Bill Clinton In North Korea, To Negotiate Release Of Journalists

2009_08_bilclint.jpg Former president Bill Clinton is in North Korea right now, in hopes of gaining the release of the two U.S. journalists, Euna Lee and Laura Ling. Two months ago, Lee and Ling were sentenced to 12 years in labors camps for illegally entering North Korea, but earlier tonight, Politico reported, "North Korean officials told the family that they would release the women to Clinton, the source said. The family then approached the former president. The source said the White House approved the mission, which began Tuesday, North Korea time."

The NY Times notes, "The choice of Mr. Clinton would mark his first public mission on behalf of the administration. His wife, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, has been deeply involved in the journalists’ case." And Washington Post reports that Clinton "commands a great deal of respect in North Korea because he nearly visited Pyongyang in the waning days of his presidency and because North Korea's top military commander, Jo Myong-rok, visited Washington in 2000 and met with Clinton, said Victor Cha, a Georgetown professor." Cha said while there might not be a release agreement in place, "It would be very difficult for the North not to give these people up [to a former U.S. president]."

As it happens, Lee and Ling work for Current TV, which was co-founded by Bill Clinton's former VP Al Gore, and recently, Hillary Clinton was taunted by North Korea, after she likened the country to a small child.

Perhaps he's really there to compare Taepodongs.

It makes you wonder. Jimmy Carter is or at least was often on post-presidential quasi-diplomatic errands. Now Clinton. Even George HW Bush has. But can anyone ever imagine Dubya on one, or any foreign country requesting his presence?

Its a possibility. Dubya was our 21st Century Jimmy Carter, If Jimmy Carter can redeem himself, perhaps Bush can as well?

Nahhh

that is the worst comparison i have ever seen. one is a bleeding heart left wing pansy...and the other is a hot headed right winger with an itchy trigger finger. if anybody is carter it's obama

Absolutely. One is a devoted environmentalist who as president encouraged people to save energy and not to waste gasoline. The other still denies climate change is real and believes we can drill our way out of any oil shortage. One served in the Navy with distinction for seven years, retiring only after his father passed away and staying in the Naval Reserves after that. The other pulled strings to get National Guard duty and didn't even show up for much of that.

did you just try to say that carter was a good president? i think you and one other person may believe that. rapid inflation, massive unemployment, the worst recession (at the time) post ww2, major international tensions despite the fact that he said he just wanted to be everybody's friend (which, by the way, we are about to learn that this does not work again from the big o).

I never said that. I just said that their philosophies and histories were diametric opposites. Carter was a lousy president but a good human being. Bush was lousy at both.

I need to rephrase a little. Carter wasn't a completely awful president. He just had the bad luck to be in during a very rough time in history. It wasn't his fault that the economy tanked back then and the energy crisis sure wasn't his fault. And he did manage to broker the historic Egypt-Israel peace deal, after all. At heart, he was definitely a good man, and he's proven that in numerous international missions since his term. Dubya isn't anywhere in the same league as a man or even as a president. His entire eight years was spent making the world a more dangerous place.

if you are the commander in chief it is your fault. those at the top have nobody to blame but themselves and should never point a finger at anybody else. if you're in charge, its your fault. just because he is a good man with good intentions does not mean he makes a good president. hence the comparison to obama.

yeah bush sucks i have nothing to say about what you said.

Someone recently wasted their column in Newsweek by writing about how Obama should appoint Bush as an envoy to Israel.

So to answer your question, yes, someone can imagine him doing this kind of thing.

W is pretty popular in sub-saharan africa. I could see him on a mission there, but not for a while.

I really hope he can secure their release.

maybe he's going there to poll the electorate too

Proving once again... NK is just a bunch of attention whores.

They can buy Bubba off with a fat teenager.

I smell fresh noogie in Bubba's future. Does his wife know he's over there?

obvious post-presidential play for some hot asian journalist ass. bubba, you dog, when will you learn?

firstly, i find it amusing that bill is the one going to pick up the young women, as i know many other people do as well.

secondly, i think this is actually a poor time to use him; yes, it's great if it works and their freedom can be assured. but on the other hand, considering that hillary just really had what i would describe as a diplomatic spat with them, this gives what i hope is the illusion that he is cleaning up the little woman's mess.

don't get me wrong, i don't really think that is what is happening here on the whole, but there is a bit part of me that can't help but go there. and if anyone else has that perception, it completely undermines her role.
