Plax Awaits To See If Grand Jury Is Receptive To His Plea

2009_03_plax20.jpg The Plaxico Burress case is now in the hands of the grand jury, who will decide what charges (if any) are coming against the receiver. The News reports that the end of proceedings saw three Giants staffers share their accounts of the fateful November night—Director of Development Charles Way, VP of Medical Services Ronnie Barnes and Coach Jesse Armstead. And before any decision is reached, the Times tries to sift through all of the media gamesmanship on both sides to get at just what actually would be a fair punishment for Burress. One criminal attorney familiar with the standard plea tactics of the DA's office said one year's jail time usually would have been the norm for these sort of charges (Plax's lawyer Benjamin Brafman's offer of one year was allegedly rejected by his former boss, Robert Morgenthau.) Brafman is still whining to the press about the unfairness of the DA's hard stance against his client, now saying he is "deeply saddened by (their) lack of compassion." The grand jury, acting as "the conscience of the community," could decide as early as today if they found a similar sympathy in Plax's testimony. Update: That was fast: Burress was just indicted!

Big deal. So the grand jury indicted a ham sandwich again. This is NOT news. It just means he gets to go to trial--and win. Because ... what exactly did he do that is so wrong? Oh, he injured himself with his own gun. Big whoopee do.

    Playa' ain't got a praya'.

  • JenChungsBaby

He's not on the Giants any longer so who cares? But it seems like Antonio Pierce is off the hook.

  • "Awaits To See"?

If a young, black kid gets caught with an unlicensed firearm they go straight to Rikers. Do not pass go. Do not collect plea bargain. The same standard should be applied to the superstar athletes that many of these young kids look up to.

  • Kojak

So your saying that the same standard of bias against blacks should be applied to all superstar athletes when it comes to crimes involving unlicensed firearms?

  • Bernie Madoff-Goetz

And you have examples of whites getting busted with unlicensed hand guns and getting a slap on the wrist...

"deeply saddened by (their) lack of compassion." Is this idiot a lawyer or a comedian? Losers like Buress do not deserve any "compassion". He may be a hero to Giants fans but he was a thug out drinking in a nightclub with an ilegal gun. 3 years sounds about right.

  • JacqueMehoff

    holy crap, that's unexpected.

    what charges?

  • FunChop

maybe there's justice in the world after all

He should get treated like everyone else and get jail time. He should not get special treatment because he played for the Giants. They need to make an example out of him so other thugs will learn not to have guns. With that being said the only exception I see for him is if he signs with the jets. He would bring more people to the seats and that means more jobs and money for the bad economy. This is important in times like these and might take precedent. Not to mention that the j-e-t-s would be awesome!!

  • imadick

yeah, if he was treated the same, he would have gotten the 1-year plea deal. but it's high profile, so he'll have to do more.
