Williamsburg Wine Bar Would Worsen Gang Activity, Some Say

080609wine.jpg Gang violence is an ongoing problem on the South Side of Williamsburg, so it's understandable that some local residents are up in arms about plans to open a fancy new wine bar in the neighborhood. Wait, what? On Tuesday a Community Board committee voted against approving a liquor license for Custom American Wine Bar at Driggs and Metropolitan Avenue. It seems Tempranillo and Trinitarios don't mix, as one neighbor explained at the meeting: "We are trying to prevent gang activity in the neighborhood. Opening this restaurant with beer and liquor, with teenagers already going crazy here, it’s going to be an even bigger issue." Another beef is that the owners want to serve wine until 2 a.m.! Do people even stay up that late? It looks like Brooklyn's Community Board 1 is now taking a cue from the stridently anti-night life Community Boards in downtown Manhattan. But it was bound to happen eventually, once enough hipsters transformed into yupsters with sleeping babies. As local Dennis Thompkins told the committee, "The neighborhood is nearly saturated with bars. The area is becoming unlivable. What we need are businesses that serve our community." Because there's no reason anyone should have to schlep to Manhattan just to buy a new bugaboo. [Brooklyn Paper via Eater]

A neighborhood that's oversaturated with bars IS unliveable.

I recently lived in a neighborhood where out of control bar patrons were screaming outside my windows at three AM. The cops would not come when called. When another bar proposed opening, the whole neighborhood got together and protested -- BIG-TIME. The new joint did not open.

I'm sorry, but if the city can't control what's already there, more of the same should not be allowed.

I know I sound like an old lady, but city living requires a balance be struck.

Try presenting both sides, Gothamist.

Isn't that kinda what NYC has been about? The City that never sleeps right?

Should be happy they have new businesses wanting to open.

it's probably pointless noting this, since it goes against the popular perception of Williamsburg. However, I'll try: most of the people who live in Williamsburg are not hipsters nor 'yupsters with sleeping babies'.

Case in point: the building that this bar is slated to open in is a rent-controlled building with senior citizens, families of widely varying backgrounds (polish, hispanic, white, black). A block away -- Fillmore Place -- is mostly families with kids ranging from infant to teenagers, and senior citizens.

Most of them are drunk anyway.

maybe, maybe not. but they're neither hipsters or yupsters with babies.

I'm wondering what kind of wild and crazy patrons go to wine bars. Plus they only want to serve wine until 2am. Doesn't sound so "crazy night life". And, I think the Trinitarios have to be in bed by midnight anyway.

i saw a stroller on bedford today and the poor little baby looked so sad. people should carry their babies in kangaroo pouches. they're much more stylish than strollers, and they promote healthy touching between drunk slutbag parents and their progeny.

It's a cheap shot to use a photo of La Tomatina, an annual tomato food fight in Spain for a Williamsburg drunken gang story.

The City should have local control over the SLA. Also, I think it's dumb to equate not wanting 10 bars on your block to being a killjoy.

There's a huge difference between the local neighborhood bar and a cluster of destination bars that draw huge packs of drunk 22-year old frat boys.

But the gang-activity argument is somewhat ridiculous.

Nothing I love more than drinking a bottle or two of pinot noir and then going out to the streets to bust some heads.
