. you should pick up a pair of goofy glasses and deep v-neck shirt before you go.

I'm so sick of all these hipsters and their Penny Farthings, driving around in their American Apparel top hats and Kid Robot pocket watches. I remember when only messengers rode P-Fars...

I can't believe I forgot about this, thanks for the reminder! I didn't miss not one last year.
