Sam Sifton To Replace Bruni As Times Restaurant Critic

2009_08_sifton.jpg Confirming rumors that the new New York Times restaurant critic—and Frank Bruni's replacement—will be a longtime Times writer promoted from within, the newspaper has just announced that food and culture writer Sam Sifton will take over the job starting in October. Executive editor Bill Keller sent a memo to staff members announcing the change of guard, writing, "We narrowed the list, and then narrowed it some more. We had some really impressive candidates, writers who know their food and have interesting things to say about the way we eat. Then we threw out the list and drafted Sam Sifton." Restaurants, fire up the Google Image cache now: Sifton, who lives in Red Hook, was most recently Culture Editor at the Times, but is also known for his writing about cooking at home as well as finding unusual food stories in the outer boroughs. He has also served as Deputy Food Editor for the newspaper. For the Magazine section, Sifton was last seen making meatloaf for Nora Ephron.

Is he that insufferable english guy who is sometimes on top chef?

are these positions immune to the salary cuts the printers and other workers that was done?
since I asked, probably means yes, they still get their nice salary, expense accounts and assorted perks.

I assume they are to some extent. A writer in this type of position probably contributes to readership and adds some degree of prestige to the paper.

That meatloaf piece was actually pretty good.

Yeah—and I liked the part about the plastic on the pancetta.

Sam Sifton is great. Good writing , good choices. I have followed him since his days back at The New York Press , 15 years ago or so. A good move by the Times.

I remember when Sifton was writing for the New York Press, about 5 owners ago. How time flies.

I love that the first thing they do is show everyone a picture of him.

He looks like Simon Pegg! I think this will be a good thing.

...and you don't even make sense. This wasn't about Bloomberg. Contain your political opinions to an appropriate story.

Sifton has been the chief editor of the Restaurant section for many years, so this is (financially) a lateral move for him.

Sorry to ruffle your delicate feathers mate-the spirit of felixthecat2 possessed me. Again my apologies-chill bro, chill
