Crosstown Bus Rides Could Get Slower Without Fares

Would making crosstown buses free actually cause the congested midtown rides go any faster? Mayor Bloomberg proposed removing fares from crowded crosstown lines as the most dramatic suggestion of his comprehensive transit plan,"Move NYC," which was released Monday as his most significant campaign proposal yet. The Times calls the plan "all the pleasures of a congestion fee without that troublesome fee" and suggests that people's love of all things free means "New Yorkers are likely to go out of their way for the privilege of being taken for a free ride across town." Bloomberg suggested that eliminating the fares might reduce the amount of buses needed since the easier passage could get them moving quicker in his estimation. The News decided to see just how slow the crosstown buses currently are by sending two reporters across 50th at midday—one by foot and one on the M50. The bus beat the walker across its 1.7 mile route, only taking 21 minutes to the pedestrian's 29. The Straphangers Campaign Gene Russianoff says, "That's great...but the midtown buses stink and are still abysmally slow."

They should have done it during rush hour.

not free since all those lazy cheap tourist will board the buses. Another brilliant idea from doucheberg. Yankees Stadium is a failure and has done nothing for the community. all the money could have been used differently and now doucheberg stealing our stimulus money for his coney island project. where the fuck is the FBi?????

The most successful and dangerous thieves wear suits and perform their craft in tall glass buildings.

I don't see how this is going to speed up the buses since the majority of their delay is that they have to stop every friggin' block. It's the traffic and the overly-frequent stops that are the problem. Any New Yorker knows it's not worth your while to get on a bus unless you physically can't make the walk.

I take the bus sometimes to get a quick nap.

here, I read the post so no one else needs to read that asswipe paper. even the see no evil speak no speak paper has called out Bloomberg slush fund. where is fucking FBi????

http://www.nypost.com/seven/08052009/postopinion/editorials/mikes_pork_problem_183029.htm

Do you really need to post the same stuff day after day? You turn every post that even barely mentions Bloomberg into a rant about completely unrelated issues. We get it: you hate Bloomberg. How about posting something positive about a candidate you do believe in?

it wouldn't be relevant, this is Doucheberg's idea. And the switch and bait doesn't work with it. Bloomberg belongs in jail and all his stupid ideas such as this one is costing us money

Talking about Yankee Stadium and slush funds every day is hardly relevant. And you haven't put together much of a compelling argument as to why this is a horrific idea or offered up some other way of alleviating traffic. It would be relevant if you discussed your preferred mayoral candidates positions on the issues. And by the way, calling him Doucheberg in every post makes you look like pretty juvenile if not a little crazy.

I guess I picked up juvenile name calling from the right neo cons such as Douchberg. And I am not here to support any other mayoral candidates. You can do your own research. Douchberg's ideas are killing this city and has closed down so many small businesses and made so many people homeless. Of course it is no surprise you support boomberg, you probably support all the money he stole and directed to orthodox community, this is worst than NJ and I hope people wake up soon.

Felix: I'm curious how old you are and if you have any context in which to judge what Bloomberg has done. Were you around during the Dinkins years? The Koch years?

bait and switch. Chavez gave people the right to vote on term limits but not Dicktator shitberg. do you read the news, do you see the relationship btw Simcha felder and bloomberg and how money is doled out?? how about how schools are overcrowded and most chelsea resident how to send their young kids to schools 3 zones away????

HELLO penile, most kids graduated without a regents diploma under Blomberg administration and the test scores have been manipulated while MILLIONS AND MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OF our money are diverted to rich folks and their charter schools and test preps. Give me a fucking break. stop reading all his dumb ads and look at the facts.

The bus rider only beat the walker by 8 minutes. I wonder how fast the pedestrian was walking?

It's no surprise New Yorkers go out of their way to take the free bus.

If I understand correctly, the walker and bus left the stop at the same time. But that's unrealistic. Let's say you're at a bus stop -- is the bus always there waiting for you? Of course not. So you either (a) walk or (b) wait. Your wait time contributes to the time it takes you to get where you're going (of course).

So if the wait is (on average) longer than eight minutes...it's faster to walk. I have no idea if it is or is not longer than eight minutes -- I know I often wait 15-20 minutes for a bus going uptown, but crosstown could be quicker.

if you don't need to get there fast, take the bus.
I took the free downtown connexion bus and each time it was packed, all the seats were filled. if it's free, it's gonna get used and overused. though most passengers were tourists.

I take the 86th street cross town pretty regularly, and I would never say its been slow. Usually always dependable, short wait, only problem or thing I've noticed would be that there will be a bus right behind a bus which happens often.

Hello Doucheberg, I am not Quinn who dealt with the smell and licks you butthole. if it is free than it will be overcrowded by all those fat lazy cheap tourists. how about some enforcement of bus stoppers to begin with and also how about no carriage horses in time square????

It would be faster but more crowded. It's always going to stop on every corner but at least you won't have to wait for people to pay the fare. But more people will ride and there are already times when you can't get on because it's too crowded. But if you do manage to get on you'll be good.

I'm confused by the headline of the article: "Crosstown Bus Rides Could Get Slower Without Fares".

What evidence exists that this would be the case?

Agreed. The title is misleading. It is based on the Daily News non-rush hour "race" between two reporters.

"The not-so-epic battle began at 2:47 p.m at 12th Ave. and 50th St. under the blazing afternoon sun."

Rush hour is a different story. Most of a bus's time is spent waiting for ppl to swipe. 100 ppl, 100 swipes, with 5 idiots that put the MetroCard in the wrong way. 20 seconds per swipe and you're at 30 minutes of swiping! Make the buses free and it will be like trains. Ppl just get in and the train leaves the station.

Another great move by Bloomberg.

Why not reinstate tokens? No more swiping, putting the card in backwards, upside down, no insufficient balance issues, no more beeping every time someone pays the fare...

Tokens are not cost efficient, HELLO

HELLO JOKES Should be funny not stupid.

If you had a sense of humor you would get any joke

your suggestion was a joke since it was stupid.

Doucheberg pilot bus program was a failure where people pay in advance the fare at the bus stop. Guess what, no one pays and there is no enforcement. and the buses are so crowded that it will be close to impossible to enforce. So all the money wasted to created these additional bus stops for the Select bus service program down the drain. in the bronx they have 2 different bus stops for the same line but one is select and no one pays and most of the time the fare boxes are broken. FAILURE

So don't try anything bc it might be a failure? That's your logic. Many great things come out of failed enterprises. Let's do NOTHING until we're absolutely certain it will work. There's a reason it's called a pilot program. Idiot.

hey idiot, how about PLANNING FIRST AND LISTENING TO THE COMMUNITY BEFORE INSTILLING A PLAN THAT fails.

Listening to what? What great idea do you have? You don't think Bloomberg planned? Mfer is a $14 billionaire. You think he goes on a whim and implements ideas without research? Idiot.

SO what sheep, he is a billionaire and therefore is your fucking god. get over that hype . bloomberg treats this city as his own monopoly game. I guess I gave Doucheberg the benefit of the doubt to assume he doesn't plan. If he did plan all these failure than he is more of a rube

"If he did plan all these failure than he is more of a rube"

What failures? The bus stop pre-pay? What about better public school scores, less crime, more infrastructure.... did you forget about those? The fuckin prepay fails and ur panties are all in a bunch. Goodness. Idiot.

how about having a support base and resource for instilling this plan. there is no enforcement of fare beaters in the select bus service. FAILUE DUE TO LACK OF PLANNING AND COMMON SENSE. of course douchberg is not affected and doesn't care how his stupid plans hurts us. it is all a game for him.

Yeah, he likes to implement plans that don't work bc it's just fun to do that. Yeah, that explains it. Next he's going to buy all the pants in NYC and burn them just to fuck with everyone. (Credit to Louis CK for that joke.) Idiot.

No you are the idiot, YANKEE STADIUM WAS A FAILURE, he killed term limits. there are more homelessness and now bloomberg wants to manipulate those numbers by shipping them out. More small businesses closed under Bloomberg like Joe Jr that were open during the Koch and Dinkins administration. BIG FUCKING DEAL THAT THERE ARE BIG NEW BUILDINGS built by our money yet profits reap by bloomberg rich developers. Most of us NYers will never see the inside of those luxury condos. So fucking what there are more large buildings in NYC. Those buildings put out so many residents in the streets and closed down businesses.

Do you realize all the thing you mention happened during the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression? Yeah, let's blame Bloomberg for that systemic activity.

There is no correlation btw this recession and term limits. The number of homelessness in NYC and closing down of small business occurred as well before the financial meltdown. it happen due to harlem rezoning, the columbia U expansion, the atlantic yard and willet point project and yankee stadium and now he continues with his demolition of Coney Island. Not to mention he brought elephants to be abused in Coney Island. Fuck Doucheberg, I hope the FBI does their job and hits NYC as they did NJ. There is a reason why Quinn hire a criminal lawyer at 600/hr paid by us.

Great idea. If it doesn't work, go back to the drawing board, no harm done.

I tend to agree, with the exception that some harm is done. But that doesn't mean it shouldn't be tried.

This is the same billionaire who gave out millions of pork and states he keeps no track of it on paper. fucking stupid people still praising this maddoff doucheberg. the city gets poorer and doucheberg gets richer.

Have you read the Obama stimulus? That's all pork. But pork isn't necessarily a bad thing for any Keynesian economists out there. Increase govt spending and you increase GDP.

And the city gets poorer bc WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WORST ECONOMIC CRISIS SINCE THE GREAT DEPRESSION. Bloomberg

bloomberg has a tendency to lie as he lied about the waterfalls success in Brooklyn and yet residents state it will cost millions to undo the damage. HELLO BLOOMBERG gave out money illegally to groups for their support and gave money to city council to extend his term. That is not stimulus but CORRUPTION.

there are only 2 kinds of people who ride the crosstown bus with any regularity. Fat Fucks and Old people. Sometimes you will get a crossbreed of old people who are fat fucks but that's about it. The other people who ride the crosstown bus without any regularity are tourists and Newbie NYer's who take it on a whim. "Oh, this looks convenient". needless to say, it's always first time and last time for those freshmen.

You're right about most of them, but the crosstowns above midtown, i.e. M79, M86 are actually useful. The traffic isn't as bad and if you're crossing the park it does save time.

How about people who want to cross the park, without polluting the air and endangering lives of all living creatures, including humans, by taking a cab?

also I don't wear panties, geez.

Yes you do.

No I don't.

Yes you do.

No I don't.

If you guys really look at this logically. It's not that the midtown buses stink. It's just there are TOO many people. Don't blame the buses. Blame the carbon based life forms who situated themselves into a sliver of the most congested place on the planet. This is why serial killers arise from time to time in society. To cut down our exploding numbers. The most dangerous game is man.

Bush was onto something when he started shit with every country and went into two wars. Looking back, Bush was a genius. Population control.

In the same vein, I hope more ppl get priced out of NYC. Sales tax going up? I'm fine with that. Get these poor ppl like felix outta here.

actually bush failed at that too. we get a lot more maimed than dead. so now it take a village to tend to a dude with no legs back from iraq and the dude probably takes the midtown bus so people will be waiting to load that wheelchair. The best population control has been and always will be good ol mother nature. Asian Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, China mudslides, Swine Flu, tuberculosis, Malaria and Her greatest gift: killer diarrhea.

Holy shit all i see are Felix posts and not one of them makes any sense. They're all just useless links and name calling.

Congrats... 53 comments and 24 are yours, mostly to yourself.

Not only are you my biggest fan, you are your own biggest fan too!

Well, the truth is: Bloomberg is a freakin' idiot. The fact that he is rich makes you people swoon? He's a crook and I agree with Felix. Where is the fucking FBI?

Do you read the newspapers? Granted, they give Bloomberg a pass because they fear him, but have you read the Times lately? How bout "pants on fire" cover story in the Voice? What DID happen to the slush fund investigation?

New Jersey is going to look like child's play when the federal investigation is over.

I think the question of which is faster should be answered by the fine people at Freakonomics.
